The once-popular live TV service Universe IPTV has to pay DISH Network over $7 million in damages for copyright infringement.
As first reported by TorrentFreak, DISH Network first filed a copyright lawsuit against the unverified live TV service “Universe IPTV” in August 2020.
After suing the Nitro IPTV service a few months ago for copyright damages, DISH Network is back again collecting damages from another pirate IPTV provider.
According to DISH in the original lawsuit, Universe IPTV was not authorized to distribute channels and other protected works.
One of the statements within DISH’s original complaint reads the following:
“Defendants distribute, sell, and promote Universe Subscriptions to consumers and to resellers, including Universeonlinetv.co; Universeiptv.stream; Universeiptvs.com; Iptvuniverse.net; and Universe2iptv.com, with knowledge that these and other resellers distribute, sell, and promote Universe Subscriptions to Service Users.”

Prior to filing any lawsuits DISH sent several cease and desist letters, but was unsuccessful as Universe IPTV just transferred to new locations and hosting providers.
According to reports, there were five “doe” defendants accused of direct and contributory copyright infringement.
The defendants are said to be located in Germany, Egypt, and United Arab Emirates.

After failed attempts using the appropriate legal measures in each of those countries, DISH sought the help of third parties which ended up being successful in pursuing the operators.
The United States District court deemed this acceptable to pursue DISH’s claim for judgment against the defendants.
The official judgment from United States District Judge Sim Lake reads the following:
“Defendants are contributorily liable for copyright infringement because they served as the intermediary between third parties who directly infringe DISH’s exclusive distribution and public performance rights and users of the Universe Service.”
Therefore, the defendants were found liable for inducing and materially contributing to copyright infringement.
Overall, it will be interesting to see what happens with this Universe IPTV case and if more lawsuits are on the way from DISH Network.
