Italian police have raided an IPTV network with ten under investigation, who are mostly resellers.

Italy’s Guardia di Finanza launched another major pirate IPTV crackdown across four regions. The investigation started when officers inspected a pizzeria in Cagliari that was illegally streaming pay-per-view events using unauthorized set-top boxes.
This simple discovery led authorities to uncover a complex international network involving content providers, distribution systems, and servers. U.S. and Dutch authorities provided assistance during the multi-location operation.

IPTV Raids Target Resellers Across Multiple Regions
Operations took place in Sicily, Puglia, Sardinia, and Lombardy. Ten people are now under investigation, with nine reportedly being resellers rather than main operators.
Video footage from the raids shows officers collecting IPTV boxes and other evidence from private homes. While these lower-level arrests typically result in quick replacements, this case may be different.

New Strategy Targets End Users
Unlike previous operations, authorities are now focusing heavily on identifying IPTV subscribers and fining them. The Guardia di Finanza describes this as a “strategic” approach aimed at both dismantling criminal organizations and sanctioning customers.
More than 2,500 subscribers have already been fined approximately €150 each this year. However, the financial consequences may extend far beyond these initial penalties.
Rights Holders Demand Major Compensation
DAZN, SKY, and Serie A have obtained subscriber identities from prosecutors and announced plans to pursue civil action. They’re demanding “thousands of euros” from each fined customer as compensation for alleged losses.
Hide Your Digital Fingerprint
Whether these threats will materialize into actual lawsuits remains unclear. The move could backfire as a public relations disaster or serve as an effective deterrent.
Final Thoughts
While pirate IPTV certainly violates copyright laws and deserves enforcement action, one has to question whether Italian police resources are being allocated wisely.
Multi-region raids targeting people watching television seems excessive when Italy faces serious organized crime, drug trafficking, and violent offenses that threaten public safety.
Perhaps these resources would better serve Italian citizens by focusing on crimes that actually harm people rather than corporate profit margins.
