DAZN Launches Campaign Against IPTV and Streaming Services

A powerful new legal push in Belgium is sending waves through the world of illegal streaming.

DAZN, along with broadcaster 12th Player, has begun a major campaign to shut down unverified IPTV providers and pirate sites.

The move, supported by a court order and top local ISPs, targets over 130 domains tied to sports streaming.

Over 100 Domains Go Dark Before Playoff Weekend

On April 6, Belgian ISPs blocked access to more than 100 unverified streaming sites and five IPTV services just before the second day of the country’s football championship play-offs.

The timing wasn’t random. By cutting access right before key matches, DAZN aimed to make a strong statement.

DAZN called it a “first of its kind” action. While blocking pirate domains isn’t new, this campaign used dynamic blocking backed by Belgium’s updated copyright law.

This method allows rightsholders to quickly counter domain changes and proxy workarounds, without waiting for more court hearings.

DNS Blocking Orders for Tech Giants

What made this action stand out even more was who else was targeted. The Brussels Enterprise Court ordered Cloudflare, Google, and Cisco to block public DNS access to the same domains. These companies must comply or face daily fines of €100,000.

Typically, users would bypass ISP-level blocks by switching to one of these public DNS services. Not this time. Belgian authorities anticipated this workaround and took extra steps to prevent it.

This mirrors a 2024 case in France where Canal+ won a similar ruling. But this time, the scope was even broader—nearly 140 sports streaming domains were affected.

Belgium’s New Legal Tools Show Their Teeth

The 2022 update to Belgium’s anti-piracy laws made this kind of action possible. A fast-track judicial process and a new anti-piracy division within the federal government gave rightsholders more muscle.

It’s part of a broader effort to give companies like DAZN the tools they need to protect their broadcast rights.

The Belgian ISPs involved—Telenet, Proximus, Voo, and Orange—were already on board.

Their CEOs even publicly supported these types of actions earlier this year. That support made enforcement faster and smoother.

The Bigger Picture: Will It Work?

While over 130 domains were blocked, none of them hosted the actual pirated content. Instead, they linked users to live sports streams hosted elsewhere. Critics point out that the core content pipeline remains untouched.

Still, the size of the campaign and the involvement of tech giants show that the fight against unverified IPTV is getting more aggressive. Whether it slows piracy for good or just forces it deeper underground remains to be seen.
