Roku just dropped a brand new streaming service called ‘Howdy’ priced at only $2.99 per month.

Howdy is an ad-free platform that launched nationwide today (August 5th), positioning itself as one of the cheapest streaming options available to consumers.
The service features content from major studios including Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, and FilmRise. Popular titles include blockbuster films like “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Blind Side,” plus hit series such as “Weeds” and “Kids in the Hall.”

What Sets Howdy Apart
Unlike many streaming services that start with low introductory rates, Howdy’s $2.99 price point remains constant – not a temporary promotional offer. The platform promises no hidden fees, no contracts, and allows cancellation at any time.

Roku CEO Anthony Wood explained the strategy:
“Priced at less than a cup of coffee, Howdy is ad-free and designed to complement, not compete with, premium services. We’re meeting a real need for consumers who want to unwind with their favorite movies and shows uninterrupted, and on their terms. Howdy is a natural step for us at Roku, extending our mission to make better TV for everyone, by making it affordable, accessible, and built for how people watch today.”
The service includes nearly 10,000 hours of content spanning multiple genres. From romantic comedies to medical dramas, the catalog aims to provide comfort viewing for different tastes and moods.

Major Limitation: Roku Exclusivity
While Howdy offers impressive value at $3 per month, there’s one significant drawback – The service only works on Roku devices, their website, or their mobile app.
If you’ve followed TROYPOINT you’ll know that we do not recommend Roku devices for several reasons.
They hit record revenue at the expense of customers, they have a closed operating system, and don’t offer the customization options that Android TV/Google TV devices provide.
For cord-cutters using Android TV/Google TV or Fire TV devices, Howdy’s is not available unless you purchase additional Roku hardware.
Final Thoughts
Howdy presents excellent value with quality content and ad-free viewing at $2.99 monthly. However, the Roku-only restriction limits its appeal for users of better streaming platforms.
While the price point is attractive, the platform limitation means many tech-savvy streamers will miss out on this affordable option unless they compromise on device quality.
