Amazon Patches Fire TV Exploit But There’s A Workaround

Amazon has patched the Fire TV exploit that allowed custom launchers and blocking updates.  But, if you have a router with Firewall settings there is a workaround for you!  New video below showing how to do this!

Amazon Patches Fire TV Exploit

A few days ago, I showed you how to take advantage of a major Fire TV exploit that allowed custom launchers, blocked updates, and gave users control over their devices. And just like I predicted, Amazon moved quickly to shut this down.

But I’ve shown a way to bypass this by blocking updates at the router level. Read below to see how you can still take advantage of this exploit on Fire TV devices.

The company has started rolling out software update version 8.1.5.3 for Fire TV Stick 4K and Fire TV Stick 4K Max devices. This update patches the exploit that allowed users to gain system privileges on their streaming devices.

What This Means for Fire TV Users

If you followed my tutorial, you’re likely safe as long as you blocked updates during the process. However, anyone who hasn’t taken advantage of this exploit yet faces a difficult choice.

The software update was built on September 26, just weeks after the exploit became public on XDA Forums. While the patch has only been confirmed for Fire OS 8 devices so far, Fire OS 7 devices like the Fire TV Cube will probably receive similar updates soon.

Should You Still Try This?

You can still apply this exploit hack to Fire TV devices currently on store shelves. The key is preventing your device from updating before you administer the hack.

I tested this by purchasing a brand new third generation Fire TV Cube and blocking updates through my router, which allowed me to successfully apply the exploit.

Keep in mind this exploit won’t work on future Fire TV models that Amazon releases, but devices already manufactured should work fine if you follow the router blocking method below.

Consider Android TV & Google TV Alternatives

This situation highlights why I’ve been recommending Android TV and Google TV devices as better alternatives to Fire TV products. These platforms offer more freedom without requiring exploits or workarounds.

Some people worry about the recent news regarding Google blocking side-loading from non-certified developers. However, this concern is overblown.

Popular apps like Stremio, Kodi, and TiviMate will continue working because they will probably have developer-certified credentials. The new policy actually helps by keeping malicious apps off devices while legitimate apps remain accessible.  If the developers don’t get the proper credentials, we will still be able to side-load anything that we want via ADB.

Final Thoughts

Amazon’s quick response to patch this exploit shows they don’t want users having full control over their devices. This decision likely protects their advertising revenue rather than improving user experience.

For those seeking more flexibility, Android TV and Google TV devices provide better long-term solutions without the cat-and-mouse game of exploits and patches.
