The TiVo Stream 4K just received a surprise OS update from Android 10 to Android 12. For a nearly six-year-old device, that would seem like good news.

Instead, owners are finding that the update forcibly removes apps like Downloader, Projectivy Launcher, and ADB utilities.
How to Bypass TiVo Stream 4K Update & Unblock Apps
I put together a video that walks through the entire TiVo Stream 4K update fix from start to finish. Watch it below or scroll down for the written guide with screenshots.

Tivo Stream 4K Update Details
Reports on this Tivo Stream 4K update have been flooding in across YouTube, Reddit and other forums. After the Android 12 update, the device is automatically uninstalling third-party applications.
Downloader gets removed the moment you install it from Google Play. Custom launchers like Projectivy and ADB tools are being wiped as well.

One Tivo Stream user posted a short video on this Reddit thread showing what happens when trying to install Downloader from Google Play.

Another Reddit thread on Projectivy Launcher highlighted the issues with this new Tivo Stream update.

Three companies share ties to this device. TiVo originally released it, SEI Robotics manufactures it, and Channel Master is now the sole seller. No one has taken responsibility, but the goal appears obvious: force users into the default launcher and block customization.
Community members traced the issue to a hidden system app called CoreService that monitors new installs and removes anything it flags.

5. Toggle on USB debugging.

6. Click the back button on your remote, click About, click Status and make note of your IP address. You will need this for future steps.

7. Next install the atvTools app on your Android or iOS device. Make sure this device is connected to the same network as your TiVo Stream 4K!

8. Launch the atvTools app on your Android or iOS device. We are using an Android tablet in this instance. Click the TiVo Stream 4K option.

9. Wait a few seconds while it’s connecting.

10. At the top of the screen you’ll see our TiVo Stream 4K has been connected.

11. Next open a browser on your Android or iOS device and visit the TROYPOINT Toolbox by typing in troypoint.com/db.

12. Then scroll down and find the section for Copy/Paste Scripts. You will notice the ‘TiVo Stream 4K Unblock Apps’ right underneath.

13. Now copy the ADB shell command on your clipboard.

14. Next go back into the atvTools app and click Shell on bottom.

15. Then paste that ADB shell command from the previous step and click Done.

16. Wait a few seconds and you’ll notice a message saying the user has been disabled.

17. Now go back to your TiVo Stream 4K and try installing the Downloader App from the Google Play Store again. This time it worked properly since I have the ‘Open’ button.

18. Now to make sure this is working, launch Downloader and try side-loading apps from the TROYPOINT Toolbox.

Important Note: Some users have reported that a device reboot can reverse this fix. If your apps disappear again after restarting, run through the process a second time. Several people found it took two attempts before the change held permanently.
Time to Consider a Better Streaming Device
If you’re tired of fighting your hardware just to install apps, it may be time to move on. The Onn 4K boxes (Plus and Pro) are a great pick for Google TV/Android TV boxes.
The Plus model costs around $30, runs the latest Android software, and delivers far better performance than the aging TiVo.
Neither blocks you from side-loading or customizing your setup. For a full breakdown, check out our recommended streaming devices guide.
Final Thoughts from Troy
An aging streaming device receiving an OS update should be a positive event. Instead, sideloading tools and user customization options were stripped away without warning.
The ATV Tools method gives most owners a quick path back to a working setup without needing a computer. Affordable Onn streaming boxes from Walmart offer better performance at similar prices without these restrictions.
