How To Setup VPN On Android TV Box

Setup VPN On Android TV BoxThis step-by-step tutorial will show you how to install a VPN service onto your Android TV Box and configure the settings as well.  This process is assuming that you have Google Play Store installed on your Android TV Box and you have a Google username and password that you can use to login with.

Why would you want to setup a VPN on your Android TV Box?  There are many reasons but here are the most important.

Your Internet Activity Is Being Watched

Most people don’t realize that their current Internet service provider keep logs of all streaming and download traffic on their respective accounts.  They can see everything that you have accessed on the Internet which includes media that you have streamed through your Android TV Box or any application (Kodi).  Also, if you ever travel and connect to public wifi hotspots, your online activity can easily be intercepted as well.  If you ever connect to any of these insecure access points, it is crucial to use a VPN service.

Your Internet Service Provider May Be Throttling Your Connection

Many Internet service providers are also in the cable television market and they don’t like you using these alternative streaming methods (Kodi, Mobdro, UKTVNOW, etc).  So, they either block access to them or they throttle your connection which results in terrible buffering or slow download speeds.  Android TV Boxes are becoming more popular by the day and the service providers will start taking more aggressive approaches to keep their share of the market.

Geo Restricted Content

Some of you live in areas where you cannot access a certain Internet service with your Android TV Box because you don’t live in an area that is allowed.  This is also a big one for those who live in countries where their government restricts access to services originating from outside their country.

IPVanish VPN Service Solves These Problems

When you use a VPN service provided by IPVanish on your Android TV Box, your connection is encrypted and traffic is routed through another server making it impossible for your provider to see what you are downloading.  Plus IPVanish doesn’t retain any traffic logs so your privacy is 100% secure.  When you connect to the IPVanish service, it assigns you a new IP Address which keeps your Internet traffic anonymous and secure.

By using IPVanish, you will eliminate the probability of your Internet service provider throttling or blocking access to some of the best streaming applications such as Kodi, Mobdro, UKTVNOW, Showbox, and many more.

Once you register for an IPVanish account, you can use the service on five different devices so you can protect yourself on your computer, smartphone, Fire TV/Stick, and Android TV Box.  Again, this is perfect for those of you who use public wifi access points so you can now secure both your Android TV Box and any other device that you connect to the Internet.

Hi I have subscribed and successfully put IP Vanish on my Android phone and want to put it on other devices (PC and MBOXES) but when I try I keep on getting a request to open a new subscription – Is there a way to use the same IP Vanish on more than one device without putting it on a router?

    • Troy October 4, 2017 at 9:36 am - Reply

Hi PJ, you can install the app on as many devices as you like and connect on up to five of them for one account. For all of the other devices, you still need to input your IPVanish username and password.

      • PJ Visconti October 4, 2017 at 10:11 am - Reply

Hi Troy this is an excerpt that comes from the Terms & Conditions of IPVanish.

“All prices are quoted for one user year on one device. You agree that all fees charged by IPVanish for accessing the Services will be automatically charged to your payment account.”

If I am reading this correctly If I add one or more devices to my service, I will be billed for each device.

Please clarify this versus your previous response above

PJ, they may have not updated their TOS. I use there service and one account will work on up to five devices. If you look at their home page, one of the benefits listed is 5 simultaneous connections on multiple devices. Also, keep in mind that they provide a 7-day money back guarantee so you have absolutely nothing to lose when trying their service.

What about if I use more than one at a time? THANKS viscopj

Hello PJ, you can use one IPVanish account on up to five devices at the same time.

This happens some time, Try restarting the hardware and software. If that does not work contact the support via live chat, they will solve the issue.
It often happens with me but all i have to do is to restart ivacy vpn and some time contact the representative.

    • Clive Savage July 2, 2017 at 5:42 am - Reply

If you have an android phone you could download the vpn app on to that then download apps2fire on the phone also. You then use apps2fire to install it onto the fire box. There are other ways of doing this also.. …youtube is your friend here.
      Hope that helps.

As if by magic, I am without Kodi on a box that once held v. 16.1. I even subscribed to IP Vanish. Tutorials recommend removing the old version before installing 17.3 – done that. BUT, Kodi will not allow me to install on my box for some reason. I thought because I had a box with version 4.4.2 os, perhaps I could update that through their support site, but it says unable – check your servier argent. Even switched to non-protected IP and still didn’t work. Awaiting reply by e-mail. Meanwhile, any suggestions?

    • Rafael Rivera July 11, 2017 at 11:57 am - Reply

look for mygica apk or ftmc apk. since you have a 4.2.2 box, these were designed so that you could update to the latest Kodi with out having to buy a new box.

I have setup my Android TV Box, just as instructed. However, each time I leave the app, the connection
is no longer established. For instance, after I have connected to the VPN server and check the IP, it has resorted back to what has been provided by my ISP. Any suggestions?

    • Todd German May 1, 2017 at 9:48 pm - Reply

For me, it appears that the VPN service does not work via the app. I have to set it up under the VPN settings of my Android TV Box.

My provider Spectrum (Charter) blocked information about Tick Box that I was interested in. They erased an email from them. How can this be legal? If I pay for the wifi service, what I get over it should not be their concern. Anyone else have trouble like that?

    Hi Troy,
I have been trying to load Nordvpn onto my new Android tv box (Android 6.0.1) many times using the usual Playstore route, with no luck. It comes up with a “Download Successful” screen but has a banner across it saying something about the UI not operating. It stays there until the app is uninstalled. This also occurs with Cyberghost. Any thoughts on what could be wrong?

    • Troy March 1, 2017 at 10:54 am - Reply

Hello Ian, sorry but I don’t have any tutorials on these services. I tested a bunch of them prior to going with IPVanish and it was one of the few that actually worked well with Fire TV/Stick and Android Boxes.

Thanks Troy. Do you know if IPVanish do a trial period. I don’t really want to commit to something that still does not work with this box?

Hey Carlos, I’ve found the way to setup purevpn on android tv box via their support. They suggested me to start with downloading their android app and login and connect it as we usually do on our android phones. It worked for me, but they also suggested that some android boxes might be able to work smooth with the app for which they gave me a few manual setups (for pptp and l2tp protocols) which is plan B if the app has issues. I suggest you to ask their support team if the app thing ain’t working for you. They’ve also added a tutorial for setting up on android tv box in their support center, which might also help you. Cheers!
