Police Arrest Magis TV Dealers & Raid the Piracy Operation

LaLiga, Alianza, and Argentine law enforcement have arrested distributors of the ‘Magis TV’ service after raiding the piracy operation.

The operation resulted in multiple arrests and exposed how some internet service providers actively participate in IPTV networks.

Major ISP Owner Now Fugitive After Raids

The investigation centered on UV Mundo Digital, a legitimate internet service provider operating in Chubut province.

Authorities discovered the company was selling Magis TV Pro subscriptions alongside regular internet services, promoting packages through their website, social media channels, and retail locations.

Ulises Jorge Velázquez, the ISP owner, now faces arrest warrants and has become a fugitive. Prosecutors allege he operated one of Argentina’s largest Magis TV distribution networks, processing over 160 million Argentine pesos (approximately $125,000) through various payment platforms.

Police raids took place simultaneously in Chubut, Mendoza, and Río Negro provinces. Three suspects were arrested during the operations, while Velázquez remains at large.

Argentina shows a 42.6% household piracy rate among its 11.3 million broadband-enabled homes. While this falls below Mexico’s 46% rate and Ecuador’s staggering 58.6%, it still represents millions of potential lost subscribers for legitimate services.

Magis TV has emerged as the region’s dominant illegal IPTV platform, offering packages with 900 channels for $20 monthly, plus on-demand movies and series.

The service provides multiple subscription tiers, from $5 for single-screen access to $12.80 for three-screen packages.

Technology Companies Join Fight Against Piracy

The investigation benefited from cooperation with major technology platforms. Mercado Libre and Mercado Pago provided crucial assistance, helping authorities trace financial transactions linked to illegal subscription sales.

This collaboration marks a shift for Mercado Libre, which previously appeared on the U.S. Trade Representative’s Notorious Markets list.

Judge Esteban Rossignoli, who authorized the arrest warrants, previously ordered ISPs to implement live blocking measures during Champions League and Argentine League finals.

Authorities are now pursuing additional measures, including requesting Google to disable Magis TV from all Android devices.

Final Thoughts

While this operation represents a significant victory for LaLiga and anti-piracy authorities, the reality of fighting digital piracy remains challenging.

History shows that when one major pirate service gets shut down, dozens of new operations quickly emerge to fill the void.

A quick Google search for “Magis TV” shows that several clones have already appeared with likely more to come.

While these enforcement actions send important messages to potential pirates, authorities will find themselves playing an endless game of whack-a-mole against new illegal services until content becomes more accessible to average consumers in the region.
