The English Premier League is the most popular football (soccer) league in the world today with billions of viewers from across the globe.

In the official Premier League submission to the European Commission, the document states the following:

“A high proportion of the revenue generated by the Premier League derives from the sale of audio-visual
broadcasting rights to the Matches. The scale and nature of IP infringement, particularly through online piracy,
continues to place this revenue at significant risk.

This in turn threatens the Premier League’s ability to continue investing in, and contributing to, the quality of the Competition, the sport more generally, community projects and the wider global economy.”

The report goes on and also claims that during the 2021/22 season, the Premier League detected over 250,000 infringing live online streams and over 300,000 unauthorized recorded clips.

Premier League Submission – Types of Piracy

The Premier League’s submission report goes on to explain the different types of piracy that are infringing their content.

These two distinctions of piracy are “Open Web Piracy” and “Closed Network Piracy.”

Open Web Piracy

The Premier League describes Open Web Piracy as “freely accessible content available on the web without users having to pay anything.” This mainly refers to free streaming websites.

They even created a diagram that further explains how Open Web Piracy works:

Closed Network Piracy

Closed Network Piracy on the other hand is described as “content only available to those who pay for access.” This refers to premium IPTV services.

Below is a diagram explaining how Closed Network Piracy works:

Will Users of These IPTV Services & Pirate Sites be Contacted by Authorities?

It’s uncertain what’s happening behind the scenes with the Premier League and others targeting more pirate websites and services globally.

We’ve seen website operators in the past hand over user data, streaming history, and identifying IP addresses.  They’re also known to sell this sought-after information to other third parties.

It’s extremely important to only stream content not protected by copyright and protect yourself with a VPN.
