Pirate IPTV Subscriptions Hit Record Highs in Sweden

A new report has revealed a massive rise in pirate IPTV streaming in Sweden.

Between spring and fall of 2024, pirate IPTV subscriptions increased by 25%, with an estimated 700,000 households now paying for access to unauthorized live TV and on-demand content.

This surge presents a growing challenge for the Swedish government, which is under pressure to address the issue.

Officials are now considering a potential ban on citizens viewing IPTV services, but details on how this would be enforced remain unclear.

The Shift From Free Piracy to Paid Access

Sweden has long been associated with online piracy, particularly due to its connection to The Pirate Bay and torrenting. However, the modern piracy landscape has evolved significantly.

Unlike early internet pirates who justified their actions as a fight against media monopolies, today’s IPTV services operate purely as commercial businesses.

Once stigmatized, paying for pirated content is now widely accepted among Swedish consumers. Many appear willing to spend money on black-market IPTV services that offer thousands of live channels and on-demand movies for a fraction of the cost of legal alternatives.

Government Response Lags as Piracy Grows

The Swedish government has been slow to take concrete action against the growing number of households relying on pirate IPTV.

While an ongoing national film policy review was originally expected to address the issue, the investigation has now shifted focus entirely to illegal streaming services.

Investigator Eva Bergquist has been tasked with assessing the financial damage caused by IPTV piracy and determining whether action should be taken against individuals who pay for these services.

Minister of Culture Parisa Liljestrand has confirmed that the government is exploring the idea of banning citizens from using illegal IPTV, but the effectiveness of such a ban remains in question.

As far as we’re aware, it is not illegal for a consumer to access IPTV in Sweden, Canada, UK, the US, and several other parts of the world. Those providing and profiting from pirate services is where the legal issues take place.

Will a ‘Viewing Ban’ Change Anything?

Legal precedent already exists within the European Union regarding illegal streaming. In 2017, the Court of Justice of the European Union ruled that consuming pirated content is unlawful.

Whether a new Swedish-specific ban would have any impact is uncertain, especially when past enforcement efforts have done little to curb piracy.

With record-breaking piracy numbers and no immediate government action in sight, Sweden’s illegal IPTV market is likely to continue thriving.
