MissAV Operators Ordered to Pay $4.5 Million in Damages

MissAV, one of Asia’s top adult streaming platforms, has suffered a significant legal defeat.

A U.S. federal court recently ordered the platform’s operators to pay $4.5 million in damages for copyright infringement, following the seizure of several of its domain names, including MissAV.com.

This case marks a major step forward in the fight against piracy in the adult entertainment industry, though it also highlights the challenges of achieving lasting enforcement.

Why MissAV Was Targeted

MissAV became one of the most popular adult websites globally, particularly in Japan, hosting uncensored Japanese Adult Videos (JAV). With over 300 million monthly visits, it ranked among the top 60 websites worldwide.

However, this popularity drew the attention of copyright holders, including FANZA and Japanese adult content producer Will Co. LTD. These companies viewed MissAV as a major threat to the legitimate content market.

A U.S. lawsuit filed by Will Co. accused MissAV’s operators of hosting copyrighted material without authorization.

The defendants—Ka Yeung Lee, Youhaha Marketing, Promotion Limited, and others—were linked to Hong Kong but failed to respond to the case, leading to a default judgment in favor of Will Co.

Court Ruling and Domain Seizures

The Washington District Court awarded $4.5 million in damages for 300 copyright infringements, granting Will Co. control of multiple domains, including MissAV.com, ThisAV.com, and others.

The domains now redirect visitors to seizure banners, warning users about the legal consequences of accessing pirated content.

Jason Tucker, president of anti-piracy firm Battleship Stance, praised the ruling, stating, “This case sends a clear message to pirate operators that their actions have serious consequences.”

The legal precedent set by this ruling allows copyright holders to use U.S. courts to pursue piracy sites with international connections, strengthening enforcement efforts across borders.

MissAV’s Quick Recovery

Despite the ruling, MissAV quickly resumed operations through a new domain, MissAV.ws. The site made no mention of the legal action, continuing to provide access to its content.

This rapid transition underscores the challenges of permanently dismantling piracy platforms, even with successful court actions.

Battleship Stance confirmed that further efforts are underway to target MissAV’s new domains, but the site’s persistence raises concerns about the effectiveness of current anti-piracy measures.
