Discovery has announced its new streaming service, Discovery Plus, will officially launch on January 4, 2021.
Discovery is the latest company to join the trend of new independent streaming services.
The corporation revealed the announcement in a Press Release with an included note from Discovery Inc. CEO David Zaslav:
“We have been working methodically the past two years to bring all of our strategic advantages to the launch of discovery+, including distribution and advertising partnerships around the world, a world-class offering of quality brands, authentic personalities and the largest content library at launch, as well as a broad slate of exclusive programming…. We believe discovery+ is the perfect complement to every streaming portfolio, and we couldn’t be more excited to partner with Verizon to bring this incredible content to their customer base.”
It appears Discovery is taking a similar path as NBC and WarnerMedia did earlier this year with the launch of their new services.

Discovery Plus Details
The price for this subscription service is set at $4.99/month with the option to pay $6.99/month for an ad-free version.
Discovery has partnered with Verizon to enable select Verizon customers full access to the service for 12 months absolutely free.
This includes new and existing wireless customers with a Play More or Get More Unlimited Plan.
For those with a Start or Do More Unlimited plan, access to Discovery+ will be provided free for 6 months.

Verizon customers who sign up for Verizon 5G Home Internet or Fios Gigabit will also receive a free year of service.
We have seen this in the past with Verizon when it decided to add Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu to its Unlimited Plans.
Discovery Plus will include content from the following outlets and more:
- HGTV
- History
- A&E
- TLC
- Food Network
- Investigation Discovery
- OWN
- Animal Planet
- DIY Network
- BBC Planet Earth
- Sci
- Lifetime
Currently, no deals have been made with streaming platforms such as Fire TV or Roku. However, both parties are working on agreements.
The service hopes to reach 70 million subscribers just in the United States alone.
