A recent study from media Analysts MoffetNathanson shows that the reasoning behind many cutting the cord could be changing.
In the past, most streamers and cord-cutters decided to take this route simply based on one factor: Price.
However, the latest report from MoffetNathanson notes that there may be another reason for users canceling their pay-TV subscriptions.
We want to know what you think of this latest streaming trend? Why did you choose to cut the cord?

The company’s Quarterly US SVOD Tracker Report shows that content offerings are becoming a driving factor for those cutting the cord.

Hide Your Digital Fingerprint
With competition rising and new service options continually increasing, many are finding that the content they are looking for is no longer available through a cable service.
Instead, Streaming Apps and services now offer the shows and films that viewers crave.
The report from MoffetNathanson noted the following:
Linear network owners are individually moving more and more original content to streaming, which collectively weakens the viability of the bundle for all. It is akin to the mistake made when linear network owners individually agreed to sell content to Netflix, which ultimately weakened the linear system that paid their bills
In 2019, 50% of Amazon Prime subscribers claimed that they switched to the service due to price.
However, that number has decreased to just 34% in Q1 of 2022 noting a drastic decline in those switching solely based on cost.
Hulu is also noticing an upward trend in viewership with many opting to subscribe to the service because of their content selection.
Registrations for Hulu due to content rose from 15% in Q3 of 2019 to 23% in the first quarter of 2022.

Netflix saw similar results in this survey, however, it also noticed a drastic decline in overall subscribers.
The company saw a loss of 200,000 subscribers in Q1 of 2022 and expects to lose another two million in Q2 of this year.

It noted competition and password sharing as a few of the reasons for the subscriber loss, however, price increases are also likely a factor.
Netflix Increasing Prices Again for 2022
A letter to company shareholder’s noted this stating:
Streaming is winning over linear, as we predicted, and Netflix titles are very popular globally. However, our relatively high household penetration – when including the large number of households sharing accounts – combined with competition, is creating revenue growth headwinds.
It will be interesting to see how this landscape evolves in the future with more and more people diving into the cord-cutting community.

We originally cut due to cost. The commercials seemed never ending. Content was turning too far left. Now content on streaming services is also too far left. Luckily, we can watch older shows and pick movies more suited to our tastes.
I believe cable tv providers are engaged in monopoly and they are all scammers. I never understood how they give the best promotions and offers to new customers, and run over their loyal customer base after the promo is over. Soon after you switch to another provider, the previous cable provider will immediately offer you the current promo offer. Plus they force garbage fees on you for things you don’t want (like sports channels and their fees, which I never want). Considering that cable tv providers are price gouging their customers and engaging in dishonest business practices, I decided I’m not paying a dime to any of those clowns anymore. I cut the cord and have never looked back
My truth is, that all streamers (IE, Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and all Satellites, Cable companies stream the same content. Prices may vary, but the only reason to have any one of these is to watch their original content, and therein lies the rub. They all have the same movies and shows, but due to all that originally, that’s why you are sucked into paying for their subscriptions hook, line, and wallet. I hate commercials because they think we need to be told in the dumbest ways we need their crap. I have been trying to cut the umbilical since the mid-’70s and now the technology is up to snuff to not only cut but to shred. Me and my Android thank you Troy for all the slicing and dicing through the quagmire of what we call entertainment.
Initially I cancelled cable tv due to the maddening ever-increasing price without improved content. Now I am reinforced because of commercials being inserted into programs every 5 minutes. I can set up all my favorite weeklies in ONE SPOT and watch when and what I want and not be constantly interrupted.
Dennis from Houston, TX,that is why me and my wife cut the cord for over four years now how prices, same old thing and paying for channels we don’t need or watch at all we purchased the super box and we love it we have everything we need in one place and we don’t have a monthly bill to pay any more which saves us at least thousands of dollars we speed on our cable bill ? at minimum of $ 300 a month and we love the content it has , sports ,movies, a dvr with seven day play back all the content and shows I grew up with my kids love it we are very happy and proud to have cut the cord besides that give me more money back in my wallet
It’s still price, but I see where the content could become an issue.
120 dollars a month for reruns and 80% infomercials made me cut the cord 3 years ago. I dont subscribe to anything only my VPN. When or if they make jailbreaking and pirating imposible to do, I will go back to reading books. I will never support Hollywierd or any of those commies ever again.
I am in a different context altogether. In the Caribbean whatever is American is our only option whether Cable or IPTV. I cut the cord mainly for content but realize that I am not any better for it. Fro example, just internet is $200 XCD which is like just under $100 US. Then to get an IPTV which provides 1 device per account is from average 15 US or $50 XCD. To really get a great IPTV is almost twice your internet bill plus if you want to use VPN in our context is really extending the Cord. For US and Canada the content is saturating and the price reasonable for outside the US although you cut for content and cost; to get an IPTV service with Caribbean content is frustrating. So you can’t get it with Cable you try to cut and it’s still untenable. My conclusion; I cut for cost and content and device availability but the content becomes sparse when outside the US-UJ-Canada-market. Troy, maybe you can do a research on IPTV and cutting the cord outside the US and consider the Caribbean so close to the US but outside its privileged content and cost offerings. Hope my response makes sense. Thank you for all you do.
Price is always going to drive decisions, but I find price is also tied to value or perceived value. Cable companies brag about all the channels they can provide, but I am willing to bet most of us have no more than ten channels we watch on a consistant basis, and can you subscribe to only these channels, of course not. Whether cable companies want to admit it or not, their business days are numbered. In Canada, these companies have seen their survival now depends on overcharging for internet service to fill their cable revenue losses. They create streaming services that are basically cable tv groupings of channels packaged into services like Crave, Stack, HGTV, etc. They package cable service into a la carte menus. I cut the chord many years ago and have missed nothing. Internet cost aside, my monthly tv service costs, with vpn, are less that $20. This gives me live tv, movies etc.
I found the Firestick and troypoint and now I can watch what I want when I want….saving so much much money !!!!!
Love it!
Cut the cord just over 2 years ago due to rising costs & commercials. The internet has plenty available content to choose from. An initial layout for an Nvidia Pro Shield, a vpn & just the price of an internet connection & you’ve the world at your fingertips to watch. And if you follow Troypoint, everything is a no brainer.
Appreciate you following along, Gryph!
Price was a factor but not the determining factor. I am a huge international club soccer enthusiast and so the decision was made simple for me. Many years ago I had a 10 foot parabolic and could catch matches pretty much anywhere anytime but it got old chasing after the parabolic information and there were still subscription prices that really didn’t make keeping it a lot of sense so I turned to Dish Network and DIRECTV for a while then cable but the problem is if you want to watch any of the soccer outside of maybe England Italy or Spain, good luck finding it anywhere on any of those devices. So what can I tell you? I just finished watching the quarterfinals of the African champions league and never would have otherwise. So thank goodness for the opportunity to enjoy something that no one else is able to provide commercially.
I was paying too much for tv getting channels I didn’t want, every time I wanted to watch some thing I would get a message saying I must subscribe to this channel, I just got tired of it and will never go back.
I originally became a cord cutter due to the fact that I was living in a foreign country and could not view many U.S. television networks/channels at a reasonable cost. I continue to prefer streaming programming because I can play most titles on demand, and streaming selections are far more diverse than network or cable offerings.
There are so many IPTV services available with way more content and a fraction of the price of cable. I still have to purchase internet from the cable company and they keep raising the price for it.I play the 2 companies in my area and switch every couple of years as they give you a a low price for 2 years.
More people are also going back to ota, and getting a streaming service that doesn’t charge the bigger $$$ for locals.
I had cable and then DirectTV. My bill was about $120/month. I went to an OTA, Firestick and Fire tv recast. I get 50 stations on the antenna that I can watch or record. I already had Amazon Prime. The outlay for everything including installation was $350. It paid for itself in 3 months.
Netflix has lost share due to their increasingly mediocre and tiresome woke content – may they experience a excruciating and horrible death.
Price and content was the factor for me, I had Cox, and basic only goes up to ch22. That was almost $70 at the time(2015) I wanted the entertainment channels but that cost $150 after the promo ended so I ended the tv service and just use an Antenna for local and basic channels, and an iptv service and real debrid for everything else. I’m glad I did bc my internet is up to $65. I also used to subscribe to Netflix, I do have prime but that’s mainly for the free shipping, but after a while there was really no new content, or the new content sucks, with the iptv service I don’t have to bounce around from Netflix,to prime, to Hulu etc it’s all in one place, one price.
For me it was the price of cable and then the woke crowd came in. i can find what i want to watch streaming.
I also see the trend as people cancel cable services the cost of just internet services going up and to stream we must have an internet connection.
Price of course, and being able to customize my content. We get Netflix, mlb.tv, 1 year Paramount+, & 1 year Apple TV+ free through T-Mobile. We pay for FloSports, MavTV +, Hulu, Peacock, & Sling. Add the free apps we get from our public library and the AppStore. Far cheaper than what we’d pay Cox for a semi-equivalent cable/internet package full of crap.
Price and content showing old stuff more than the new. Not getting any good deals with these companies everything now is over $200 which is a shame. Just like you said they are losing a lot of channels and want us to pay top price.
I wanted to ask you about Cobra IPTV service does it have local channels to?
I’ve gotten the T-Mobile internet and an app that has every cable channel including sports, canada, UK , VOD , And Theater Movies !!!! So satisfied ! T-Moble unlimited is $50.00 a month , thats it .
Sorry to say I never bought cable cause it’s too expensive and the channels repeat their selves. Now I have the problem with Prime Video and paying too much for Netflix and Hulu. So cord-cutting is the thing for my family and me.
Because television shows and movies have gone woke
I’m with you Jackie! We are cutting the Direct TV cord at the end of the month because they dropped OAN. I watched that a lot and they decided it was too conservative. We’re also dropping Disney+ due to their stance in Florida. I never complained much as prices rose but when they try to charge me a lot, then try to force feed me their agenda, I gotta draw the line!
In Canada it is really not about Cable Company Providers but the Extreme Cost of Internet Service which for Canadians is one of the most Expensive in the World.
Cable price hikes Then roku, firestick, OTA , Philo , Paramount+ for 1883 It has become a fun stay at home hobby during Covid
People are going to streaming for one reason all the TV stations are advertising stream this and stream that now so I guess that’s what the people are doing have a blessed day
I stopped taking cable when the new ATSC 1.0 came in. My cable tv bill was getting up to $70 a month and I didn’t watch that much. That was before streaming, but we had Netflix by mail which I did take. I have tried each of the pay streaming services which started out cheaper than cable, but with much less channels. I still was paying for channels I didn’t watch, and couldn’t get the channels I did watch. Unless I took all the services out there. So I gave that up. I can’t say I love commercials, but these services are the ones I take now. Tubi, Crackle, Pluto, Roku Channel, Xumo. I have Amazon Prime but don’t really watch that many movies, I take it for the free two day shipping.
In summary, it’s still the price.
I use several streaming services. Mostly for content. Although price is a factor
It is price why I don’t use Netflix. I spend about $50 a month on streaming services. Cheaper than cable and so much more content…
About 7 years ago sky stopped covering southern Spain. So I had no option but to start streaming to get UK live TV. I have never regretted it
We finally decided to cut the cord. The holdout was my husband. We were paying for a house phone we absolutely never used!! We were paying high prices for TV and all we ever got was repeats and a whole lot of commercials that I couldn’t stand!! I started by getting Discovery+ for under $8.00 monthly and I was paying a couple dollars extra for commercial free whenever I wanted to watch. Soon enough my youngest daughter alongside my First daughter finally convinced him to cut the CORD!!!!
WE’RE ALL VERY SATISFIED. WE HAVE FIRESTICK 4K ON 2 TVs.
I bought Roku 2 years ago and I really don’t care for it. But I have it. We also have Samsung TV which allows us to go directly into RedBox acct. We can stream all free or new. Of course I have IPVANISH which I love ?? ?!! I have had it for several years & just signed on for 2 more.
I don’t like anyone knowing my personal interests or business. It’s also perfect for other reasons. I am a bit upset that I’ve been a customer all this time and now they offer anti virus protection and Malware…..BUT NOT TO ANYONE ALREADY SIGNED UP!!!!!!!! I THINK IT’S A HORRIBLE WAY TO SHOW CUSTOMER APPRECIATION ?
CUT THE CORD!!!!! SAVE MONEY!!!
@Cindy
I love your reply. You tell everyone to cut the chord, you shout by typing in upper case like a troll. I question your credibility.
You ignore one major factor:—internet fees. Firestick is also a joke in my opinion. Either you use it out of the “box” or you tinker (jailbreak) it to get the features.
Furthermore, you claim you stream (for free) through your Redbox account. Your Redbox account is free? Right, lol.
Price and specific programs. They go where they can get it and continually change the source. Too many sources.
And you wonder why anxiety and depression are so rampant? How can all this with the ever-changing sources be good for one’s mind? Oh, right. Linux users and those with a similar mindset have no idea what simplicity is. That’s our society now, and claiming health protection measures are restrictions. Can you see where all this is going?
I see it as a great separation from the rich cable companies and the affected ($$$) consumer. Of course people will look for better avenues to satisfy their need for entertainment. There are some good streaming packages out there and much more affordable, if people are willing to take a chance and get away from the normal market providers. COST is always the driver.
I was so tired of being bilked for such little return ! Cable is just another scheme to steal and overcharge justified by claiming it’s “entertainment”! It’s been in my rearview for about five years now and I couldn’t be happier ! Cheers to all us cord cutters !
I think the price is a big factor especially with the rise in the cost of living, but consider this- restrictions on covid are now virtually non existent, people who couldn’t go out can now go anywhere, so not as much need for television.
Price!!
Hmmm………….. April 2022 and the issue is still Price, Price and Price!!!
