Walmart Onn Streaming Boxes Sell Out as Many Ditch Fire TV

Walmart can’t keep its Onn streaming boxes on the shelves right now, and the reason shouldn’t surprise anyone who follows TROYPOINT.

All three of Walmart’s 4K Onn models, the 4K Streaming Box, the 4K Plus, and the 4K Pro, are currently listed as out of stock for online orders.

Local delivery options are showing the same unavailability across multiple regions. While inventory swings happen from time to time, having every single 4K model unavailable at once is extremely rare.

Why Are Onn Streaming Boxes Sold Out?

Two major factors seem to be driving these shortages. The first is massive demand from former Fire TV owners jumping ship to Google TV/Android TV devices.

Discussions across Reddit and other streaming forums point to frustrated Fire TV users making the switch due to Amazon’s crackdown on third-party apps.

The second factor involves new hardware on the horizon. There’s growing speculation that Walmart is preparing to release a successor to the Onn 4K Pro.

Before selling out completely, the 4K Pro had been running heavy discounts for an extended period, which is a pattern Walmart has followed in the past when clearing inventory ahead of a product refresh. There have been reports of a new Google TV device soon, noting that stock levels dropped steadily before disappearing entirely.

The older 4K Streaming Box launched in 2023, and the 4K Pro arrived in mid-2024, making both prime candidates for an upgrade. However, the Onn 4K Plus hit stores less than a year ago and is also sold out, which suggests demand is just as responsible as any product transition.

Amazon’s Fire TV Crackdown is Pushing Users Away

Amazon has been aggressively blocking third-party apps (APKs) on Fire TV devices that it claims provide access to unlicensed content. The company started by disabling app functionality and has since moved to preventing certain apps from being installed at all.

Even users who never touched a third-party app are fed up. Many Fire TV owners have grown tired of Amazon’s heavy-handed approach, pointing to a long history of blocking useful apps that have nothing to do with copyright issues.

The release of the Fire TV Stick 4K Select running Vega OS made things worse. This new operating system doesn’t allow any side-loaded apps whatsoever. Amazon has also refused to commit to releasing new Android-based Fire TV Sticks, which has left many loyal customers feeling abandoned.
