Pirate IPTV Operator Sentenced to Over 2 Years in Prison

A man operating a pirate IPTV service from his home in Birmingham, UK, has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison.

Gary McNally, 55, pleaded guilty to fraud-related charges for running what authorities described as a “sophisticated” illegal streaming platform.

The case highlights the increasing crackdown on IPTV in the UK and raises questions about the effectiveness of anti-piracy efforts.

Rare IPTV Case of Sourcing Content Directly

McNally’s platform, identified as Each Online by the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), ran from November 2017 to June 2020.

Unlike many other IPTV operators who source pirated content from third parties, McNally obtained premium channels directly by using legitimate NOW TV accounts.

This approach, while unusual, made him more vulnerable to detection by broadcasters like Sky, which launched the investigation that ultimately led to his conviction.

Authorities also discovered McNally paid more than £400 monthly for high-capacity broadband, which raised suspicion due to unusually high levels of streaming and upstream traffic from his home in Acocks Green.

Guilty Plea and Sentencing

Appearing at Birmingham Crown Court in March 2024, McNally admitted to two counts of fraud under the Fraud Act 2006.

The charges stemmed from creating and supplying tools used to commit fraud. He received concurrent sentences of two years and nine months for each count.

Matt Hibbert, Group Director of Anti-Piracy at Sky, commended law enforcement efforts, saying, “We are grateful to the West Midlands Police for acting so robustly to take down a highly sophisticated illegal streaming operation.” He added that Sky remains committed to protecting its content and combating piracy.

The West Midlands Police issued a similar statement, emphasizing their dedication to disrupting criminal activity and sending a strong message to others involved in illegal streaming operations.

Initial Subscriber Estimates Overstated

When McNally’s home was raided in 2021, authorities initially claimed “hundreds of thousands” of people were using his service. However, court proceedings revealed the actual subscriber count was significantly lower.

FACT disclosed that during a 2018 world championship boxing match broadcast by Sky, McNally’s service had just over 2,000 subscribers.

Two additional individuals were also arrested during the raid. One was released with no further action, while the other remains under investigation.

The case demonstrates the challenges in prosecuting IPTV piracy, as well as the tendency for early estimates to exaggerate the scope of such operations.

The UK’s Increasing Focus on IPTV Crackdowns

This conviction is part of a broader trend in the UK, which has ramped up enforcement efforts against illegal streaming services in recent years.

Private broadcasters like Sky and the Premier League have poured significant resources into combating piracy, often funding investigations and prosecutions.
