7 Movie ‘Cammers’ Arrested During Record Anti-Piracy Year

According to the Film Content Protection Agency (FCPA), cinema staff across the UK stopped 105 camming attempts last year. Seven individuals were arrested, and five more received police cautions.

Even with today’s short theatrical windows, piracy remains a threat. Cams are low in quality but still show up online shortly after release. In 2022, a handful of clear cam copies appeared online, traced back to two UK theaters.

That led to a major investigation and the 2023 conviction of a 24-year-old for fraud and copyright violations. Since then, security has only tightened.

29 Months Without a Major Leak

The FCPA works with the Film Distributors’ Association (FDA) to protect films during their cinema runs. Their efforts have led to an unprecedented 29-month stretch without any full leaks from UK or Irish cinemas.

Simon Brown, FCPA director, confirmed that all theatrical releases in 2023 were protected. Much of this success comes from updated surveillance, ticket tracing, and targeted staff training.

Film forensics now plays a major role. If a recording does surface online, investigators can trace it back to the exact screen and even the time it was captured. CCTV footage, ticket purchases, and seating patterns all help build cases against suspects.

Staff Training and Incentives Pay Off

A key piece of the FCPA’s strategy is keeping theater employees sharp. In 2024, they trained more than 1,500 cinema workers through 48 in-person sessions. That helped staff spot and stop every one of the 105 camming incidents reported that year.

Theaters also offer cash rewards when staff help catch or disrupt pirate activity in real time. This added incentive keeps awareness high and reactions quick.

The One That Slipped Through

Only one leak made it online in 2024—and even that wasn’t a full video. In May, a pirated movie surfaced with audio recorded in a Glasgow cinema, matched with video from a theater in Mexico. This mix made the copy more desirable in English-speaking regions.

The FCPA quickly traced the recording and identified two suspects. Police Scotland is now working with investigators to continue the case into 2025.

A Strong Year for Theaters

The UK’s anti-piracy record is setting a new standard. From the high-profile bust in 2022 to 29 months without a full leak, the results speak for themselves.

With trained staff, smart tech, and strong partnerships, the theater industry is showing that protecting new releases is still possible, even in the streaming age.
