Amazon Targets Pirate Streaming Apps Over Prime Video Content

Amazon is reinforcing its fight against unauthorized streaming apps that provide access to Prime Video content.

The company recently escalated its anti-piracy efforts by filing multiple DMCA takedown requests with GitHub, aimed at removing APKs linked to popular apps such as PikaShow, Castle, and FlixFox.

DMCA Requests Target Popular Streaming Apps

This week, anti-piracy firm MarkScan filed three distinct takedown requests with GitHub on behalf of Amazon Seller Services Pvt Ltd, a move somewhat surprising given that this division is typically associated with Amazon’s retail operations, not its streaming services.

These takedown notices were focused on removing APK files associated with the streaming apps mentioned.

PikaShow, one of the most prominent targets, has seen millions of downloads and even sponsored the Afghan cricket team in 2022.

However, it’s uncertain if the files hosted on GitHub were directly linked to the original PikaShow app. The brand name has been widely appropriated by various unrelated apps looking to leverage its popularity.

GitHub Complies, But Issues Persist

GitHub acted swiftly in response to Amazon’s requests, pulling down the APK files. Attempts to access these repositories now result in “repository unavailable” messages or 404 errors.

This takedown, however, only represents a small slice of a larger issue. In the first half of this year alone, GitHub processed more than a thousand DMCA takedown notices, affecting over 18,000 projects.

Yet, given that GitHub hosts more than 500 million open-source projects, these takedowns constitute only a minor fraction.

Broader Implications and Repeated Offenders

The takedown notices from Amazon join a long list of similar actions from various rights holders this year. GitHub has been compelled to remove a range of APKs flagged by media companies.

Notable examples include Hotstar’s targeting of HD Streamz and RTS TV, Paramount’s action against a Pluto TV player, and Sony’s focus on Multimovies and Ask4movie apps.

Despite the takedown efforts, app piracy remains persistent. Sky Italia, for instance, flagged several versions of the Ola TV app earlier this week.

While GitHub has complied by removing these APKs, these apps still surface on search engines, highlighting the difficulties in eradicating the issue fully.

Users Beware: Hidden Costs of Free Content

It’s essential to highlight that many of these unauthorized streaming apps are knockoffs, developed to profit at the user’s expense.

While movies and TV series may be free to access, the cost often comes in other forms beyond advertisements, potentially exposing users to security risks.
