Around this time, he discovered Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) through Facebook and subscribed to a service called Flawless TV.

Unknown to him, this service would be shut down years later, its operators imprisoned for large-scale piracy.

What started as a curiosity turned into a side venture as Merrell began reselling Flawless subscriptions. Branding his service as “Media Maverick,” Merrell attracted customers looking for discounted access to channels like Sky TV and BT Sport.

At just £10 per month, his service offered a 90% discount over official subscriptions. Though it’s unclear if he was driven by financial need or the appeal of extra income, his business soon flourished.

Success and the Path to Legal Trouble

Merrell’s service gained popularity, and he began declaring £25,000 in yearly profits to HMRC under “educational resources and online support.”

Though a questionable categorization, Merrell may have seen it as a way to stay somewhat honest. However, to broadcasters and law enforcement, his attempts at transparency held little significance.

In April 2020, an investigator purchased a subscription from Media Maverick and accessed Sky and BT Sport channels.

Following another test purchase in November 2020, authorities raided Merrell’s home in early 2021, seizing five electronic devices.

Merrell admitted to serving around 1,000 customers, later updated to 2,000. Analysis revealed Media Maverick had generated over £400,000, far exceeding his HMRC-declared income.

Conviction and Appeal Denial

Merrell ultimately pled guilty to charges related to circumventing anti-piracy measures and advertising these services. In February 2023, he was sentenced to 12 months on each count, to run concurrently.

Merrell requested that his sentence be suspended, arguing his long-standing positive contributions to education and family life.

Despite his previously clean record and mitigating factors, the Court of Appeal upheld the original sentence. The court argued that Merrell’s four-year offense period and significant profits indicated a need for custodial punishment.

Financial losses to broadcasters were estimated between £2 and £3 million, though specific numbers were impossible to confirm.

The decision to deny Merrell’s appeal highlights the courts’ stance on piracy-related convictions.
