ilsole24ore.com, an Italian news agency, acquired a copy of a letter sent to an IPTV User from the Guardia di Finanza.
It includes details of an operation that began in May of 2022 to pursue subscribers for their role in copyright infringement.
The letter states that Police Forces tracked users “arranging for the redirection of all Internet service providers’ national connections”.
Authorities diverted traffic to police-controlled servers which allowed them to track and identify site visitors via their IP Addresses.
Gian Luca Berruti, the head of investigations at the Guardia di Finanza exclaimed to ilsole24ore that authorities were able to track IPTV users by:
tracing of all connections to pirate sites (IPs) combined, in real-time,” and “cross-referencing telematic information with that derived from the payment mechanisms used.
It is estimated that over 1500 people received letters notifying them of their illegal actions.
Those who received a letter from Italian Police were informed that they are required to pay a fine for copyright infringement actions.
A one-time payment of 154 euros is requested, or 1032 euros “in the case of recidivism”.
If users pay their fine within 60 days of receiving the letter, they must pay 51 euros, or 344 euros “in the case of recidivism”.
You can see a modified version of the letter below.
This isn’t the first time we have seen drastic actions taken by the Italian Police.
Authorities have threatened fines and court hearings for subscribers before and played a major role in IPTV shutdowns.
It will be interesting to see if authorities in Italy and other countries continue their crackdown of subscribers.
