YouTube is at it yet again! The tech media giant is continuing with their crackdown on ad-blockers by slowing down the website and causing lag/buffering whenever users have one enabled.
The world’s most popular video-sharing platform has been taking strong measures to combat the use of ad-blockers by its users. In 2023, the platform experimented with blocking these ad-blocker tools altogether.
However, recent reports suggest that the latest efforts have resulted in slowdowns for individuals who have an ad-blocker turned on when visiting the site.
Google, the parent company of YouTube, has been testing various tactics to discourage the use of ad-blockers, including onscreen pop-up messages and implementing a three-strikes policy. However, these measures have caused users to experience slower loading times, difficulty accessing certain features, and longer video buffering times.
This slowdown is specifically targeted towards individuals who have ad-blockers enabled. For them, features like fullscreen and theater mode become inaccessible, and videos take longer to load and buffer.
Users facing these slowdowns have limited options available. They can either disable their ad-blocker or subscribe to YouTube Premium which will eliminate ads entirely. Or, as TROYPOINT recommends, find an ad-free YouTube alternative such as ReVanced or SmartTube which provide all of the same benefits and have no ads whatsoever.

As YouTube continues its crackdown on ad-blockers, it remains to be seen how these measures will impact the overall user experience and whether users resort to YouTube Premium subscriptions to avoid the slowdowns.
Ad-blocking has long been used as a method to avoid ads on YouTube, but the platform considers it a violation of its terms of service. To discourage the use of ad blockers, YouTube displays a pop-up message informing users of the violation and prompting them to turn off their ad blocker.

In addition, YouTube has started slowing down the entire site for users with ad blockers, referring to it as “suboptimal viewing.” This tactic is implemented through an artificial timeout in the YouTube code, mimicking a slow internet connection. Users on a popular Reddit Thread have reported laggy and unresponsive experiences, only to find that disabling the ad blocker resolves these issues.
“I couldn’t understand why YouTube was suddenly so slow. It wasn’t until I disabled my ad blocker that everything started working smoothly again.” – YouTube user
As you would guess, most users are not happy with the latest crackdown which slows video playback on the platform.
YouTube’s Motivation for Ad Blocker Crackdown
Google relies heavily on advertising for its financial success. In 2022, it reported a staggering $224.47 billion in ad revenue out of a total revenue of $279.8 billion. These figures highlight just how crucial ads are to YouTube’s operations and profitability.
Given the significant role that ad revenue plays in Google’s overall earnings, it comes as no surprise that the company is taking steps to protect this vital income stream. One tactic employed by Google to combat ad-blockers is the crackdown on these software tools.
These intentional measures, such as longer video buffering times and limited access to certain features, are likely aimed at encouraging users to either disable their ad blockers or consider subscribing to YouTube Premium. While the specific intent behind these measures remains anecdotal, they align with Google’s financial interests and the importance of preserving its advertising revenue stream.
It is unlikely that YouTube will pull back on its crackdowns for ad-blockers and more. In all likelihood, these measures will continue in the future leaving many users looking for an alternative.
