This new box comes at the perfect time now that Amazon is hinting at the possibility of ditching Android and launch their own operating system on Fire TV systems.  If that happens, many will flock to Android TV/Google TV solutions such as this.  This migration has already started due to Amazon clamping down on various modifications such as the use of 3rd party launchers.

Initial Thoughts

I really like what I’m seeing with this new Android TV Box.

The price $139.99 appears to be a bit on the high side but when you compare this device to the Amazon Fire TV Cube or NVIDIA Shield, it’s probably about right.

Remember that you can get a 10% discount when using the discount code “troypoint” at checkout.

At first glance, I don’t see anything that I would change.

The biggest complaint regarding current Fire TV devices and Android TV/Google TV boxes is lack of internal storage.

Some may argue that the 32GB of internal storage isn’t enough but I would disagree. The internal storage should be used for applications and app data and I highly doubt that most people would exceed that.  Keep in mind that external storage can always be added through the USB ports or Micro SD slot.

This photo describes the details of the new MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe.

Simple Setup

Upon initial setup, the only problem was that the remote wouldn’t pair properly with my Television.  This is important so we can control the TV volume, power, and inputs with the MECOOL remote.

I reached out to MECOOL about this issue and they ensured me that this would be fixed soon.  Here is their reply.

Hi Troy,

Glad to hear that you received the package!
There is a problem with the “set remote button” function of KM2 PLUS DELUXE.
That is caused by “Google has not yet successfully authorized the key for this part of the box.”
It can be solved after authorization from Google, and we are applying to Google.

Since I received the above message, MECOOL has released and APK that we can sideload to address this remote control issue.  My video below shows how to install and setup the application.

Android TV 11

The MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe is running Android TV 11 but uses the Google TV user interface.

Android TV/Google TV installed

4K HDR Ultra HD

As with most streaming boxes, this Google TV box will support 4K HDR.

I tested all of the popular free streaming apps along with Netflix and Prime Video and all of them played buffer-free.

Dolby Vision & Dolby Atmos

Unlike the previous KM2, the PLUS Deluxe will support both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos.

Dolby Vision & Atmos

WiFi 6 & Gigabit LAN Support

WiFi 6 & Gigabit LAN port included for fast download speeds.  You will find my speed download/upload speed tests below.  They are blazing fast!

WiFi 6 & Gigabit

Google Assistant & Remote

Google Assistant is included due to the fact that this is certified Android TV. Take a look at that remote control!

As I mention in my video above, I’m not a huge fan of the numbers on the remote as I personally won’t have any need for those.

Google Assistant on MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe

MECOOL introduced a built-in application that allows us to map the four buttons at the bottom of the remote.  This is awesome!  We can re-map the YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video, and Google Play buttons so they open other apps that we choose.

Remote app re-mapper

Chromecast Built-In

Chromecast works on this device which is important to those who like to cast videos/photos from their phones, tablets, PCs, etc.

Free StartMail Trial

I thoroughly tested this with my Google Pixel 7 Pro and it worked as it should with absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Chromecast Built-in

Game Ready

Connect a Bluetooth controller and turn this Android TV Box into a gaming machine!

I did test this on a few games that I’ve purchased from Google Play and they all worked flawlessly.  I’m not a huge gamer so I didn’t test the high CPU intensive games.  I still recommend the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for those who are serious about gaming on their streaming devices.

Game Ready

Device Inputs & Outputs

The MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe comes with the following ports.

ir port, spdif, av, hdmi, lan, power

  • 2 USB 2.0
  • Micro SD Card
  • Gigabit
  • IR
  • 3.5mm AV
  • Optical Out
  • HDMI
  • Power

This has everything that you would need but I wish they would have included USB 3.0 ports instead of 2.0.

The Gigabit port is a nice touch and will aid in playing large media files across a local network.

Sideloading Apps

Sideloading apps that aren’t available within Google Play works as it should.

I installed Surfshark VPN, Kodi, TiviMate, SmartTubeNext, and Launcher Manager through the TROYPOINT Toolbox and they all performed extremely well.

Sideloading works

We always get the question whether these new devices will allow for sideloading 3rd party apps.  We highly doubt that this option will ever be removed as the developers need a way to test their applications.

3rd Party Launchers

I installed my favorite launcher, ATV Launcher Pro, and set it as default with Launcher Manager.

3rd Party Launcher

It worked!

This is one of the best modifications that you can make on an Android TV/Google TV streaming system.  It allows for customizing the user interface and gets rid of ads for streaming services that will never be used.

MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe Download/Upload Speeds

I used the Analiti Speed test app for the following tests.

I have one GB Fiber download speed plan through my Internet Service Provider.

During the WiFi tests, I’m connected to the 5GHz band on my ASUS RT-AX86U Pro WiFi 6 Router. This router resides in the same room as the new Android TV Box (approximately 20 feet away from the wireless router).

I’m using Surfshark VPN as my VPN on Chicago Server.

Gigabit Speed Tests

Gigabit Download/Upload Speed

Surfshark VPN Off: 480 Mbps download & 110 Mbps upload

Surfshark VPN On: 146 Mbps download & 96 Mbps upload

WiFi 6 Speed Tests

WiFi Upload/Downalod Speed

Surfshark VPN Off: 570 Mbps download & 243 Mbps upload

Surfshark VPN On: 166 Mbps download & 111 Mbps upload

The wireless download speed is the best I’ve ever seen on any streaming device that I’ve reviewed!  It’s surprising that the speeds are better on WiFi than when connected to Gigabit.

Both tests above get an A+ from me.

Expanding Internal Storage

The KM2 PLUS Deluxe comes with 32GB of internal storage so most probably won’t need to expand but I still want to test it.

Usually I connect a USB flash drive for testing purposes but this time I changed things up a bit.

I connected a Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD with an SSD to USB adapter.  I wanted to use an SSD as it’s going to be more reliable for the main reason I want to use it later in this review.  I will try pairing it up with the IPTV Player TiviMate and test how well recording works on the KM2 PLUS Deluxe.

You will see that the drive is recognized after plugging it into the Android TV Box.

Expand Internal Storage

I then formatted it as device storage.

Format as Device Storage

Formatting.  The true name of the hard drive is labeled as JMicron and that must be who Samsung uses to build these SSD drives.

After doing this, I was able to move apps to the external SSD drive with ease.

Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that the drive automatically ejects from time-to-time.  I’ve always stated that expanding internal storage comes with problems and this is one of them.  More than likely, the issue has to do with the Android TV operating system.

drive ejected

Recording in TiviMate

TiviMate is the most popular IPTV Player and I know we will have questions about recording.

Since Android 10 we’ve had nothing but problems with writing to external drives and this poses a problem for recording in TiviMate.

Usually expanding internal storage takes care of that problem but as I mention above the drive ejects from time to time which creates an error while recording.  The drive will reconnect after rebooting the device, but if you’re in the middle of a recording when it ejects, recording will stop.

You will see in the image below that I recorded a TV show on the same channel and both of them resulted in an error due to the ejection.

TiviMate recording error on MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe

I personally record to my Windows PC with SMB within TiviMate as it’s been more dependable than external storage for me.  Thankfully, due to the video-on-demand streaming options, there’s no longer a huge need to record.

How to Record IPTV with SMB on TiviMate

As mentioned earlier, these problems stem from the newer Android security settings that don’t allow us to use external storage like we previously could.

The above shows what I recorded resulted in approximately 4GB of space and that was for 3 hours of recording time.  You can always use the internal storage to record, you just won’t have as much space as an external drive would.  Keep in mind that this device comes with 32GB of storage so you should have enough space for a few recordings.

I’m not a big fan of doing anything with USB drives on systems based on Android TV 10 and higher due to these ridiculous folder permissions.

Regarding the colored buttons on the remote, those can be customized within TiviMate!  It almost seems as if the top section of the KM2 PLUS Deluxe remote was specifically designed for TiviMate.

Mouse Toggle Working

Many of us use applications designed for phones and tablets and we must use a mouse toggle for Android TV to navigate those apps.

Thankfully, the Mouse Toggle for Android TV which is available through the TROYPOINT Toolbox does work fabulously on the new MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe.

Mouse Toggle

Is MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe Be Filled With Malware?

We see this question a lot for streaming devices that aren’t as popular as Amazon, Google, and NVIDIA.

MECOOL has been manufacturing Android TV Boxes for a long time and not once have we seen accusations of them inserting malware or viruses into the firmware or preinstalled applications.  This company is becoming a big player in the Android TV/Google TV landscape and many TROYPOINT fans are already using their past models.

Also, the fact that these are Android/Google certified is another reason to believe that MECOOL is on the up-and-up.  The malware infested Android TV Boxes that we’ve seen are always running stock Android or a hacked version of Android TV.  They aren’t using certified Android TV/Google TV operating system on the generic boxes that have been flagged.

Final Thoughts

This is a fabulous Android TV Box!

Many will compare this to the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro but the SHIELD still has a more powerful processor but that’s going to be overkill for most people who just want to stream.  The SHIELD is great for those who want to play CPU intensive games but we don’t need that type of power to stream movies, TV shows, and live channels.

My biggest complaint is lack of USB 3.0 ports.  This would help for those who want to connect external hard drives.

The surprise for me is the blazing fast download speeds with both the WiFi 6 chip and Gigabit port.  As mentioned in the video above while doing the download tests, it’s the fastest I’ve ever seen.

The primary concern with MECOOL is that we probably won’t see too many system updates but some would argue that’s actually a good thing.  Let’s be honest, have you ever seen an Android TV update that made you say, “Wow?”  Usually, it’s the other way around and they remove things that once worked such as the storage file permissions.

I rate this box 4.7 out of 5 stars.

  1. Damn. Looks awesome but that price is steep for a China box. What would you recommend for a cheaper box with Android TV?

  2. Avatar for carlbs carlbs says:

My KM1 Deluxe (4/32) is a great little streamer. My only minor complaint is that it would overheat and shut down every couple of days. Easy solution was a cheap USB powered little fan that sits under it and plugs into the side of the MECOOL. Hasn’t shut down once in 6 months since. Love the internal memory and features. I bet this new KM2 PLUS Deluxe will be a winner.

  3. Only USB 2.0? Seems like foolish cost cutting and would prevent me from buying it.

  4. Avatar for AMD237 AMD237 says:

Onn and Tivo 4k’s are both fantastic for their respective prices, and both run AndroidTV. Any of these in the Mecool line are good too, but obviously more expensive…depends on your needs.

  5. Anyone have any experience with this new device? Seems to be comparable to Nvidia shield but better price.

  6. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

  7. I have the older Mecool KM 2 Plus, and a Shield pro and for me the Shield is far better, does not compare for me.

  8. None of them are reviews just specs wanted to know user experience.

There are a bunch of threads with info. Some may have stuff you can use and sources to reference. I don’t have a deluxe so haven’t read them, but it’s a start.

km2 plus is a nice box but is no where near a shield in any comparison.

  11. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Hey @TXRon do you know if there’s much difference between the + and the Deluxe? I guess I’d have to do an online search and read the specs, but was just curious.

  12. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

Miki only difference as far as I can tell is the plus has av1 codec and some dolby additions.

  13. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Tx @TXRon so reading all the info on the + models will definately help. Have a great day and best of the season to you and your family.

  14. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

the original km2 had a S905X2 vs the plus which has a s905X4

  15. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Well you know more about this stuff than I do, but from seeing conversations I have read, the x4 is very good.

  16. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

yes the x4 is currently the most common/found on todays boxes.

  17. Have you used this box? I am asking about the this box because the specs are pretty nice and it’s a good bit cheaper than Nvidia shield. If device is true to specs think it may be good alternative to shield. Only care about this because of price and specs trying to see if anyone here has any information on the actual user experience. Because specs can say one thing but until you use one of these non mainstream boxes you never really know.

  18. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

Ive used or tried most mecool boxes, however the km2 plus is the newest and I havent tried it or really interested in trying because its just another x905 box. This is just an upgraded km2 with dolby additions and AV1 added, other than that its most like other boxes. A comparison with a shield is its not even going to be close if you go by bench test only. The downside is they didnt upgrade the memory/ram. 2GB ram is on the low side but most likely wont be an issue however most similar boxes have 4GB ram. The Shield uses a tegra chip and blows this box out of the water.

  19. According to their Twitter it’s 4gb ram 32 gb memory seems like not much information is known right now I’ll be waiting for the first reviews to drop.

  20. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

*Thanks for this review, the box looks great! But I’m holding off enthusiasm until I find out if I can use one of the USB ports for additional storage with an SSD.

  25. Excellent Android box. Just got mine over the weekend. I’ve had both the old and new (most recent) shield pro and this is just as good. Doesn’t have upscaling like the shield but that doesn’t work very good IMO anyway. As Troy shows in his video download speeds are faaaaaaaaaast on this thing. 32GB of storage is plenty for me. No complaints yet from me and I prefer the remote compared to the shield remote.

I did like the look of this $28 T95Z Plus Android 12 Box First Impessions & Setup Video Now Available from the Troypoint email just the other day.

I guess with the MeCool you are going to get the hardliner NVidia fans pointing out difference between the two, but the obvious price discrepancy is what this box is aiming for. You cannot really just call it a China box otherwise we could just call the Nvidia a Taiwan box.

The fact that Android devices are getting a lot better, is upping the game for the now dated Vvidia boxes and with the price aimed at generating cash from a perceived increase in functionality, Nvidia may have to either up their game or reduce the price of their TV boxes.

I am one of those people who doesn’t need the latest gadgets, and will watch from the sidelines as newer devices come out with better functionality or wait until they have ironed out the kinks in these type of machines first.

  27. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

Miki ive mentioned that box before. Nice specs. I think @AMD237 purchased one.

  28. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

Nice Review @TROYPOINT . Just looking at the specs I would think this box is/should be the Mecool centerpiece/TOP box. Seems to have it all.(mostly)

  29. Thanks Ron. I agree. Someone made the point which is also correct that the Shield still has a stronger processor. But, my take is that the Shield is overkill for most people who just want to stream. If they want to play games then that’s a different conversation as they would probably want the stronger CPU. You aren’t going to notice a difference in streaming 4K or 1080P content when comparing this with the Shield.

    About Mecool KM2 DELUXE.

It is fast. Use a good HDMI cable if u do not want interrupts in picture and sound.
    Netflix hbo Amazon no problem.

Wifi is 2 times faster as ethernet. BUT…

Wifi 6 disconnect s after about 10/15 min till i reboot the box, this is the only device that has this problem in my home.

    Maybe wifi goes to sleep?

This box is not 100% working with Atmos. if the stream container is DD+/ATMOS it plays Atmos no problem., like used in Netflix HBO Prime for example.

If the stream container is Truehd/ATMOS, the player does not choose Atmos so there is no sound.

Tried with Kodi and blu-ray Rips.

With my Shield pro 2019 there is no problem on the same movies and streams.

Some.dolby vision streams are not recognized, but if you use HDR always on, you have less problems.

    Hope they fix this problem.

  31. Avatar for AMD237 AMD237 says:

The G2 is a nice box. I really like it. Not more than my Shield, but it has been a terrific streamer ever since I got it. I have thrown a lot at it, soundbar, 4k movies, etc etc and it has handled all of that as well as any other box I have.

  32. Avatar for gary7 gary7 says:

without AC-4 decoding you cannot playback any of the new ATSC 3.0 broadcasts without using the SiliconDust program which is not very user friendly.

  33. unfortunately the shield is not as great as you claim as the box will not play 4k streaming on the directv stream app. the channels are in there guide but when you press to play the channels it comes up as your device is not 4k compatible . so i wonder if this new box will play those channels or not as the tivo stream 4k does

  34. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

The Shield Pro certainly is 4K compatible. I play 4K content every day. Not to mention with AI upscaling to AI-Enhanced I even get that upscaling to 4K for me. I can’t speak for the Direct Stream App, it isn’t something I use.

  35. I am in the middle of trying to set up my new MeCool KM2 Deluxe, setup appears to be very straightforward.

My issue is with the IPTV service, I’m able to load IPTV Smarters Pro fine, I login, update each category & then when I go to categories each time it will kick me back to the Live TV, MOVIES & Series menu.

I’ve been in steady communication with the Discord group for the past two days & have not received a resolution.

Any help anyone can provide will be appreciated. I also have a backup IPTV of Aurora and everything works fine with that service.

I want to switch to IPTV Smarters .

    Please advise

One of these days, we’ll see a flagship box that will have a SoC that will support 4K120…one day.

Mecool is checking the right boxes…at least the majority of them. At $140 plus shipping (though offset by TP discount) - that’s getting mighty close to sale price ($170 +free local retail pickup) Shield neighborhood though.

While @TROYPOINT does imply that the shield may be excessive for the casual 1080p streamer, there’s still factors that needs to be considered.

4K is the new low cost standard. 1080p rests mostly within the existinf installed user base. Quality A-list gaming is still nice incentive - GeForce Now and Tegra is hard to beat even if you’re tire kicking living room gaming. Ai upscaler is…well, awesome, and for now, exclusive.

I’m not trying to twist this into a Shield vs the world post “again” - though while this Mecool can certainly be considered a shield alternative (with an asterisk), unless they can make a more attractive price point (like $99), I don’t know if has the leverage to sway the targeted demographic.

Thanks for your input. You helped me gain a new piece of knowledge. I never knew, until now, that fiber HDMI cables even existed. Wow. Expensive, but cool. Now to read up on if special ports are needed to use these to their full speed potential. Thanks.
Well after reading up on fiber HDMI they certainly aren’t ready for “home” use. To many limitations, most notably the lack of eARC or Arc, not to mention they’re unidirectional and need exactvl input and output ports. I’m sure these limitations will eventually be overcome but there isn’t any noticeable difference in 4K playback over standard, and cheaper high speed HDMI cables. Great for commercial use though. Maybe when more 8K is available we’ll see them.

I downloaded it from your site and inside the app. After downloading and installing the app. my km2 plus still would not work on TV, Soundbar or video receiver. My question to you is this app only for the km2 plus deluxe? I am still getting the same error as before i installed the app. Do you have any suggestion on why it is not working on the km2 plus… Thank you

  48. Hello, yes that remote control app is only for the new MECOOL KM2 PLUS Deluxe. You should reach out to MECOOL support to see if they can help you with the older version.

  49. Mecool has been a terrible company for support. After Troypoint recommended the KM7, I purchased one almost a year ago. There have been no updates at all to the box. The security patch is over 14 months old at this point. Numerous emails to Mecool asking about the situation have gone unanswered.

This lack of support spells a big ‘no’ from me for Mecool products. It appears they just want to sell the hardware.

Hopefully this will warn others about the lack of support for the box if you buy it.

  50. I also agree, I have looked for a update for KM 2 Plus and nothing, contacted support and they sent link to install via USB KM2 Plus C2.4.5_20230703, has anyone tried this update and why no OTA?

  56. Hi Troy,

I am very interested in this box as I have a similar Internet connection to yours. I am using a Chromecast which gets around 50gb download with Surfshark on. I am mainly streaming 4k content but with the mention of 8k on analiti (which I’m sure is a ways off) I was wondering if with the 160gb+ speed of this box gets a green check mark on the tests? Hoping to future proof for a bit. :grinning: Or is the issue with buffering always going to be a problem due to the speed on the other end with whoever is hosting the content?

  57. I put a video on YouTube for the remote APK and you can install through TROYPOINT Toolbox.

  58. Is there a video review on this to prove it specs don’t always match actual performance sometimes especially from these third party companies. This mecool device seems to be it and a good bit cheaper than shield.

  59. Seems to be real deal will be great Nvidia alternative

  60. yes, there are several reviews for this guy, here is a good one!

  64. good evening all. just purchased my MECOOL KM2 PLUS today! I use coupon extensions on chrome and the coupert extension just saved me $27.99 with the code “20OFF”. brought my total down to $112.00.

as long as this devices functions like my onn 4k tv boxes, the wife and kid should be able to use them easily. the remotes are very similar and the layout on the homescreen looks the same.

will mostly be used to stream OTA channels via TABLO, cable channels from TIVIMATE, and using steam link to mirror my pc games to my main tv.

  65. I’m in Canada and I just picked 1 up from the mekool site for $160. I got 15% off. I put it in my cart but didn’t pull the trigger and the next day i had a email from them offering 15% off so i bought 1

  67. I totally agree and Merry Christmas and happy New Years to you as well.

  68. Yeah nice box, but unfortunately it doesn’t support Atmos or DTS-HD like the shield does he only improvements is now they have 1000 Ethernet connections… not like the other KM boxes that have 100 connection

  69. Grretings,

Do you have the new KM2 Plus Deluxe ?

  70. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Are you asking me if I have one? Not yet. It’s somewhere on/over the Pacific ocean I suspect. I ordered one on the 23rd and they shipped it on the 26th. I’m looking forward to adding it to my ATMOS theater system.

  71. Hello insiders/patrons, I addressed this inquiry to Troy but if anyone happens to know the answer I would appreciate your help.

    Thank you,

  72. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

For 8K 50Mbs down is a good starting point. From my research 50-80 is best.

  73. Thank you, so 160mbs should be really good for 8k then?

  74. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Pretty much anything over 50 mb a second will do good if you’re getting 160 that’s fantastic it’s about what I’m getting, I get between about 150 and 160 MB down and about 60 megabytes up. From there most of it is having to do with trying to cut down on any unnecessary buffering that you’re having and that’s a whole different topic everything from cables to connections to Wi-Fi to ethernet it’s a huge thing. You can do some research. Troy has a bunch of tutorials on what to do for buffering and how to limit it and reduce it. but yeah you’re getting 160 that’s what I get and I very rarely have any problem. Most of your buffering, that you’re going to get, is as a result of the supplier. Usually time of day, everybody’s on there so your VPN server for is at 85-90%, maybe where you’re getting source from, to watch something, that server is over run, because everybody’s hooked up to it, so it takes a little bit of practice, and a little bit of work, but you can find out where to shift your servers to, and at what time of day and everything else, I stick with wireguard protocol, it’s about the best, and with IPTV I changed the movies and videos to HLS to watch them and it works for me so buffering is a never-ending issue for a lot of people and something that you have to learn to work on. Use the site search, you’d be surprised at what you can find.

  75. Ok let me know if has Dolby Atmost and DTS:X and DTS-HD when plugged in to amp in your entertainment system

Of topic, but I am getting error code 502 on every TiviMate channel no matter the category. I forced stop and cleared cache on TiviMate, and restarted KM1 Deluxe device (4/32). Also restarted modem/router. 93 mbps down with SS engaged. Any ideas what I can do next? Or is this something I have to wait out?

  81. If they fixed add a device with this box why don’t they fix the km2 plus. I still can’t control the add a device on the km2 plus. You would think the new fix would fixed both of the boxes… Pretty frustrating Mecool.

  82. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Try it without the VPN. Reboot the KM1. If the VPN is the problem, switch servers on it.

  84. The km2 plus. It will not add a device.

  85. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Yes you said that twice. WHAT device?

  86. Hey Miki, do you know if there has been a released for the km2 plus for “add a device”? I see troy has and app in the toolbox for the km2 plus deluxe.

  87. Avatar for carlbs carlbs says:

Thanks Moose. Tried all that. Different protocols and servers in Surfshark too. Finally checked my iptv provider account and it says I’m expired even though have autopay in place. I guess I’ll have to contact them. Guess that explains why I couldn’t add or refresh my playlist in TiviMate.

  88. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Did you check out the update released 3 days ago?

  89. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

LOL yea that’ll do it every time! :::

  90. I check last week using OTA. No go. I will check tomorrow. I just seen Troy updating the newer km2 from I assume an app frim. Mecool worked like a charm on that device but not on my. Work on the deluxe but not on the plus.

  91. I just got mine today. Having issues with my Vizio sound bar. I downloaded the remote fix and that works perfectly. I can adjust the sound bar. But almost every movie I try, there’s little to no sound coming out. I’ve tried the automatic setting under sound. I’ve picked no sound bar. I’ve tried the pass through. Can’t seem to get the surround sound working. If anyone has any suggestions for me to try I would greatly appreciate it. I’ll mess around more tomorrow.

  92. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Almost here. Should have it in a couple of days!

  93. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

The update started rolling out as the article I connected to above :point_up:says. Read through it and you’ll learn when you might get it, but it’s out there now.

  94. I have a Sony Sound bar the volume is low on it as well. I have to turn the volume pretty high to get a comfortable level of sound. The sould bar is connected to the TV using the HDMI ARC. I changed it to the video output with not much improvement but was a little better. I check for the update from MeCool this morning and I still do not have the update for the audio control. I will check most everyday until I get it. My sheild works so much better. I also connected one of my Amazon sticks the volume is higner than with the Mecool. I still rather use my Mecool or my Shield. Amazon is getting to be to much especially since they are not only increasing there yearly subscriptions they are going to start charging for non-commercials on there movies and seeies. I don’t have answer for that crap. The rich get richer. If it wasn’t for the free shipping it would be so long. Amazon Prime has over 200 million subscribers. Pretty easy math if all of them paid for the extra $39 for commercial free content. Not including the extra money for the subscription that’s a cool 7,800,000,000. I guess Bezo needs more fuel for his rockets. Ok, enough complaining. I wish and pray each and everyone of you have a Happy New Year and may this world find it’s way to Peace.

  95. Thank you Miki. The update was not here today. I will keep checking. I hope you are handling the cold well. I don’t think I could handle it I get cold at 50 degress these day. I hope the new year finds you in good health and spirits. Happy New Year to you and your family. Take care

  96. I don’t know why no OTA my understanding it is being sent out now. I have not received it yet. I have contacted Mecool as well about an APK updated. No answers. Frustrated!!!

  97. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Their site stated that the OTA update is being rolled out in stages. No idea how to determine when yours will get the option to update. Read the article the rollout schedule is posted in there.

  98. Miki, i have read the article several times. I see the release dates but it does not say what part of the country the releases are related to. Thank you for posting that article. I will check on the date of each release. I will also pass the information to my daughter and a couple of friend that own this device. Thanks again Miki.

  99. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

It just shows percentages and dates. By January 19, 2024 100% of devices will have it.

  100. I just got mine and great speed and picture. My only problem is that any live TV apps, the only way I can get sound out of my Vizio sound bar is to use Bluetooth. ARC and optical work for other apps just not tivimate, Philo, etc. Anyone else have this problem? I have it hooked up to a new TCL Qled TV.

  101. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

In TiViMate try Settings>Playback> Audio passthrough and turn it on. See if that does it. Make sure Audio decoder is set to Hardware.

  102. No luck. I just discovered that there is sound but it is super low, I have to turn volume up all the way. Tried speakers on TV and the same thing.

  103. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

What I had to do was make sure the volume on my device was up full, then using my TV remote made sure that volume was up full. Then go back to my device remote and turn it down to 30% volume and start something to watch.

  104. Still no luck. Bluetooth is the only thing that gives me full volume. Just weird how weyd and sycler work just fine on optical and ARC, just not any live TV.

  105. Yes, I see that. I ask for a download today. It appear to do it. Now when I use add device I do not get cannot connect to google servers anymore. I am getting the error message something when wrong.

  106. I pre-ordered the KM2 Plus Deluxe, and when using it we experienced Netflix dropping (blank screen), and video freezing while audio continued to play, and of course the remote pairing issue that you address in this video-so thanks for doing that Troy. Ultimately, while impressed with the system speed, and the 32G of internal storage and 4G DDR RAM, I was not impressed that it is Netflix certified, and yet we still had trouble running Netflix through it. I have paid the shipping cost ($70) that MeCool will requires on all returns, and await their decision to either replace or refund the purchase. Personally I would prefer that they refund it, as we have no such Netflix issues with our Fire Stick 4K Maxx 2 or the ONN Android TV with Google overlay box from Walmart.

  107. Avatar for carlbs carlbs says:

Yes, this has happened to me when I must have mistakenly turned down the volume on my device remote that is paired with my audio receiver. I generally use the receiver remote to control volume and didn’t realize I’d turned the volume button on the device remote lower. So make sure the volume control on the device remote is all the way up.

  108. Like many others im frustrated and bewildered with the lack of volume. I had to connect a Bluetooth bose speaker at max volume im barely able to hear iptv (tivimate) or kodi. It’s to bad,it would be a nice box if you could hear anything. Nice pic, good speeds.but…

  109. Those with volume problems.

This may be due to you setting the box volume low at first when the remote wasn’t paired to your TV.

To fix this, go into Device Settings / Set up remote buttons and forget the device that you have paired whether it’s a TV or Soundbar. This will allow you to control the volume of the actual box itself again.

Then, use the volume up button and turn it up to max.

After that, re-pair your TV or Soundbar.

This hasn’t happened to me as more than likely my box volume was already set to the highest level when I paired the remote to my TV.

    It’s worth a shot.

Hello. I have watched the KM2 plus deluxe video a couple times. Ordered one. received it today. It will not connect by wifi, ethernet or by my android phone. Has anyone but me had this problem? I’ve setup several fire sticks, onn sticks, even a dynalink when Walmart carried them. Any solutions other than waiting for a defective device to arrive from China. I just found out this device is avaiable on Amazon. Thanks for any possible help. Don’t think I’m doing anything wrong.

  111. Avatar for TXRon TXRon says:

strange for sure. Try setting the scanning always to on, if its off. Make sure ethernet and wifi switches are on… just brainstorming here, im sure you prob already checked. Make sure no proxy settings are there. And make sure ip settings are dhcp.

edit… in dev options set mobile data to always active

  112. This was 100% what was wrong with my sound bar!! Thank you so much!

  113. RPL - I just received my box today and have a similar issue. I have two wifi networks available (each in 5G and standard), and while my Mecool will connect to all of them it then goes to a “Please wait” screen and ultimately tells me it can’t reach the internet. I have multiple devices running on these wifi networks, so I know they are functioning properly. I wrote Mecool about the issue…and hope it really doesn’t take 48 hours to hear back. I’ve tried resetting the box, resetting my routers, etc. Can’t do anything via the settings on the box because the startup mode renders all of the buttons on the remote inactive while the setup is taking place.

  114. See my solution that I replied to you with and your sound problem will be fixed.

  115. Hello everyone. I received my mecool km2 deluxe box yesterday and was very excited to test it out. I have seen similar issue’s I am having but some have not. I’ve seen dolby vision isn’t working correctly and can attest to that. It seems to not like any MP4 Dolby vision files being played. It will play at first but go to fast forward and it will lock up.(Or mine does). Also volume issues seem to be related to files as well along with dts … At least for me that is. I am running a sonos arc soundbar which is capable of running everything but dts. So some may be having possible issues with that? It doesn’t like switching to HDR on its own either which gives the option to keep HDR on always which for some reason forces everything into Dolby vision regardless of being in Dolby vision. Does anyone else have these issues or is it just me? Not exactly issues we should be having for a somewhat expensive box. Appreciate all the help and discussion about this device. Hope everyone is having a safe a warm winter!!

  116. Thanks Troy i will give it a try when i get home. I appreciate ya. Cheers

Sadly this box doesn’t seem quite ready for prime time, and for the moment it’s not a great alternative to the Nvidia Shield.Maybe it will be in the future. But as it is I wouldn’t feel it’s such a great value atm.

  118. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Well I’ve had my unit for over a week now and I’m impressed with the speed so far, but it’s not a huge jump from the Onn’s that I have, tbh. I use a 64 gig USB for expansion on those so I don’t really feel the pinch there either. One thing: I’m going to have to contact support about my Anker Compact Bluetooth keyboard refusing to connect to it. This kb connects fine to the Onns and my desktop as well as both my Raspi 4’s and my phone, so I’m pretty sure it’s not the kb. We’ll see what support has to say about that.
Would I buy another one knowing now what all the hullabaloo is about? Probably not. The Onn works so well I think it would be unwise to spend 6 times the money for the slight increase in speed. Funny thing - the Onn remotes and the MeCool remotes are, aside from the number buttons on the MeCool, identical. Could this mean what I think it means? You decide!

  119. Still going back and forth with the terrible, SLOW tech support from Mecool trying to get my box to connect to the internet. It’s gotta be defective based on others being able to use theirs. Still connects to both WiFi networks and via Ethernet, but in all cases “can’t reach internet”. I just hope they’ll give me a refund - this is leaving a very bad taste in my mouth.

  120. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

wjschulz: I just had that happen to me today too. I was connected to my router (wifi) but it reported that I had no internet. I switched off/on the wifi radio several times and that didn’t work so I rebooted, and then it connected and I had internet again. Hmmm…

  121. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

I just got a return email from for my Bluetooth problem with the Anker keyboard. They told me, quote: In the Bluetooth matching interface, you can press the “right button” first, and then press the “OK button”.

    It worked!

I sent that email at about 10:45 this morning and got the reply at 1:00 AM, just a little while ago. I would say for speed that’s pretty good considering the time difference.

  122. When you say rebooted, do you mean the Mecool box or your router? I’ve tried both several times.

  123. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

I just rebooted the MeCool wjschulz.

  124. Six reboots (unplugging/replugging) with no success. Looks like I have a fancy doorstop.

  125. I’ve been using Mecool exclusively for the past five years and have had absolutely no problems whatsoever.

Troy mentions in his reviews that there are usually no updates but it it’s working well, why do you need an update? Tell me one Android update that has made a huge impact? In my opinion, they gone downhill due to the file permissions.

Security for an Android TV Device? This is a bit paranoid.

  126. Avatar for carlbs carlbs says:

Funny because my MeCool KM1 Deluxe remote is nothing like the ONN but exactly the same as my old Walmart Dynalink (which also still works great – better than a stick). Ironically, I couldn’t pair the remote for the new MeCool and then realized I had the Dynalink in my hand.

  127. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Yea I think this isn’t an Android problem per se, but a MeCool mod issue. We might be getting the first colts out of the gate and who knows, maybe MeCool will update the firmware as they discover new bugs. For instance, I had no problem pairing my remote but others needed a patch. Let’s hope they roll out a new Rev.

  128. OK RPL…I’m up and running, but not without issues. The Mecool Tech Support is definitely a challenge. When I convinced the tech that I knew how to do all of the simple things he was suggesting (e.g., restarts, changing cables, router settings, etc.) he sent me a software “reset” package that I could use on a USB stick to reset the device to ground zero. It worked! Found and attached to wifi instantly after the reset and set-up went without a hitch. I was told that I was not allowed to “distribute this software” - but know that you can ask for it for your use if you’ve exhausted all other pathways.

  129. Avatar for RPL RPL says:

I had emailed Mecool tech support and this was their response. Seriously? Describe my problem and attach a video presentation. I ultimately solved the problem using an extra router I had. The KM2 Plus deluxe connected like it was supposed to. I have no idea what the router difference was. The KM2 was close to both, so it shouldn’t have been signal strength. I originally though the KM2 might have a reset. On the left side there is a paperclip size opening that had a click when paper clip was inserted. But nothing worked until I swapped routers.

That’s the exact boilerplate email reply I got from sales too. I simply forwarded my original email to and they replied within 12 hours with a solution that solved my problem. It was pretty painless for me. I know others might have more complex problems so I don’t discount that they might be slow and/or unclear due to the language barrier and sheer number of tech support emails they get per day.

I’m not sure you’re aware of this RPL, but in the Settings/About there is a Factory Reset choice. Choosing that should put your box in “as new” condition software-wise.

EDIT: Oh and I didn’t send any video evidence.

  131. I get no sound application from my Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe. Paired properly with both my LG 4K TV and my LG sound bar volumn indicators go from min to max and only get very very low background audio out. I am disappointed, is there a fix or is this just a bad one. Sent email to MeCool … No response.

  132. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

lorichomd66 - about 6 days ago Troy posted a fix for this. You need to go into Settings/ Set Up Remote Buttons/Volume Control, and use your remote to turn the BOX volume up (or down as needed) - I leave mine all the way up. IGNORE what the volume level on your sound bar or tv is set to here. This is the BOX volume control. I know it seems weird the way it works but…hey I didn’t design it (it works that way on the other streamer boxes I own too so it’s not a MeCool thing it’s an android setting). HTH

OK, so the wifi issue (bug) has hit me too it seems. Several times I’m in the middle of a tv show (TiviMate) and the error that I don’t have internet occurs. I go to settings and the wifi radio doesn’t see any networks available. That spot is empty. I turn it off and on, and nothing happens. I reboot and after a few minutes my wifi connects correctly again…I’m not excited about resetting and re-installing all my apps again. I’m beginning to wonder if there’s an app I have installed that’s causting this.

  135. folks , being a Dinosaur you have helped me multiple times ! Thanks. My question is, currently using the new Firecube what would the Mekool do better with its 4 gig of ram over my 2 ? I have very little buffering issues with the apps I use like weyd but do have issues occasionally when trying to fast forward or rewind . Thanks again.

  136. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

A device with 4GB of RAM generally offers better performance for multitasking and running resource-intensive applications. If you plan to use your Android TV box for gaming, streaming high-resolution content, or running multiple apps simultaneously, the 4GB RAM option may provide a smoother experience.

  137. Avatar for mthr1 mthr1 says:

The additional overhead of ram, from 2gb to 4gb, won’t improve the minor buffering issues that you’re having when rewind or forward is being used. You’re better off doing regular device reboots so that you can clear the memory cache in the memory controller. Different apps tend to manage memory usage differently and some tend to memory bleed more than others, taking up residual memory space even after the app is closed.

A device reboot generally flushes out the ram cache.

For your occasional buffering complaints, I’d keep a closer eye on your bandwidth speeds through your device, especially if you run behind a VPN.

As @Miki mentioned, for general streaming up to 4k, devices with 1-2gb ram is sufficient.

The elements of android box gaming, broadcasting, plex server, PIP or split screen modes with some services - will benefit from having 3-4gb of ram, particularly fast ram such as ddr4+.

In the end, the question of the value of moving from your fire cube to a device like the mecool…it depends how generally happy with the Amazon landscape and how your mostly used apps perform for you (sounds like you’re reasonably content). If you’re an Alexa fan - you can still repurpose the cube as a standalone Alexa device and stream with something different.

There’s budget considerations, of course. The mecool is $130+.

  138. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Ok so after having this happen to me several more times I’m about to email MeCool support to see what alternatives to wiping and starting over are available to me. This sucks. I had such high hopes for this machine and my experience with it has been pretty disappointing. Folks, the $20 Onn with a 15 dollar 64 gig Sandisk works 90% as well and costs 1/4 what this thing does. Save your money.

I promise I’ll update this post when and if MeCool gives me an acceptable path to fix this problem. Or issues a firmware update. Till then…

  139. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

wjschulz and RPL - I am in an email discussion with Ziyang Wu at Mecool about this wifi radio problem. Have you had any further problems with your boxes?

I can tell you - mine’s gotten worse all of a sudden. I am rebooting 3-4 times to get the wifi radio to connect to my SSID and this is happening more than once a day now. This is very sudden.

One thing that I’d like to know of both of you or others who might be having this problem - Do you have “analiti WiFi Analyzer” installed? Also have you modified your launchers? Are you (or anyone else having problems) using ATV Launcher?

  140. For anyone having issues with Netflix not displaying an image but audio still running. Through some trial and error, l found making a change in the “Advanced Sound Settings” to the “Recommended Option” fixed the problem. Using the “Passthrough Option” was the culprit.

  141. Hey Miki, I still have not received the update for the Mecool km3 plus. Maybe its me. It looks pretty straight forward to update. When I try updating I just get you have the latest version. I see you are getting snow. How much and how cold is it?

He essentially concurs that there’s a problem somewhere with the Plus Deluxe and offered to accept the unit for a 10% restocking fee!!! For a brand new unit!!! Not to mention the shipping back is around $70! He wanted me to reset it back to stock but I haven’t done that yet. It’s been such a pain in the ass all the way around. I’m able to hard wire it to my ethernet switch and it works flawlessly that way so I’ll just leave it at that and if and when I really need the wifi I’ll deal with it then. Caveat Emptor!

  152. Hi Miki
I own lots of KM3 boxes but there isn’t a KM 3 “Plus” version that’s what I was saying I think it was a typo by unknownjohn.

Hi Kim - I don’t use Kodi. Maybe some others could chime in and answer your question. Welcome to the site!

  160. Couple of things of note on this box, the main one being some UK apps don’t appear to be licenced for use on it (BBC iPlayer and ITVX both show errors). Its not a VPN issue as I’m in the UK.

Secondly, not yet convinced it can auto switch refresh rates. Plex on the Shield is flawless as is Streamio at matching the frame rate of content. I can’t yet get the box to play ball in this area.

Hopefully can be fw fixes but no Shield killer, yet!

Troy said he was going to do a follow up video on the mecool km2 plus deluxe. Anyone know if it is coming?

  162. Nah, the Onn box is the best Shield competition :laughing::laughing:

  163. On the MeCool does it allow you to pause and fast forward? I don’t have that on my MeCool remote.

  164. The mecool. is not able to pause or fast forward live TV

  165. Yes you can. Just because the remote doesn’t have those buttons you can still do those things. While video is playing push OK button on remote then use playback bar to move where you want to go.

  166. I ordered the McCool KM2 PLUS Deluxe on February 4, 2024, and still haven’t received it. My order number is mecool179632024. Can Troypoint help me out please?

  167. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

I don’t think Troy can. I suspect you will have to contact the supplier that you purchased from.

Expect slow shipping from China and remember the Chineese newyear just ended on feb 24th and nothing happns during that…so be patient.

  169. so suddenly I have a issue I am getting an error from play protect saying it would not let xcpe app load. this only happens on my km2 plus deluxe no issue on my shield pro anyone have any idea what it could be ?

  170. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Turn play protect off. I stopped using it a long time ago.

  171. Before I turn it off I would like to know what xcpe does any idea ?

  172. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

I recommend that you do a google search as this seems to be a hot topic across the net.
xcpe is an application from Mecool that records your activity.
As for the exact details and how to use ADB to stop this behaviour it seems to be very controversial.

  173. I did a search but not great results but it was sparse and all over the place I would ask Mecool but they have never answered me about questions with the box since I have had it. the box suddenly reboots itself every 3 hrs or so Mecool must have sent out an update recently or my box is just a problem.

  174. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Oh there are dozens of posts about this going back 10 months. I read through 10 threads and then gave up as I don’t have a KM2 anymore. I gave it away to a kid who couldn’t afford one.
Focus on Reddit for your search.

  175. I did try yahoo maybe that is my problem I will give google a try. thanks.

  176. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

I was contacted about the WiFi problem this week from Mecool tech support. Be looking for a software update for the Plus Deluxe soon, too.

  177. it has 13 GB storage

  178. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

8 gigs RAM, 32 gigs storage.

  179. Most of these boxes coming out of China seem to all one issue or another…

  180. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Where else do they come from?

  181. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Isn’t the ONN 4K made in china?

  182. Is not Chinese software…
Compare the UI of those sold here and those sold out of China…

  183. Avatar for Miki Miki says:

Oh that could be true, I was talking about the supplier and manufacturer. I’ll do some research on the OS and see what I can find. I doubt the product is Made in China then shipped to say the USA where the OS is then installed. It’s usually all done in one plant, but anything is possible.

I doubt the ONN is any different.

  184. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

I have several boxes here. A Google Chromecast 4k tv, Amazon Fire box, Roku Ultra, Roku TV, 2 Onns, and a Mecool KM2 Plus Deluxe, and they all preform almost identically. The Onns are slower due to the additional Sandisk USB storage I’ve put on them but, otherwise, I defy you to tell the difference in function or performance. I’ve had trouble with the Wifi in the Mecool unit so I bypassed that and just use the ethernet in it until Mecool figures out what the problem is and issues an update. There were issues with the Onn remotes early on that Walmart (?) fixed on theirs. So I’m not trying to be argumentative but I don’t see the differences you suggest. I’m willing to be educated though.

  185. You have to admit the UI in the US based streaming boxes are better than anything coming out of China…
That includes Nvidia Shield Tv, Chromecast tv, Amazon Fire TV box, Roku Ultra, Roku TV, ONN boxes, and Firesticks…

  186. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Some are made in Korea, some in Thailand, India, essentially anywhere cheap labor is available. I own all but the Shield and I’m sorry that your and my opinion differs, but every one of the boxes we’re talking about has idiosyncrasies unique to each of them and none of them stand out above the others. IMO of course! Besides, who keeps the original desktop environments on these anyway? I don’t and I hope those that have to live with them don’t either.

  187. I normally leave them alone except for the boxes coming directly out of China.
    Their UI is a joke…
    But to each their own…
Honestly, all you really need are 4 apks, Live TV, Sports, and Movie and TV series…

  188. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

When you add a new launcher over the UI it makes no difference which box you’re using other than speed.

  189. Avatar for m00se m00se says:

Those of us who have this box should be aware that Mecool tech support sent me the new firmware the other day and I installed it but hadn’t had time to play with it right away. This morning I unhooked the ethernet, and as of the moment I’m running on the WiFi and it seems to be working but! - I’ve only had it operational for a few hours. I’m going to give it a day or three before I have an idea of how it behaves and then I’ll email support and let them know. If I and others give the thumbs-up then they’ll push the new firmware out to everyone. Let’s hope for the best!!

  190. Troy with Amazon disabling programs on their firestick I think it’s time that Wendy have to move on. I’ve loved my firestick for man years and as a founding member loved all your reviews and videos. They have been a tremendous help. I’m wondering what your feelings or recommendations are for a replacement that won’t limit what programs we can use. I’m thinking if a direct replace t in some tvs and a better or upgrade device on my main entertainment room. Thoughts please,
