If you are a Free VPN user, you may unknowingly be allowing app owners the ability to access your traffic and data.
Sensor Tower, a mobile app intelligence company, has been collecting data from millions who use popular free VPN and Ad-blocker apps on iPhone and Android.
These apps include Unlimited VPN, Luna VPN, Mobile Data, and Adblock Focus, among others. Until recently, these apps were available for installation via Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
Google has recently removed the Mobile Data app from the Play Store and Apple has eliminated Adblock Focus.
After installation, app users were prompted to install a root certificate that grants access to the owner’s data. Senser Tower states the data is collected anonymously and used for its products.
The company’s head of mobile insights, Randy Nelson, explained how this works to BuzzFeed News:
Our apps do not track, request, or store any sensitive user data such as passwords, usernames, etc., from users or other apps on a user’s device, including web browsers
Most of these applications are no longer available for download due to removal for policy violations.
This is a great example of why using a “Free” service is not an attractive option when it comes to your privacy and security.
This is especially true for VPN providers as the main purpose of these applications is to ensure your safety.
While most feel they have protection with a VPN Provider, a free service may actually do more harm than good. Read the article below for more information:
