Japanese police have arrested a 56 year old man for seeding NHK dramas onto Nyaa, and the method used to catch him should worry every torrent user.

Police Arrest Nyaa Torrents Uploader

Kyoto Prefectural Police arrested Masakazu Ono of Sagamihara on July 28th, per the announcement from CODA.

The charge covers one June 7th upload, a recording of the NHK and WOWOW drama Midnight Taxi. He admitted it and said he wanted the world to see NHK’s work.

Ono told police he shared over 1,000 files across five years, including taiga dramas Berabou and Toyotomi Kyodai. Investigators found no proof of profit.

Nyaa is one of the most popular torrent websites of all time with millions of monthly visitors.

How Japanese Police Tracked the Nyaa Uploader

Rights holders normally join the swarm and log IP addresses, which is similar to how authorities fine IPTV subscribers.

CODA says this case worked differently. Their tool, built by the Japan Hacker Association, never watched the swarm. It studied how data moves through index and tracker sites.

That distinction matters. A VPN hides you inside a swarm, but does nothing about the trail left on the index.

Downloaders Are Getting Charged Too

Seeders are not the only target. Since opening the case in April 2024, Kyoto police have also referred three men in their 40s and 60s for downloading.

That mistake is one most people never consider. Torrent clients like qBittorrent share pieces of a file back out while you pull it down, so downloaders become uploaders.

I’ve watched that trap catch users for years, from the Comcast subscriber unmasked by a subpoena to the Danish man handed a fine. Nobody sets out to distribute anything. The software decides.

Final Thoughts from Troy

Ono uploaded for five years and got caught on a single June 7th recording, which tells you the scale of what CODA is now able to see. Their tool did not need the swarm, so the privacy habit most torrent users rely on never entered the picture.

A quality VPN still matters against swarm logging, and it is why the tracking method in this case is the real story. Anyone who wants NHK dramas without any of this should start with legitimate streaming options, because a rights holder that can read the index does not need to watch you download.
