Beelink GT1 Review

Beelink GT1

This Beelink GT1 Review will provide you with important information that you need to know if you are in the market for an Android TV Box.

Upon unboxing the Beelink GT1, I was happy to see the small form factor and nice looking carbon fiber pattern on the outside of the box.  The design is small, sleek and looks nice sitting next to the television.  I really like these small designs as they are easy to transport and small on postage for those of you who sell or gift these devices on a regular basis.

The Beelink GT1 comes with an infrared remote control, hdmi cable, and power adapter.  The remote required three triple a batteries that aren’t included within the package.

The remote control provides all of the basic functions that you will need, including a mouse option which is mandatory for Android TV Boxes.  I still strongly suggest that users purchase the Rii i8+ BT Mini Wireless Bluetooth Backlight Touchpad Keyboard with Mouse to use with this device.  Using a mini wireless keyboard with any type of Android TV Box will make your life much easier.

This device packs a ton of power and comes equipped with the Amlogic S912 Octa Core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU, which delivers powerful performance that you will notice within all of your applications.  The unit includes 2GB of DDR3 RAM which helps with Kodi buffering and large computing tasks.  The Beelink GT1 also includes 16GB of onboard eMMC Flash Storage and the ability to add an additional 32GB through a micro sd card.  I also like the fact that this Android device comes equipped with Bluetooth 4.0, making it easy to pair speakers, game pads, keyboards, mouse, etc.

When first powering on the system to start my Beelink GT1 review, I was greeted with a nice looking launcher and not the boring generic one that we have been accustomed to.  This launcher provides easy navigation with the ability to easily add your favorite application shortcuts to the home screen.

The first application that I always launch when performing a review is Kodi.  The Beelink GT1 comes with the most recent version of Kodi and as of this writing, that is 16.1.  I am happy to see that many of the most popular Kodi addons are already installed, making this an easy setup process for beginners.  I usually perform a clean Kodi install with my favorite build regardless of how nice the pre-configured Kodi setup is, but again, this is perfect for beginner who don’t want to mess with anything.

Kodi played my 4K sample video very well without any lag or buffering.  I was also happy to see how well this device worked with the various Kodi live streaming addons.  I like sports so the live tv performance is important to me and this device worked well.

I also like the KodiMate Android application that comes loaded onto the Beelink GT1, which makes for easy installation of Kodi addons.  But, it doesn’t seem to have a wide variety of the best Kodi addons available.  You can think of this program as an app store that includes some of the most popular Kodi addons that you can install with the click of your remote.

Wireless download speed measured at 29.19 Mb/s while upload speed measured at 13.14 Mb/s.  When connected to the Lan port, download speed measured at 75.57 Mb/s and upload speed registered at 13.16 Mb/s.  I am happy with the download speeds for both wireless and LAN connections on this Beelink GT1 Android TV Box.

Beelink GT1 Review – What I Like & What I Don’t Like

Things I like about the Beelink GT1 Android TV Box

  • Strong Android TV Box with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage
  • Easy to use launcher that is very customizable
  • The most popular Kodi addons are already intalled, making this a breeze for beginners to use immediately
  • KodiMate is an Android application loaded onto the system that acts as a store for easy installation of popular Kodi Addons
  • Will play any type of video file and has no troubles with 4K material
  • Works perfect with Rii I8 Mini 2.4Ghz Wireless Touchpad Keyboard With Mouse

What I don’t like about the Beelink GT1 Anroid TV Box

  • As with all Android TV Boxes, I wish the manufacturers could figure out an alternative remote so we aren’t required to fork out additional money for a wireless mini keyboard
  • KodiMate addon installation applications doesn’t include a wide variety of the best addons
  • Provide remote friendly apps that are easy to use with a remote while sitting on the couch

Would I use the Beelink GT1 Android TV Box As A Primary Streaming Device Within My Home?

This is one of my favorite Android TV Boxes that I have reviewed to date due to its powerful specs along with low price tag.  After using the Beelink GT1 as my main streaming device for one week, I can honestly say that this powerhouse would work great for my viewing needs.

This sounds like an interesting option, I’m becoming a big fan of the Android TV boxes.
Currently I’ve got an Intel NUC (Celeron based) but it can’t handle 4K and sometimes struggles with large 1080 files, in the main room I have a purpose built HTPC (Intel i3 based with a discreet video card) and it handles everything including 4K and all HD sound formats. The downside to these is they are big and tend to be pretty pricey but there are no limitations so it kind of balances out. In the office I have an MXQ Pro Android TV box which is very good and affordable. Does most of what my dedicated HTPC does with a few limitations. All of these devices stream content from my media server or via Kodi plugins.
Great review as always, your stuff has opened up a whole new level of Kodi to me. Top stuff Troy!

Currently I just have an Amazon FireTV stick. I keep a watch out for up and coming boxes and read a lot of reviews. My dream box would be the Nvidia Shield, but currently with 2 small children, I can’t justify the expense. I do want something with ethernet next, as trying to watch PPV events kinda blows with the stick. No matter what I do, there is too much lag and buffering. I have also considered one of those fan less mini pc barebones boxes, so I could use much more memory and an mSata drive. I like the ones with dual gigabit ethernet ports. Ah, decisions, decisions…

  • Orlando Perez

  • Comeon man

    Roku, HTPC/vpn/kodi/playon,openflixr, firetv, WDlive

  • Jamie Bauer

Thanks for the review, looks cool!

  • Cheryl Frey

I have an Amazon Fire Stick and an Apple TV box. I love them both! Especially since watching Tony’s videos have helped me understand the ins and outs of Kodi much, much better!

  • kilroy

Troy , how does this unit compare to the A95X ? is this faster and your new box of choice or are they about the same…. ? thanks.

    • Hello, they are both very comparable. You can’t go wrong with either the Beelink GT1 or A95X.

  • Cathy Benedict

I currently use two Roku 3, two Fire TV boxes and two Android Nexbox A95X, with KODI installed on the later two, Love the mini-keyboard that Troy recommended for using the the Fire TV and the Android box. The remotes are insane to use for typing! I use PlayOn/PlayLater for recording, which works well.

Someday when I can work it into my schedule, I hope to get PLEX, setup in my spare time. I only signed up for a year with PLEX and that was last December. I should have sprung for the lifetime option, as the rate I am going, it is going to take me that long…

I am hoping to be able to do away with my cable TV bill and perhaps switch to PlayStation Vue for local programming, etc., in addition to Amazon Prime for which I have used now for multiple years with the Roku 3. My cable bill is $230., a month, which includes Internet and a landline, but doing away with the cable part will be a great savings.

I am in the process of learning how to navigate KODI, so I can then show my sister. Signed up for PIA VPN at Troy’s recommendation and finally got that setup through my ASUS RT-88U router, which was an experience in itself. Thank goodness for the Merlin Firmware for the ASUS or I would probably still be fumbling around trying to get it setup!

My only problem is my sister is hung up on watching Netflix and they block access with those using a VPN, so it is important that I can learn KODI and in turn be able to show her the access steps for using KODI and then be able to use the PIA VPN through the router for household access on the TVs.

Thanks, Troy, for all of your critiques, great articles and your membership tutorials. Good Luck to all for the drawing.

Fire stick fire tv google chrome and 2 web based servers for chrome casting to the tv via laptop. The fire tv box is by far the best so far. Love this kind of streaming and the paths it has opened up for developers and manufactures. One day a key chain dongle will contain all our media live.

  • Chip Falcone

2 fire boxes and 2 fire sticks. Fire box much more responsive than stick but still acceptable.

  • bob213pierce

I have a mini pc running win 10 dedicated to Kodi. (got a super price on it from a friend upgrading his HTPC) Solid state drive with 8gb ram and 125 gb storage. Definitely overkill for current system but I am slowly building my HTPC system. Love all your reviews and info. The beelink looks like it would be an easy solution for our second tv.

I loaded KODI on my iPhone 6s, without jailbreak, but KODI lasts about a week & will not re activate. The icon remains but that’s about it. Any recent updates or suggestions for apple devices & kodi? Guess since this isn’t working out, the best solution would be to be selected for the Beelink GT1 device giveaway & not worry about running into these kinds of issues….Heck Yeah! Will be waiting to be contacted…thanks for your support!

  • Michael Doyle

    Hey Troy
Good review, I’m hearing good things about this box and I mainly want it for watching rugby, The box I have now suffers with buffering when watching lately. The Live TV I’d like to watch (Sky Sports and BT Sports mainly) which aren’t available in NA, will this get the job done? Currently my box is

M8S Plus Android TV Box, guess my question is will i see an upgrade in quality viewing with the Beelink?

    • Hi Michael, always hard to answer this buffering question. Many times, it is the server that you are pulling the stream from that causes the problem and not your device.

    • Chris

I can point you in the right direction for quality iptv at very good price if ur feed up with free streams or the current poor service you have at the moment…

      • RickJames09

Hi Chris. Do you mind sharing me a very good paid IPTV?

        • Chris

Hi Rick happy to help but I what ever one you go for alway go for a 24 hour trail first or a one month package as some don’t offer trials before spending big on a 6 month deal….

There a lots of groups are on Facebook are everyone has there one fav but for the passed 6months QuickIPTV is the most stable and good price.

Anyone reading just my opinion plz feel free to offer yours….

  • Shotgun Blues

Hey Troy, would you recommend the Beelink GT1 or the A95x (2gb, 16ram) strictly for kodi streaming Currently have an MXQ box and am looking to upgrade. What box do you think would be optimal for minimizing lag?

  • James Chute

Hey troy I bought a keyboard and mouse for my beelink box but only the keyboard works. Any idea what I can do to fix it cause the remote mouse is terrible.

  • Chris

Can you talk about the OS. Specifically, is it stock Android, or Android TV. I understand that Android TV is a better ‘living room’ experience, but that stock Android can load more apps. Further, that many box sellers use the term ‘Android TV box’, but it may just be a tweaked stock Android. This is very misleading. I don’t want to have to dig out a mouse or keyboard.
