This NordVPN Review was written by Troy from TROYPOINT after using the VPN service on a regular basis for approximately three weeks.
NordVPN provided me with a free account for the purpose of this review and additional tutorials in the future. However, this review is unbiased and you will see that I point out both the good and bad regarding this popular VPN service.
In this review, I will be using two of the most popular devices that people use in conjunction with NordVPN which is a Fire TV Stick 4K Max and Windows PC.
You can find our setup guide for Fire TV Stick/Fire TV and Android TV devices via link below.

Fastest VPN
NordVPN touts their service as the fastest currently available on the market today.

If you’ve ever used a VPN service, you know that you usually get faster download speeds when connecting to a server that’s closest to your physical location.
NordVPN has over 5,200 servers worldwide which should ensure customers can enjoy the fastest connection.
The following quote is pulled directly from the NordVPN Website.
Go for a VPN service provider with wide server coverage. The math is simple here: more servers mean less overcrowding and better speeds. Plus, a variety of worldwide locations will ensure you will find a server nearby, wherever you are.
Another reason for the fast speeds is due to the new NordLynx VPN Protocol that I mentioned earlier and will test later in this review.
When talking about VPN speeds, it’s important to point out that there are a lot of factors that come into play here. Network setup, Internet speed, distance from server, and many more elements determine your Internet speed when connected to a VPN.
Mask Your IP Address
There are multiple ways to mask your IP Address and using a VPN is the best way due to one main reason.

A VPN will encrypt your connection to the Internet while also changing your IP Address.
This means that even if your data was ever accessed, it wouldn’t be readable due to the encryption that takes place when connecting through a VPN tunnel.
Whenever you click the Connect button within your NordVPN application, your IP address will change so you can’t be identified online.
Secure Internet
NordVPN uses AES with 256-bit encryption, which is recommended by the NSA for securing classified information.

This type of encryption is typical for most popular VPN services.
One of the most important aspects to examine when it comes to VPN security is the different protocols that a service uses.
NordVPN utilizes three different VPN protocols.
OpenVPN
The OpenVPN protocol has been around for a long time and still offers a secure connection through either UDP and TCP ports.
Most VPN users will find faster download/streaming speeds by using the UDP port when using Open VPN protocol.
The main reason for OpenVPN popularity among VPN services is its open source code, which is freely available for review and modification. This means that there are literally thousands of developers committed to keeping the OpenVPN secure and bug free.
NordLynx
This is the one that I’m excited to test out.
The biggest hype lately among VPN services is the new Wireguard protocol that is usually faster for most users.
Wireguard consists of only 4,000 lines of code which is 100 times less than OpenVPN which should translate into a more efficient VPN experience.
Unfortunately, Wireguard out of the box can’t ensure complete user privacy, therefore NordVPN developed their own protocol.
NordLynx VPN Protocol was developed by NordVPN and provides a double NAT (Network Address Translation) system.

NordLynx uses the new Wireguard VPN Protocol as its backbone which should result in faster download and streaming speeds.
We will get into download speed tests later in this review to see how well this new protocol stacks up against OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec.

Strict No-Logs Policy
NordVPN keeps no logs of your online activity.

Since NordVPN is incorporated in Panama, there are no data retention laws to adhere to.
NordVPN volunteered to be audited by one of the most popular firms, PricewaterhouseCoopers AG, Zurich, Switzerland in both 2018 and 2020.
Both reports found that Nord’s no-log policy description was fair and accurate.
Block Malware and More
Here’s where NordVPN goes above and beyond of what most VPN services offer.
NordVPN offers an advanced Threat Protection feature within its applications that blocks cyber threats before they can do anything harmful to your device.

This Threat Protection helps to identify malware-ridden files, blocks trackers, intrusive ads, and keeps you from landing on malicious websites.
You can activate the Threat Protection feature within the NordVPN application and it will work even if you’re not connected to one of their VPN servers.
Privacy on the Go
Most TROYPOINT visitors use a VPN to protect themselves when streaming from questionable apps or IPTV services.
It’s important to point out that VPNs should also be used when connecting to a public WiFi Hotspot when away from home.

NordVPN provides applications through both Google Play and Apple App Store so you can use your VPN account when away from home as well.
VPN Servers Everywhere
I touched on this a bit earlier when explaining the reason for the great download speeds that come with NordVPN.
As of this review, NordVPN offers 5,282 ultra-fast servers in 60 countries around the world.

It’s extremely important to have numerous servers to connect to for a few different reasons.
The first reason is that you will usually experience faster speeds connecting to a server closer to where you are located.
Multiple servers also allow you to get around geo-blocking often imposed by streaming services/apps. In theory, I should be able to connect to a UK server and retrieve the Netflix library for that region. I will put this to the test later in the review.
Obfuscated Servers
Here is another big plus when it comes to NordVPN.
They use obfuscated servers.

This means that they can hide the fact that you’re using a VPN.
There are some banking websites, streaming services, and others that block traffic coming from a VPN connected device. Sometimes you may also see the captcha requirement when trying to search for something in Google.
Obfuscated servers are designed to get around the VPN blocks and I will put this to the test later in the review when I test a few streaming services.

Mutli-factor Authentication
NordVPN protects your account by implementing multi-factor authentication.

This means that when you log into your NordVPN application, you will be required to verify the login attempt with a special app, time-sensitive code, or second device.
Now, some people don’t like this feature and thankfully Nord provides the ability to enable/deactivate it.
Kill Switch
Here’s another feature that most VPN services provide.
NordVPN provides a kill switch which will terminate your connection to the Internet in case your VPN ever disconnects.

Your Internet connection will be remain blocked until the encrypted tunnel is restored on your device.
Unfortunately, this doesn’t work on streaming devices such as the Fire TV Stick or NVIDIA Shield. For those looking for protection on those devices, VPNSafetyDot is a great alternative.
Split Tunneling
Although NordVPN uses obfuscated servers, you may still come across applications that don’t work when a VPN is enabled.
Split tunneling allows you to bypass the VPN connection for certain apps that reside on your device.

By doing this, you won’t need to disconnect from your VPN whenever you want to use these apps that don’t play nice with a VPN.
Hopefully, this feature won’t be needed very often due to the technology NordVPN uses to fly under the radar and go unnoticed as a VPN connection.
Dedicated IP Address
NordVPN customers can order a dedicated IP Address.

Normally, when you connect to a VPN server, your IP address changes, but you share it with other users. However, you can buy a dedicated IP address, which will exclusively belong to you.
This is often used by businesses who restrict server access to specific IP addresses.
I personally suggest not doing this unless you need a static IP address to access a secure server, system, etc.
One of the benefits of using the standard IP addresses that NordVPN offers is that there are other users using them as well. All of the traffic gets mixed together which improves user-end security.
Double VPN
NordVPN offers a feature called Double VPN.

By using this, your Internet traffic will be routed through two VPN servers instead of one. So, your data will be encrypted twice.
- Your traffic is first encrypted on your device and redirected to a remote VPN server.
- It reaches the server and gets re-encrypted.
- The encrypted traffic then passes through a second VPN server, where it gets decrypted.
- You reach your internet destination securely and privately.
At first glance, I would assume that this will slow down Internet speed so users would probably only want to do this on a case-by-case basis.
I will test the download speeds with this feature later in this review.
Onion Over VPN
Using the Onion Over VPN connection is another feature offered by NordVPN.

In the Onion network, you send your traffic through a network of volunteer-operated servers.
It goes through three stages:
- Entry – You connect to the Onion network at a random entry point
- Maze of Servers – While traveling through multiple servers, your data is enveloped in layers of encryption.
- Decryption – Further down the road, the layers of encryption are peeled off one by one.
- Your data is decrypted, and you exit through a random node, landing on the web.
So, as with Double VPN, you are adding additional layers of security to your connection.
Is this needed? Probably not. Again, more than likely, this will negatively effect download speed.
P2P VPN
NordVPN offers P2P servers that are optimized for peer-to-peer traffic.

Most often, this type of technology is used for torrenting.
Buffer-Free Streaming
If you’re going to be using a VPN while streaming, it’s extremely important to find a fast one that allows buffer-free playback.

Since TROYPOINT’s main focus centers around the streaming landscape, we will never offer a VPN review where the end result leads to buffering.
NordVPN is a top-rated VPN service and buffering shouldn’t be an issue unless you are already using a slow Internet connection.
Browser Extensions
NordVPN offers browser extensions for Firefox, Edge, and Chrome.

The main advantage of using the browser extension is for the quick connect action.
You won’t need to leave your browser, find your VPN app, and then click the connect button. You can do it all by clicking the browser extension in your browser toolbar.
No Data Leaks
NordVPN uses private DNS servers to avoid data leaks.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is the reason why browsing the internet is so quick and simple. Its job is resolving domain names such as “nordvpn.com” into actual IP addresses. In other words, it translates the long, complex numeric names of web servers into human language, and the other way around.
This is how it works: Whenever you want to visit our website, you type “nordvpn.com” into your browser. Your computer or smartphone sends a query to a DNS server: it contacts the server and asks for the unique IP address of our site. Only after the DNS server provides the IP address, your device can finally connect to the website you want.
When you connect to NordVPN, your device only uses DNS servers operated by NordVPN. All your DNS queries travel over the encrypted tunnel and are resolved on the same VPN server you are connected to.
This way, you never have to worry about your confidential information leaking and third parties spying on it.
NordVPN Fire TV / Android TV Application
NordVPN does provide an application for Fire TV and Android TV systems.

You will find most of the features in this app that you find in Nord’s other applications.
It seems that this application needs to be updated with a more polished user interface.
When connected to the VPN, when I go back into the NordVPN app, I get a spinning wheel for approximately 7 seconds.

All of the features within the Firestick / Android TV app seem to work fine but the user interface could use some work in my opinion.
24/7 Support
There’s no doubt that NordVPN is dedicated to customer support.

You can reach them by live chat, email, and social media.
They also provide an easy-to-use help section that includes video tutorials, written tutorials, faq, and more.
As of this review, NordVPN has a Trustpilot score of 4.3 our of 5 stars with 11,736 reviews. This is a great score as most people use these types of sites when they’re disgruntled.
NordVPN Download Speeds
All VPNs reduce download speed due to the encryption being performed and your traffic being tunneled through a secure server. So, naturally download speed is one of the main features that needs to be examined with any type of VPN.
I will be testing download speeds on my Windows 10 PC and Fire TV Stick 4K Max.
I have 1GB fiber download speed maximum provided by my ISP.
When testing wireless speeds, I am connecting to my Asus ROG Rapture WiFi 6 Router (GT-AX11000).
I’m using the TROYPOINT Download Speed Test for the PC testing and Analiti for Fire TV Stick 4K Max.

Geo-Block Testing
I tested NordVPN with Netflix, Amazon Prime, and DAZN.
I connected to the UK server when performing these tests.
Amazon Prime and DAZN worked great but Netflix was a different story.
When trying to connect to Netflix via UK VPN location on my Fire TV Stick 4K Max, I got the following screen.

It seems that Netflix is getting extremely good at blocking users who are trying to circumvent their geo-blocks.
NordVPN is Real-Debrid Friendly
Many TROYPOINT fans use Real-Debrid, which is an unrestricted downloader that provides access to buffer-free media streams.
Real-Debrid does not work well with all VPN providers but thankfully NordVPN is on their Cooperative VPN Providers list.
Because of this, we have included NordVPN in our list of Best VPNs for Real Debrid.
Socks5 Proxy Support
NordVPN does provide Socks5 Proxy support.
You can find setup instructions for this within their help section.
This technology provides an extra layer of protection for those who download torrents.
6 Devices Per Account
NordVPN allows customers to use their service on up to 6 different devices at the same time.

It’s important to point out that you can install this on as many devices as you would like but you can only use 6 simultaneous VPN connections at once.
Due to the number of Internet-connected devices that we use on a daily basis, this is definitely a negative in my opinion.
I would like to see this bumped to at least 10 devices per account and 20 would be optimal.
Thankfully, there is a workaround for this 6-device limit if you have a compatible router.
NordVPN provides instructions on how to install their VPN on a router. By doing this, your entire network will be protected and you will only use one connection out of your 6.

NordVPN Pricing
As of this review, here is the pricing for NordVPN.

2-Year Plan – 66% Off – $95.76
1-Year Plan – 58% Off – $59.88

NordVPN Review Final Thoughts
There’s a reason why NordVPN is one of the most popular VPNs on the market today. It’s fast, secure, and offers numerous features that other providers don’t have.
This service offers numerous features that other VPN providers don’t.
The Threat Protection feature that comes with the NordVPN is very handy and may relieve customers from also purchasing an anti-malware, tracker blocker, and ad blocker applications.
The new NordLynx VPN Protocol is extremely fast. I really noticed this on my Windows PC where I got 685 Mbps download speed!
NordVPN does offer additional levels of security through their Double VPN and Onion Over VPN servers but this is probably overkill for most VPN users. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice having these stronger security options but I don’t think it will pertain to most people.
If you’ve had problems with slow download speeds on other VPNs in the past, I would strongly suggest trying NordVPN. If you’re looking for a VPN service to get around various streaming geo-locks, this is great for that as well, besides Netflix.
Keep in mind that NordVPN offers a no-risk 30-day money-back guarantee so if it doesn’t work properly for you, get a refund and try something else.
How does NordVPN compare to our recommended VPN which is IPVanish VPN you may ask?
NordVPN checks most of the boxes that IPVanish does but there are three major differences.
- IPVanish customers can use the VPN on unlimited devices whereas only 6 with NordVPN
- The IPVanish introductory prices are a lot less than NordVPN
- IPVanish VPN Firestick / Android TV apps more polished than NordVPN
Because of the three main reasons noted above, IPVanish VPN still outranks NordVPN but it’s close.
TROYPOINT rates the NordVPN service 4.6/5 stars.

I’m wondering if others have run across issues when using NordLynx. It definitely threw me a few curves restricting access to the internet etc. so much so that I don’t think I will renew with Nord in the future. When I did a google search on NordLynx issues started seeing that this is a product that isn’t ready for prime time release. Just wondering if others have had issues with it
Hi Bob, that would be a great question for our Insider Forum – https://troypointinsider.com/
GREAT review TROY ???
Thank you so much.
Tried all VPN’s. I subscribed to ipvanish for 4 years. NordVPN will update when Netflix can’t be used (UK library, and other countries Netflix has a few libraries Australia, Canada,Mexico, Japan) if having issues you can message support. All other VPN’s given up on trying to get passed Netflix geo blocks. All VPN services will give a trial period. NordVPN is the winner hands down. Speeds are very good you can get HD HDR movies with Netflix libraries. I can’t get Australia’s Library in hd or hdr from Cali.
Troypoint has the best guides. Been using Troypoint for info on iptv’s and cord cutting issues. Don’t need to go anywhere else for help. Thank you for updating content. Nobody updates as good as Troy
Thanks for the review. After hearing great things about NordVPN, I finally gave it a try last month. But I was disappointed. My only purpose of using a VPN is to be able to stream content from Indian sites, primarily, SonyLIV India, Hotstar India and Amazon Prime India. When I connected to any of the Indian servers, I could not connect to SonyLiv and Amazon Prime India. I contacted NordVPN for support, but they couldn’t help. Finally, I cancelled my subscription.
Let me know if things have changed now.
Another great review! Thanks Troy!!
Hi Troy, great review! I currently own both iPVanish and NordVPN, because I can get programming on Nord that I cannot on the VPN. Having said that, would it be feasible to put either program on my router or just use them both as need on my Firestick 4K? I would not want to prevent either program from working if I put one of them on the router. Your thoughts?
Hi there, I would suggest just keeping each app on the Firestick and connecting to whatever you prefer at the time
email.server.troypoint.com uses an unsupported protocol. This is the message I get when I try to subscribe.
Hi Charles, what did you try signing up for? See if this works – https://troypoint.com/troypoint-advisor/
Can I load Ip-vanish on my router?
Hi Charles, yes you can – https://troypoint.com/vpn-on-router/
I enjoyed the review. I use HideAway from Firetrust as my VPN service. It does not have all the features of other VPN providers but I have not found any other service to be faster. I have 600Mbs fiber service and get 600Mbs up and down with HideAway using your speed test, which is better than what you got with faster internet service. It would be interesting if you could do a comparison and provide your thoughts. My router is an ASUS RT-AX89X with an ethernet connection.
Troy, I use IPvanish but am interested in nordvpn to load on my router. My question is, if I want to watch Netflix, how do I turn it off when I watch it?
Hi there, you will have to enable split tunneling for Netflix within the NordVPN app on Firestick.
I have recently tried all of the following vpns, because none seemed to satisfy my requirements. Each either didn’t have all the features i wanted, caused buffering, slow speed, or didnt access all sites.
I finally settled on Expressvpn. Although it is expensive, it met my needs.
PRIVATE INTERNET ACCESS
SURFSHARK
NORDVPN
PUREVPN
EXPRESSVPN
IPVANISH
Hi Arnie, thanks for the comment. Yea choosing a VPN isn’t the easiest these days with many available providers.
ExpressVPN is currently our #2 ranked VPN – https://troypoint.com/expressvpn-review-fast-secure-reliable-and-feature-rich/
I signed up with Nord VPN for a 2 yr plan (that ended a couple of months ago). It was the first time I had used a VPN. I mainly used it on my Android cell phone and MacBook Pro laptop. Over the 2 yr period i’ve always had issues with web sites I was trying to access while connected to the VPN not opening on both devices. Very frustrating! I wound up disconnecting from the VPN in order to open the web sites. Nothing out of the ordinary as far as web sites go. So, at the end of the 2 yr commitment I did not renew as it was a disappointing experience for me. I would like to sign up for a VPN once again for obvious reasons but reluctant to do so. I use Safari on my MacBook and Duck Duck Go on both as well. Any known issues using either of these with Nord or any other VPN service? I would like to be secure once again!
Hi Mike – I would look into our top recommended VPN provider which is IPVanish – https://troypoint.com/ipvanish-review/
I’ve been a loyal NordVPN customer for a good number of years, however I feel this will end soon. I recently purchased a X96 X4 android box and cannot load Nord on it. They’re trying hard to resolve the problem – we have been going back and forth some 10 times, still no VPN on the box.
Don’t know if you (or followers) have checked out this android box, but it doesn’t seem to work with Kodi 19.X I had to revert to Kodi 18.9. There are other points which I dislike about the box but I will not cover here.
Great job Troy – learned a lot!

Hi Troy,
I had iPVanish for a 2 years and I found it just could not get around the BBC iPlayer guard. I’ve now had NordVPN for 2 years and am currently just started my 2nd 2 year stint. I chose Nord because it can obviate the BBC iPlayer check although you do have to choose from a subset of the Brit servers.
Thanks for all your work,,
John
My major issue with Nord is the inability to easily select the U.S. server on the fire stick. Unless you know which server you want, you have to enter it maually which is a pain. Otherwise, you just get the server they default to, in whatever state and city they choose. It wirks fine with the PC.You can easily select whichever server you want.
Could you possibly do a comparison review of surfshark vs ipvanish? Both nordvpn and surfshark have had some grewt traction recently. This was a great review of nordvpn.
Hi Brian, working on Surfshark as we speak. Will be coming out within the next few weeks.
Nice review. Probably the 3 things I find appealing about the NordVPN that don’t seem to exist in IPVanish (yes, I still have it and have been using it for many years) are the following:
1. NordVPN incorporates a :Kill Switch” that works on FireTV Sticks, PC’s and more. When the VPN Dies for any reason, ALL STREAMING STOPS until you fix it. With IPVanish, Not only did their tech support tell me they don’t have it, but I found that all of my 4 Firesticks just get a new local IP Address from my router and keep on streaming exposing your activities to your ISP.
2. NordVPN WILL AUTOMATICALLY STARTUP when the FireTV Stick is Powered on or Rebooted. NO USER INTERVENTION REQUIRED!!! IPVanish requires you to to go to the application and start it and/or manually click on the popup to “Connect to Last…” and it WILL NOT Automatically Connect in the background. Again this was verified by IPVanish Tech Support and Dev team telling me it was actually designed this way on purpose.
3. My understanding is that the NordVPN company is not based in one of the “Five Eyes” Countries and therefore its more likely your information will be kept more secure.
For those that don’t know, A group of nations has joined with the United States to form what is known as the Five Eyes, also known simply as FVEY. This is an intelligence cooperative in the areas of military intelligence, human intelligence, and signals intelligence. FVEY can be traced back to the 1941 Atlantic Charter, which was a secret treaty first began with the United Kingdom – Untied States of America Agreement (UKUSA) that was signed in 1946. It was in 1946 when the UKUSA Agreement was formally enacted, then later was extended to other nations. There are five nations that are part of FVEY. Those nations are Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Australia monitors South and East Asia. Canada monitors Russia, China, and Latin America. New Zealand is responsible for monitoring Southeast Asia and the western Pacific. The United Kingdom monitors Europe, European Russia, the Middle East, and Hong Kong. Finally, the United States monitors China, the Middle East, Russia, Africa, and the Caribbean. Throughout the years, there have been many high-profile people under surveillance by FVEY. Some surprising people that have been under surveillance include musician John Lennon, comedian Charlie Chaplin, actress Jane Fonda, and Princess Diana.
From the NordVPN Wiki Page, NordVPN is developed by Nord Security, a company that creates cybersecurity software and was initially supported by the Lithuanian startup accelerator and business incubator Tesonet.[10] NordVPN operates under the jurisdiction of Panama, as the country has no mandatory data retention laws and does not participate in the Five Eyes or Fourteen Eyes intelligence sharing alliances. Its offices are located in Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Panama and the Netherlands.[11]
All good things for personal security in my opinion.
Dammit, just renewed for 2 more years last week, now THIS cheaper price comes out……could have saved $16
Troy that is what I call a complete review and comparison to Ip Vanish of which I am using at this time. Your review has given me food for thought. Thanks
Enjoyed the review. Using both Roku and Firestick with NordVPN for several years, your review pointed out several benefits that I was unaware. Specifically, logging on other world sites. I downloaded Netflix to my Firestick and connected to Germany with out issues. Then, of course, I had to try the United Kingdom site to try Netflix. I was able to connect without issue, listing the weeks most popular videos of the week in the UK.
Great review Troy. I have been using NordVpn for the last 8 years or so. Their system works exceptionally well. And their support is outstanding. And to anyone reading this, I have no association whatsoever with Nord Vpn.
They are allegedly merging with surfshark and there was some speculation by “windscribe” that the no logs policy would soon be removed. I suggest that “Windscribe” were trying to drum up business for themselves.
I contacted NordVpn and they assured me that they will still maintain a no logs policy and customers privacy and information would NOT be shared by them and governments.
VERY GOOD REVIEW TROY
THANKS
