Malware from Pirate Websites Infects Nearly One Million Devices

Microsoft Threat Intelligence has identified a large-scale malware campaign linked to pirate streaming sites that has infected nearly one million devices.

Cybercriminals used malvertising (malicious ads) to redirect users through multiple layers of infected URLs. The goal was to steal personal data, with almost one million devices compromised in December 2024.

How the Malware Attack Worked

Pirate streaming sites were used to trick users into clicking malicious links, leading them through several redirects. Each layer helped attackers generate revenue while exposing users to malware.

Multi-Stage Infection Process

1. Initial Redirects – Users were sent through multiple URLs, eventually landing on a site that delivered malware.
2. First-Stage Payload – The malware, often hosted on GitHub, Discord, or Dropbox, was disguised with digital certificates to bypass security.
3. Second-Stage Discovery – Attackers collected system details (memory, OS, screen resolution) and sent the data to a remote server.
4. Third- and Fourth-Stage Payloads – Additional malware was installed to ensure persistence, steal data, and monitor browsing activity.

Stolen Data and Persistence Techniques

• Attackers used Lumma Stealer and Doenerium Trojan to steal browser credentials and user data.
• Scripts exploited built-in Windows tools like PowerShell.exe and MSBuild.exe to avoid detection.
• AutoIT and JavaScript files were placed in the Startup folder to ensure malware ran every time the user logged in.

Why Pirate Sites Are a Growing Threat

Pirate streaming sites have been under financial pressure due to advertiser boycotts. In response, many turned to low-quality ad networks, creating an environment where malvertising and scams thrive.

As a result, once relatively safe sites have become prime targets for cybercriminals, leading to widespread infections like the one Microsoft uncovered.
