Netflix Making Big Changes Including the End of Password Sharing

netflix big changes

Netflix has announced some big changes for the rest of this year and the beginning of 2023 after its latest quarterly earnings call.

The company will officially launch a new subscription tier in November that will cost users a discounted price.

The catch, however, is that this new option will include advertisements which is something we have not yet seen from Netflix.

The all-new subscription package will be available on November 3rd and will cost $6.99/month which is over 50% off their Standard package.

Netflix is calling this the “Basic with Ads” Plan and is set to be available in 12 countries including the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, Italy, Japan, and more.

It’s important to note that this new package does have various limitations including:

  • 4-5 minutes of ads per hour
  • 720p Video Resolution
  • Various Content Restrictions
  • No Downloading capabilities

The hope from Netflix is to add subscribers who do not want to pay full price but still wish to stream from their massive library of content.

What do you think of Netflix’s new ad-supported tier? Will you be purchasing the discounted subscription package?

netflix account sharing

Continuing Netflix’s latest announcement is a major bulletin from the media company that is sure to cause headaches among users.

The service sent a letter to shareholders noting a new approach to eliminate password sharing for subscribers.

Netflix has teased this in the past and has even tested this in Latin America with account owners having the ability to add “subaccounts”.

The company announced a new Profile Transfer Feature that will allow account borrowers the ability to create their own profiles.

In the notice to shareholders, Netflix made the following statement regarding these upcoming changes:

We’ve landed on a thoughtful approach to monetize account sharing and we’ll begin rolling this out more broadly starting in early 2023…

After listening to consumer feedback, we are going to offer the ability for borrowers to transfer their Netflix profile into their own account, and for sharers to manage their devices more easily and to create subaccounts (“extra member”), if they want to pay for family or friends.

It is unclear what charges subaccount users will have but it is likely to be within the $3-4/month range which is relatively close to the “Basic with Ads” package.

The crackdown on password sharing comes after the service saw a drastic decline in subscribers in Q1 of 2022.

It will be interesting to see what other adjustments may come from Netflix and major streaming providers in the future.

In the meantime, however, Netflix account owners and users have big changes coming that are sure to cause a stir in the community.

  1. I think Netflix should let you use your password sharing I mean you were paying for a prescription what does it matter if you use it on a bunch of different devices or different places you paid for the prescription so I think it’s a bunch of crap

  2. Maybe if Netflix offerred more of a variety and uptodate content then more peoplewould subscribe and not piggy back from family members.??? Whatcha think. There is too much current free stuff out there without paying for a subscription to watch outdated content. I
MJS. Currently do not subscribe or piggyback and there are myriads of avenues for upto date content.

  3. I feel for the price you pay per month, sharing your password with family is a small price for Netflix. Charging for the privilege is just greedy. I for one will stop subscribing to Netflix. Think of customers not just shareholders.

  4. Discounted price for ads? Okay if you choose that option (basically the same as the ads versus ad free options on Hulu), but also limiting selections and video quality is greed!

  5. This company has very POOR marketing. I think it’s time to drop them. Too many free movies with ads that we will watch

  6. Shouldn’t all the money you are paying them make up for ads? MLB started ads this past year and it is annoying as heck, especially when I am paying so much.

  7. I can’t say I’m surprised at Netflix cancelling password sharing in attempt to increase profits but I am disappointed. I was pleased to be able to offer Netflix to relatives who I knew couldn’t afford it but sadly this changed earlier this year in the UK. As for Netflix with Ads – not a chance! It may suit some but If I want to watch a film or TV series I want high quality visuals and absulutely no interuption for ads. If I get to the point with the increasing cost of living that I have to cut costs then Goodbye Netflix.

  8. No doubt Netflix will monitor the users account through their IP address but what if you are using a VPN? Your IP address is constantly changing. I am awaiting to read the finer detail on how this new approach by Netflix is going to work and how it will deal with users using a VPN to access their service.

  9. Frankly, I’m surprised that they haven’t cracked down on sharing an account until this point. But the real reason I was sticking with them was their original content, which has really gone down the tubes for the most part. Everything else, including original content, you can get by other means — it’s just a little more hassle. And the download feature is going away — that was a nice no hassle way of downloading movies for (plane) trips. And stuck with 720p …Whaaaat? Asta la vista baby?

  10. Netflix sucks and I barely watch it as it is. I have four rooms with televisions in my house and if I can’t watch it where I want to I’ll drop my subscription. Let all the snowflakes pay their bills. See how that works for them !

  11. If I am paying for 4 streams it should not matter who is watching or where they are. Netflix is charging me for this and I am paying so why are they charging additional when someone shares a password?

  12. I do not want ads and will stop paying for family on my account and they will not join on their own.Netflix is getting very liberal and woke with programming wilth lots of fluff shows. I will cancel and use kodi for the Netflix shows that are good to watch thru the fire stick. Thanks for all Troy.

  13. I pay for premium for best quality stream, I use only one device, I hardly ever download… They should have a basic package that includes 4K & HDR without multiple devices or download facilities. I can see myself moving away from Netflix as most of their content is available free on other sites…

  14. I’m sure some corporate greed is to blame but if they don’t make money for shareholders, they move their money elsewhere and Netflix goes down the drain. Why isn’t anyone talking about Hollywood greed? Way to many involved in making the content are over paid and by a lot! Cut that expense in half and everything we watch will follow.

  15. Hi Troy thanks for the Netflix update I think to begin with if their initial package was not priced so high they would have garnered more subscribers, but for sure having ads is not going to cut it as I for one absolutely detest the stop/ start annoyance. I think allowing sub- subscribers especially family members is a good thing at that price point as long as they are receiving the same content without ads and I think they may get more people interested. Thanks again for your updates

  16. Was a Netflix user. They increased price, but here in UK their selection not as good as USA. Seems they wish to loose a lot more customers.

  17. Netflix must think they are the only available service and that’s why they don’t have new customers.
With all the competition out there they should be looking for ways to bring in new customers not drive them away with ads and higher prices.
As far as sharing goes it was one of the perks of being a Netflix customer, and now they are going to take that away. What are they giving in return.
They will lose even more customers.

  18. So let me get this right. They make money off the subscriber, and off the subsribers back, make thousands in advertising.I’ve never had Netflix and never will.

  19. Always, corporate greed, they’ll never be satisfied. I’m definitely going to drop them, if I can’t share it with my Family,I’m barely watching it anyway.

    1. They were great in the beginning, when their prices where cheap compare to paying for cable. But now they’re getting to greedy for their shareholders. I’ll be done with them. There are plenty of options for all of Netflix’s content that you can get free.

    2. I totally agree. If I can’t share I will drop Netflix. I don’t want advertisements and I don’t want to pay extra to not see the ads.

  20. I DONT MIND THE ADVERTS,BUT I AM DISAPPOINTED IN THE AMOUNT OF QUALITY FILMS AVAILABLE TO ME HERE IN SPAIN, CAN THIS BE ADDRESSED.

  21. I don’t like ads, so if they don’t provide a plan with no ads, I will not get a Netflix account. I have Amazon Prime and I don’t watch it too much due to ads. I guess money has to be made, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.

    1. What ads do you see on Prime? I never see any whilst watching their content. Are you sure you’re not talking about Freevee and/or Tubi or the like???

  22. Pure GREED. Most of the media is so old anyway, haven’t been using Netflix much, so bye bye, I’ll donate a bit more to others. I won’t be threatened by scum tactics. I signed up for a service that they are not going honor. Netflix Terrorism.

  23. well, I guess that’s Netflix down the tube. can watch plenty of apps that are free.
must say I enjoyed Netflix over the years but this new setup is not what people want
ok, stop sharing but all the rest is you making money from ads.
you might think this is the way forward Netflix but not me.
    goodbye and farewell.

    1. If I wanted to pay for ads, I’d just watch cable. They have gotten just to greedy. Even Amazon prime is getting greedy. I guess the CEO’s need better private jets!

    2. I was with Netflix due to the fact of no commercials adds, streaming with adds makes me say goodbye. The way they used the sharing does not justice their gree, since the was the deal with a subscription in the first place. Cable was add free but now they forced them and realistic free streaming apps and TV local channels is best when you’re ready for the back to the basics. Does anyone mind content and limitations and still have to pay for their rules. Greedy is always around the corner. Thanks again

  24. I pay for four devices on Netflix now. I will not have Netflix with adds. Thank Troy for all you do for us… have a very blessed day.

  25. I canceled netflix cause of thier price and now they want to add..ads..the worst thing they could do…they said like 4 to 5 minutes…for ads..I will never rejoin there site…

    1. That will be another plan besides the regular non-ad service. But it will sucks because the catalogue will not include a lot of series and movies, i doubt people will be entice by this to get the service.

  26. Why would I sign up for ads, when that is the reason Firestick is so popular. Netflix continually until they lost me as a customer.

  27. Maybe Netflix should stop putting out garbage content and quit trying to be “woke”. Perhaps then they wouldn’t lose so many subscribers.

  28. Netflixs my eye caught in a net of fools is more like this approach. I prefer getting my entertainment for the price of my broadband package. With no extras. So until the seekers of dream packages drop their over inflated prices. I will be a Pirate, and a P.I.R.A.te believer and pay them nothing for my almost 1080p streemable extravaganza. Except my broadband and utilities bills.

  29. Hey Troy I don’t know how to reach out and ask you a question I downloaded your fork for Cody 19.0 but now they have 19.4 all the add-ons and the real the bridge and the settings how do I update the fork from 19.0 to 19 .4 would keep my data transfer that over I have no idea I tried downloading the 19.4 in troypoint app it just gave me a blank kodi19.4 it would be real helpful if you get back to me at this email address. Sorry about some of the misspelling and words don’t come out as I see them cuz now they’re coming out with a kodi twenty how am I going to transfer everything off I just don’t want to go through all that again thanks for your help Troy thanks

  30. I think they should charge for other people to use the service. If you are paying only one subscription price and others aren’t paying then the company is losing those subscription dues and it cost them to load the content and stream it. If you want Netflix pay for Netflix. Otherwise, you obviously don’t need it that bad if you can’t pay for it yourself and need to piggy back off someone else’s plan.
