Pirate Streaming Kingpin Caught Running $2M IPTV Operation

Authorities have arrested the man accused of running one of Canada’s biggest pirate IPTV operations.

Canadian authorities have arrested Éric Grenier, the alleged operator behind IPTV providers like Arubox TV and Stocker IPTV, more than a year after he avoided capture. The 52-year-old was taken into custody this week after flying from Aruba to Montreal.

Quebec’s provincial police escorted Grenier to a station in Shawinigan. His arrest stems from a February 2024 investigation targeting a large IPTV operation accused of illegally distributing live TV channels from major telecoms.

Grenier is facing ten charges including fraud, theft, conspiracy, money laundering, and production and sale of devices used for illegal signal access. The charges span alleged offenses from June 2020 to February 2024.

Authorities Say IPTV Service Reached Thousands

Grenier’s IPTV services reportedly gave users access to over 3,500 pirated channels for about CAD$25/month.

Arubox TV and Stocker IPTV are said to have served at least 7,000 customers in Quebec alone, generating estimated profits of CAD$2 million annually.

Police claim Grenier openly operated these services and sold preloaded Android-based IPTV boxes.

Devices like Formuler boxes, while legal by themselves, were allegedly configured with illegal streaming software before being distributed.

Seven Others Face Charges in Same Case

Grenier’s operation wasn’t a solo act. Authorities have charged seven others connected to the IPTV business:

• Marie-Ève Poliquin Karaguioules
• Éric Laforge
• Daniel Perreault-Marcotte
• Patrick Cyr
• Christian Sabourin

• Sarah-Maude Grenier

Most co-defendants have already appeared in court and requested jury trials. Prosecutors are pushing for Grenier to be tried by jury as well. He remains in custody until his next court date.

Are Users at Risk for Legal Trouble?

While police say current charges focus on those running the operation, they’ve issued a warning to customers. Possessing or using a pirate-configured set-top box may still be illegal.
