National Public Data Returns After 2.9 Billion SSN Breach

National Public Data has returned to the internet after one of history’s largest data breaches.

The platform went dark in April 2024 following a massive security incident that exposed up to 2.9 billion records containing names, addresses, Social Security numbers, and family information.

Jerico Pictures, the original operator, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after the breach. Now Perfect Privacy LLC, a Florida company, has taken control and restored the same services that caused the initial privacy disaster.

Same Problems, New Owner

The revived website still contains the leaked information that made headlines months ago. Users can search through the same compromised data as before, raising serious questions about accountability in the data broker industry.

Cybersecurity experts called the situation a “privacy nightmare.” Even basic details like relatives and neighbors give cybercriminals enough information to create convincing phishing schemes.

The Hackers Behind the Breach

Two hackers played key roles in this incident. “Fenice” initially claimed responsibility, while “US DoD” acted as a middleman before eventually leaking the data for free. Brazilian authorities later arrested the US DoD hacker, but the damage was already done.

Multiple lawsuits followed, including Hofmann v. Jerico Pictures, filed in August 2024. The case seeks damages and court-ordered security reforms including third-party audits and stronger encryption protocols.

Protection Steps You Can Take

The website now offers an opt-out form for profile removal, though experts warn that leaked data continues circulating among criminal groups. Anyone finding their information should request removal immediately.

Final Thoughts

National Public Data’s return highlights the weak oversight surrounding data brokers. While the company changed hands, the fundamental privacy risks remain unchanged.

This incident demonstrates how easily sensitive information can be exploited and why stricter regulations are needed for companies handling personal data.
