Larissa Knapp, the former FBI senior official who is now the Executive VP and Chief Content Protection Officer for the MPA (Motion Picture Association) has issued a statement regarding the state of streaming piracy.

In July of 2024, Forbes Argentina published the statement that has since been released by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment (ACE), who works hand in hand with the MPA to combat piracy.
Titled “Fighting Piracy, Strengthening Economies Across Latin America”, the article details what she feels the threats of piracy are and the strategies that are being implemented to mitigate this problem.
Most of it is centered around the idea that those who partake in “illegal” streaming are hurting the industry by taking money out of the pockets of content creators as well as anyone who contributes to the development and release of various media.
When online pirate operators are allowed to set up shop, grow, and function with impunity, this vast segment of the economy takes a hit. To give just a few more facts and figures, piracy costs $733 million per year for the audiovisual industry in Latin America; those losses total at least $176 million just in Argentina, according to a study commissioned by the Center for Telecommunications Studies in Latin America (CET).  too: there are about 26 million unique monthly users of illegal piracy websites in this country.
She goes on to detail some of the crimes being committed by these “criminal actors” and notes that this issue could not be more urgent. Stating that even those who consume this illicit content could be at risk.
This threat is seeping into markets, communities, smartphones and laptops everywhere. The pirate operators behind these illegal sites and services are criminal actors, and they’ve gone viral and virtual. They’ve become parts of vast, international criminal enterprises. They engage in digital theft, taking others’ creative work designed for movie theater, TV, or computer screens, and illegally distribute it across the globe.
Because whenever someone logs onto one of these seemingly innocuous websites and accesses stolen content, it does more than put consumers’ privacy, personal data, or payment information at risk. The pirate operators behind these illegal services undermine the businesses, workforce, and entire ecosystem behind some of the world’s favorite movies, TV shows, and sporting events.
ACE and the MPA have been at the forefront of the battle against piracy as we have seen numerous instances of them working separately or together to seek and shut down various online entities.

One of the newest initiatives that authorities from across the globe are working on is Operation 404 which aims to bring government entities all over the world together to combat piracy.
Since its inauguration (which was over 5 years ago) Operation 404 has held a role in blocking “over 2,500 piracy sites and nearly 750 streaming apps, most of them based in Latin America. From the start, this campaign was backed by the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment, or ACE, the world’s leading anti-piracy coalition”.
It appears as though numerous countries are working together with their government agencies to do everything they can to end these illegal pirate streaming entities.

When digital pirates succeed, businesses, workers, and consumers suffer. But when we combat them, the entertainment industry is stronger, audiences are safer, and the entire economy is better off. That’s a win for all of us.
