India’s High Court in New Delhi has issued a groundbreaking new blocking order specifically targeting popular apps like IPTV Smarters Pro and related platforms.

This latest development shows India’s courts are becoming more aggressive in their anti-piracy efforts. The new injunction goes beyond traditional website blocking to include live TV applications and streaming services.
Evolution of India’s Blocking Orders
India started with simple blocking orders over a decade ago. Copyright holders had to request specific domain blocks with detailed evidence for each site. This approach proved limited since pirate sites would simply switch domains after getting blocked.
Courts then introduced dynamic injunctions to address this problem. These orders allowed ISPs to block original domains plus any mirror sites or clones that appeared later. The system proved more effective but still had limitations.
Dynamic+ Injunctions Expand Reach
Dynamic+ injunctions took things further by covering future content and domains that don’t exist yet. These orders also compel domain registrars like Namecheap to suspend domains globally, not just block them locally.
Previous dynamic+ orders forced registrars to suspend popular pirate sites like Zorox.to, Upmovies, and Flixwave.to worldwide. Other companies including Porkbun also complied with these blocking requirements.
The New “Superlative” Injunction
The superlative injunction breaks new ground by specifically including mobile applications as blocking targets. Previously, orders focused mainly on websites.
Now the court considers any copyright-infringing service eligible for real-time blocking, regardless of how it operates.
Hide Your Digital Fingerprint
Star India originally sought protection for Hotstar and Disney+ content from sites like starshare.live and smart4k.cc.

The company also wanted personal information disclosed about apps connected to iptvsmarters.com and iptvsmarterpro.app.

Temporary Blocking Authority
The most controversial aspect allows Star India to add new blocking targets without court oversight until July 3rd. This emergency power exists because the High Court takes a summer break while sports broadcasts continue.
Star India expressed concern about piracy during the England Tour of India cricket games. The temporary authority lets them request blocks from ISPs and domain registrars without waiting for judicial review.
Concerns About Oversight
Legal experts worry about reduced judicial oversight during the court’s vacation period. Previous blocking errors in India affected legitimate sites like Vimeo, GitHub, and the Internet Archive.
Arnav Kaman from the copyright blog SpicyIP warns that Star India becomes “the protector of its own content” with free rein to block anything. Without proper records, innocent websites caught in the crossfire have no recourse.
While expanding blocking powers to cover mobile apps makes sense, giving copyright holders unrestricted targeting authority raises questions. The system lacks proper oversight and fail-safes to prevent abuse.
India is the latest country to enforce stricter site blocking, as we’ve seen similar notions in France, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the United States.
Final Thoughts
India’s superlative injunction represents the latest evolution in anti-piracy enforcement.
While protecting copyright holders’ rights makes sense, this new injunction sets a concerning precedent.
