Warner Bros recently announced that all of their scheduled 2021 movie releases are going to be available on HBO Max in addition to theaters.
This new movie distribution model is in response to the changing theater industry due to the ongoing pandemic.
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen a new movie directly released to consumers, as Disney Released Mulan directly to consumers earlier this year via Disney Plus.
The CEO and Chair of WarnerMedia Studios, Ann Sarnoff, stated the following on the situation:
“We’re living in unprecedented times which call for creative solutions, including this new initiative for Warner Bros. No one wants films back on the big screen more than we do. We know new content is the lifeblood of theatrical exhibition, but we have to balance this with the reality that most theaters in the U.S. will likely operate at reduced capacity throughout 2021.”
Warner Bros actually hinted at this trend a few weeks ago in a press release when they announced “Wonder Woman 1984” would be coming to theaters and HBO Max simultaneously on Christmas Day.
This is great news for HBO Max customers as these new movie releases in 2021 come at no additional cost to subscribers.
However, this news isn’t so good when it comes to movie theaters like AMC or Cinemark. This trend may be the nail in the coffin for the traditional theater business.
We’ve seen traditional theaters already struggling with the ongoing pandemic. Earlier this year AMC was promoting fifteen-cent tickets as a way to draw crowds.
