The following tutorial shows how to copy and paste on Android TV/Google TV and Fire TV devices using free mobile apps.

Typing long add-on URLs with a remote control is painful. One wrong character means starting over from scratch, and some of these strings are 50+ characters long.
I’ve dealt with this across dozens of streaming devices over the years. The solution is simple: use a free companion app on your phone or tablet to copy and paste directly onto your TV screen.
I recommend watching my video tutorial first that explains everything in more detail.

What You Need Before Starting
You’ll need a phone or tablet running Android or iOS (version 15 or higher for Apple devices). Both your mobile device and streaming box must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
For Android TV/Google TV devices, download the Google TV app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
For Fire TV devices, download the Amazon Fire TV app from Google Play or the Apple App Store.

How to Copy and Paste on Android TV/Google TV
This process works on any Android TV or Google TV device, including the Onn 4K Plus which is what I’m using in this tutorial. I am also using an iPhone 16 running iOS version 26.3.
1. First I suggest renaming your streaming device so you can identify it in the app. Go to Settings > System > About > Device Name and enter a custom name. This helps if you own multiple devices on one network.

2. Open the Google TV app on your phone or tablet and look for an option on the bottom right corner that says ‘TVs nearby’ and click that.

3. Select your streaming device from the list.

4. A pairing code will appear on your TV screen. You need this code for the next step.

5. Enter the code from your TV into the app on your phone/tablet and click Pair.

6. Then click the remote control icon at the bottom right corner of the app.

7. We now have a virtual remote control on our phone or tablet. We can also copy & paste with this.

8. To test the copy & paste functionality with our virtual remote, we’ve installed an IPTV player that requires an M3U playlist URL. These are often very long URLs.

9. After finding an M3U playlist URL on our phone, we copied that URL and pasted it into our virtual remote on the Google TV app.

10. Return back to your Android TV/Google TV device and you will notice the URL has pasted perfectly on the TV screen.

That’s it! Now here’s how you can copy and paste on Fire TV devices.
How to Copy and Paste on Fire TV
The process for Fire TV Sticks and Fire TV devices is similar but uses a different companion app.
1. First find your device name by going to Settings > My Fire TV > About. Note that name so you can pick it from the list inside the mobile app. Unlike Android TV boxes, Fire TV devices don’t let you rename them.

2. Launch the Fire TV app on your phone or tablet and sign in with your Amazon account.

3. Select your Fire TV device from the list.

4. Then enter the pairing code that appears on your TV screen.

5. The virtual Fire TV remote will load. Below the directional pad, you’ll see a keyboard icon to the left of the microphone button. Click that icon to launch the keyboard.

6. Just like the Android TV example, we have an M3U playlist URL already copied on our phone’s clipboard. Simply long-press the text input area and click Paste.

7. We installed the same IPTV player on our Fire TV device to test this with our virtual remote. Notice the M3U URL has pasted correctly and this was successful!

Apps That Work with This Method
This copy and paste trick works with any application that requires URL or text input on your streaming device. The most common uses include:
- Stremio configuration links for add-ons
- Nuvio add-on installation URLs
- STRMR add-on installation URLs
- Kodi repository URLs for add-ons
- Any app requiring lengthy text entry
Troubleshooting Common Problems
If the companion app can’t find your streaming device, make sure both your phone and the streaming box are on the same Wi-Fi network. Restarting both devices often fixes discovery issues.
On some Android TV boxes, the Google TV app may ask you to enable permissions during the pairing process. Follow the on-screen prompts and grant access when requested.
Fire TV users who can’t see the keyboard icon should update the Fire TV app to the latest version through their respective app store.
Final Thoughts from Troy
Copying and pasting on Android TV and Fire TV devices is a simple trick that saves a serious amount of time. Gone are the days of pecking through long URLs one character at a time with your remote.
Both the Google TV and Fire TV mobile apps are free and work on Android and Apple phones and tablets alike.
