Why Metadata Matters
Encryption keeps messages unreadable to unauthorized parties, but metadata still reveals details like sender identity, message timestamps, and file sizes. While E2E encryption protects content, the lingering visibility of metadata poses privacy concerns.
Surfshark’s Lead System Engineer, Karolis Kaciulis, believes current encryption methods haven’t evolved enough. He argues that despite strong content protection, metadata exposure still allows VPN providers—and potentially governments—to gather significant user data.

How Surfshark’s Patent Works
Surfshark’s new approach introduces a distributed trust-based framework. Instead of a single VPN company handling encryption, two separate providers share the process. This means no single company has access to all user data, reducing metadata exposure and improving privacy.
Kaciulis noted this in an interview with TechRadar:
