Roku is Ending All Private Channels in 2022 – What Happened?

roku ending private channels

It was recently announced that Roku is ending private channels in 2022.

Private channels are non-certified channels that function on Roku’s hardware but aren’t officially supported in the Roku Channel Store.

These non-certified (private) Roku channels were once popular among Roku users wanting to access content that couldn’t be found in Roku’s official Channel Store.

These private channels were not reviewed by Roku’s team for technical requirements or compliance and often appealed to niche audiences.

Roku Ending Private Channels – What Happened?

According to an official press release from Roku, the company states the following regarding private channels.

With the release of the IDK and beta channels, Roku will remove non-certified channels from the platform by March 2022.”

Back in October of 2021, Roku announced the launch of an Independent Developer Kit (IDK), which will “enable developers to explore the platform’s capabilities and personalize their Roku experience.”

With the launch of their new IDK, Roku then decided to terminate non-certified (private) channels from their platform entirely.

With the launch of their new IDK, Roku then decided to terminate non-certified (private) channels from their platform entirely.

Roku then followed up with another press release in November 2021 explaining their plan for removing private channels on February 23, 2022.

“Roku is sunsetting non-certified channels. Specifically, on February 23rd, 2022, all non-certified channels will be disabled across all Roku devices. Roku is sunsetting non-certified channels to better align with industry standards on their developer QA testing of channels, and limiting distribution of channels to a small set of users.

With Roku private channels completely going away in a few days, this leaves many users frustrated and looking for alternative options.

We want to know your thoughts on Roku’s decision to end private channels. Have you used private channels in the past?

Roku Alternatives

TROYPOINT has never recommended Roku devices for various reasons outlined in our Roku vs Firestick comparison.

Most importantly, Roku has a closed operating system (OS) which means it is impossible to jailbreak the device for 3rd party applications.

And with private channels coming to an end, there’s never been a better time to look for a different streaming device.

We recommend the Amazon Firestick 4K due to its low price point and jailbreaking abilities.

  1. I am trying to instead iptv on my roku but instead of the smarters, whenever the file is downloaded, it automatically does it for the smarters pro. The credentials that I have only work with iptv smarters not iptv smarters pro. How do I install iptv smaters?
    Thanks.

  2. Seriously?? Just now, when I finally got one? Roku was the only living room device you could get R18 on, they specifically supported it using private channels, so I’d been thinking about getting one for years. Otherwise, besides an all-region blu-ray player, game consoles are all you need, but they don’t allow adult content at all. Japan requires DRM, so you have to login to your account, of course. I just made a Roku account and verified that the channel exists, and before I get the hardware they take it down! That was the ONLY reason to get one of these things, otherwise it’s completely redundant. Now it’s PCs only? Well guess what, PCs may be irreplaceable, but they’re also just dead hulks sitting there. Bastards?

  3. Very Disappointed ?. I ABSOLUTELY loved all my private channels and so did my kids!! Private/hidden apps made it so much fun because you always found something fun, different, weird and so on!! My kids absolutely loved the Rollercoaster Channel because it made them feel like they were riding on one. Best part about private apps for me was the excitement of feeling like we’re opening a present whether good or bad!! Not sure what I’m going to do now because my family has had roku for almost 13 years and had defended it oh so many times!! So many ppl tried to get me to switch to firestick before and after I learned about jailbreaking it! My mom who swear by firestick offered to by me one! Now I’m not sure if I should have or not!!!

  4. I have both Roku and FireTV on 4 TVs and never use the Roku anymore. If they really wanted to increase sales they are going in the wrong direction!

  5. This makes my TCL Smart TV something that I would not have purchased. Now I will be required to use the Roku to access a Firestick. The TV is no longer Smart.

  6. Rather be killing communists

A few years ago after cutting the cord, I bought 2 roku sticks. I used to enjoy a private channel they had until they shut it down. I then went to fire stick and never used roku since.Firestick rules. I never support hollyweird or purchase channels or dvds and never will. I will go back to reading books if they ever abolish jailbreaking.

  7. I love Roku, lots of old movies and lots of channels to choose from it’s getting harder and harder to access movies on fire stick. When you access, the movies that are represented are something else, so annoying.

  8. Roku was the first device I purchased and dropped immediately upon discovering Fire Stick ! Comparing the two ; hand’s down the Fire Stick is the Best !
