Cloudflare Blocks Pirate Sites in UK for the First Time

Cloudflare has become the first internet intermediary beyond local residential ISPs to block access to pirate sites in the UK.

Users attempting to access certain blocked domains now see “Error 451 – Unavailable for Legal Reasons” messages, marking a significant expansion in anti-piracy enforcement.

How the Site Blocking System Works

Traditional UK pirate site blocking has relied on major ISPs like BT, Virgin Media, Sky, TalkTalk, EE, and Plusnet. These companies comply with High Court injunctions through “no fault” orders, where ISPs indicate they won’t contest blocking requests.

The latest wave affects nearly 200 pirate domains requested by the Motion Picture Association. However, Cloudflare’s involvement adds a new layer of blocking that catches users who might otherwise bypass ISP restrictions.
