BreachForums Hacker Sentenced to 3 Years in Prison

A major hacker was sentenced to 3 years in prison for running one of the biggest hacker marketplaces called ‘BreachForums.’

BreachForums Hacker Sentenced to Prison

Federal appeals court overturned the original slap-on-the-wrist sentence for Conor Fitzpatrick, the 22-year-old mastermind behind BreachForums.

His new three-year prison term represents a dramatic shift from the 17 days of “time served” he received in January 2024.

Fitzpatrick operated under the alias “Pompompurin” and ran one of the world’s largest hacker marketplaces. The site hosted over 330,000 members and facilitated the sale of stolen personal information from billions of victims.

BreachForums emerged in March 2022 as a replacement for the shuttered RaidForums marketplace. The platform allowed cybercriminals to buy and sell hacked databases containing sensitive information including:

  • Bank account details
  • Social Security numbers
  • Personal identifying information
  • Login credentials for online accounts
  • Child sexual abuse material

Court documents reveal the site offered access to at least 888 datasets containing over 14 billion individual records. Victims included major companies like AT&T, T-Mobile, WhatsApp, TikTok, Trump Hotels, and government agencies.

Legal Consequences Mount

Prosecutors originally sought 15 years in prison but settled for supervised release in the initial sentencing. They successfully appealed this decision, calling it “substantively unreasonable.”

The appeals court agreed, leading to this week’s resentencing. Fitzpatrick must now pay $1,016,786.51 in additional restitution on top of previous payments to victims.

His legal troubles were complicated by violations during his supervised release, including unauthorized VPN use and possession of over 600 images depicting child abuse.

Final Thoughts

The resentencing sends a clear message about federal prosecution of cybercrime. While three years falls short of prosecutors’ original request, it represents substantial jail time for someone who initially walked free.

The case highlights ongoing challenges in shuttering dark web marketplaces, as BreachForums continues operating under new administrators despite repeated law enforcement actions.
