The UK government has a new idea for fixing “misinformation” online, and once again it means more control over what you see and less choice for you.

According to multiple reports, ministers are preparing rules that would force YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to push “public service news” higher in your feed.
The targets for special treatment are state-backed and legacy broadcasters like the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4, and possibly national and regional newspapers too.
The pitch is that trusted British news is getting buried by foreign algorithms, and that younger users glued to social media ‘need protecting from bad information.’
What the Rules Would Actually Do
Think of it like the old TV programme guide, where certain channels always sat at the top. The government wants the same forced ranking applied to your social feeds, with hand-picked outlets parked at the front no matter what you actually clicked on before.
Officials say the rules could start out voluntary, then get backed by legislation if platforms don’t play along.
A senior YouTube policy executive has already pushed back hard. On a blog post from April, he warned that these “prominence” rules would force the platform to give special treatment to a small group of organizations chosen by the government, while every independent creator gets shoved down the line.
In plain terms, if the state starts picking the winners, the creators you chose to follow become the losers.

Final Thoughts from Troy
Notice the tell buried in the fine print: these rules start out “voluntary,” then turn into law if the platforms don’t fall in line. That’s the same playbook we’ve watched the UK run lately, from weighing VPN bans to banning social media for under-16s.
A government deciding which news sits at the top of your feed isn’t protecting you from misinformation. It’s a form of censorship deciding what counts as information in the first place.
Nothing is locked in yet, and the plan could shift before any consultation opens. But when the state starts picking which voices you see first, the smart move is to keep your own access open and watch this one closely.
