A VPN router will secure all of the devices that are connected to it through WiFi or Ethernet port.

The router will encrypt the connection to the Internet and then tunnel the traffic through your VPN provider’s server.  By doing this, your IP address will also change, making all of the devices on your network 100% anonymous.

When you setup a VPN on router, you will no longer need to use your provider’s application on each individual device, which is very handy.

There are some devices where it isn’t possible to install a VPN application such as Xbox One, Roku, Apple TV, and PlayStation.  In this case, the best practical solution is setting up the VPN directly on the router.

There are two methods of setting up a VPN on router.

The first is what I suggest which involves using an Asus router with the AsusWRT Firmware.

The second method requires flashing a new firmware onto the router and then setting up the VPN.  In essence, you are installing a new operating system on the router when you do this.  Not all routers are capable of running 3rd party firmware, proceed with caution.

For this to work properly, you need two things.

VPN Router Requirements

IPVanish VPN1. You must  use a fast VPN service.

Due to the speed decrease that happens when using a VPN router, its extremely important to use a fast VPN.

Running a VPN on a router requires processing power and this decreases the download speed.

Using a fast VPN will minimize the decrease in download speed on your router.

As mentioned earlier, running a VPN requires processing power.

The more processing power on your VPN router, the faster it will download.

No, you can’t purchase a $50 router and expect it to run a VPN properly.

Also, if you are using a router provided by your Internet Service Provider, that won’t work either.

As you will see in my first tutorial below, these routers come with the ability to run a VPN on them.  You won’t need to flash new firmware with these routers like I show in the second tutorial.

Each of these models comes with the AsusWRT firmware which allows for quick VPN router setup.

These two Asus routers are also extremely powerful so they are capable of running a VPN in the background.

There are companies that charge big bucks for flashed routers but my guides below are meant to help you do this on your own, which will save you a lot of money.

I will also show you how to set up a dual router configuration with one running the VPN service and the other open as normal.  This is handy for two main reasons.

The first is that some websites and online services are hit-and-miss with VPNs and this will allow you to quickly switch to an open network to access those sites.

The other reason is due to download speed.  Since download speed diminishes when running a VPN on your router, having another router with open access is nice for times when you need as much speed as possible.

Don’t get too hung up on the download speed dilemma as it only takes 5 to 10 Mbps to stream 1080p HD video.

In the following tutorials, I am using two of the most popular VPN routers that are available which is the Asus AC3100 and Netgear R7000.  You can definitely use this tutorial with other router models as long as they provide the same type of support needed for the VPN that these two do.

NOTE: The example below uses Windows OS. However, the procedure is also applicable to any OS.

Follow the instructions that came with the router and have it hooked up with your cable modem and network. Make sure that it is connected to the internet and your network.

Step 2
Open your router’s administration page. In this example, the ASUS router page is accessed by typing “router.asus.com” in the address bar.

Step 3
On the Sign In page, enter the username and password that you set up when you configured the router.

Step 4
Click Sign In.

Step 5
On the administration page for the router, you can modify the name of the DNS address. Under the Advanced Settings menu, click WAN.

Step 6
Under the WAN DNS Setting section, look for Connect to DNS Server automatically and click on the option button for No.

You will be presented with options to type in server addresses. A DNS server is a computer that contains a database of public IP addresses and their associated host names. So when you type in a website address into your browser, the DNS server translates that into the IP address so the website that you are looking for will load. In this example, a new DNS service from Cloudflare is used since they advertise both speed and privacy for this free service that they offer.

On the DNS Server1 and DNS Server2 fields, type in the server addresses. In this example, “1.1.1.1” and “1.0.0.1” are entered.

NOTE: For Google DNS servers, type in “8.8.8.8” and “8.8.4.4” in the DNS Server1 and DNS Server2 fields, respectively.

Step 8
Click Apply.

Wait for the settings to be applied.

Step 9
Open another tab in your browser and access any website to verify that the changes work properly.

On the control panel of your router, click VPN under the Advanced Settings menu.

Click the VPN Client tab. This is the page where various servers can be configured according to what you want your router to connect to through the VPN service. On this page, you can also set up multiple IPVanish VPN servers. One VPN server may perform better than another so you can have multiple options and have the ability to choose which one to connect to.

Click Add profile.

On the pop-up window, click OpenVPN.

On the Description field, enter anything that you like. In this example, “IPVanish Chicago 1” is entered.

NOTE: It is recommended to connect to a VPN service that is closest to your location to give you better speed.

In the Username (option) and Password (option) fields, type in the username and passwords that you used to register on your IPVanish VPN account.

On another tab in your browser, go to https://www.ipvanish.com/software/configs/.

On the Index of/software/configs page, click on the ca.ipvanish.com.crt file and save it to your Downloads folder.

Locate the .ovpn file that contains the location name that is closest to your area. To search for the specific file, press CTRL + F then type in your desired area in the search box. Then press Enter.

In this example, “Chicago” is typed in the search box.

All servers in your chosen location will then be highlighted.

From this list, download the first server (which contains “01” in the file name). In this example, “ipvanish-US-Chicago-chi-a01.ovpn” is downloaded.

On another browser tab, open your IPVanish account and proceed to the control panel.

Click Server List in the menu. A list of servers with their current capacity levels will be displayed. This is used to check the list of servers in the Index of/software/configs page that will give you their corresponding high and low capacities. You can also check other servers by clicking on the page numbers at the bottom of the list.

 

The list is arranged alphabetically based on the location. You may click on the table headers (Country, Location, Address and Status) to re-arrange the list.

In this example, “chi-a01.ipvanish.com” has the highest capacity at 76%. This is the same server that was downloaded in Step 19.

I have noticed that sometimes the highest capacity servers are the fastest but sometimes this isn’t the case.  I suggest experimenting with the different servers until you find one that is fast.

You may also test other servers. In this example, “chi-a21.ipvanish.com” with a capacity of 15% is copied. Locate the file from the Index of/software/configs page and download it.

NOTE: Saving multiple profiles is possible because of the kind of router used in this example.

On the router’s administration page, click Choose File and select the downloaded file. In this example, “chi-a01.ipvanish.com” is downloaded.

Step 23
Click Upload.

Once the upload is finished, Complete, Lack of Certificate Authority will be displayed beside the Upload button.

Tick the box beside Import the CA file or edit the .ovpn file manually.

Step 25
The pop-up window will expand. Click Choose File and select the .crt file from your Downloads folder.

NOTE: The .crt file is the same for all servers. Therefore, you will need to only download it only once.

The filename ca.ipvanish.com.crt will appear beside the Choose File button.

Click Upload.

Once the upload is complete, the text Complete, Lack of Certificate Authority beside the upper Upload button will now become Complete.

Click OK.

The first server added will now be displayed on the VPN Server List table.

To add the second server, click Add profile.

A new pop-up window will appear. Repeat the steps above to add the second server.

Once the second server has been added, the two servers will now appear on the VPN Server List table.

Before activating the servers, open a browser in incognito mode so that a fresh copy of a website will be displayed. In this example, https://www.whatismyip.com is accessed.

Your public IP address will now be displayed.

NOTE: Due to privacy reasons, a portion of the IP address and the location in this example are redacted.

Go back to the router administration page and connect to the first server by clicking Activate. In this example, IPVanish Chicago 1 server is activated.

A blue check mark should appear on the server’s Connection Status cell.

Open https://www.whatismyip.com again in incognito mode. Notice that the public IP address has already changed and is now coming out of another area.

This verifies that the VPN is working properly on the router.

To test the internet speed, open https://www.troypoint.com/st in incognito mode. You will be redirected to the MegaPath Speed Test Plus page.

Click Start Test.

Wait for the download and upload speeds to be identified.

In this example, the download and upload speeds are indicated as 30.13 Mbps and 9.79 Mbps, respectively. The website also indicates the quality of the connection, which is “Excellent” in this example.

To test the second server, go back to the router administration page and click Deactivate on the first server row.

Step 34
Click Activate on the second server row.

Wait for the blue check mark to appear.

NOTE: You can add as many profiles as you like by clicking Add profile.

Go back to What Is My IP? site and refresh the page.

You should have a different IP address this time since the second server is being used.

Go back to MegaPath Speed Test Plus page and click Test Again.

Click Start Test and wait for the speed test results to appear.

If you want to have much better download speed, deactivate all servers.

You will now be using the PPTP VPN protocol, which is less secure but is perfect for streaming anonymously and masking your real IP address. If you are protecting trade secrets (or you’re an enemy of the State!), you will want to stick with OpenVPN.

To set up a PPTP VPN connection on your router, make sure that all servers are deactivated and then click Add profile. A new pop-up window will appear. You will then have three options: PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN.

NOTE: The L2TP option will only change your IP address and will not provide any encryption whatsoever. Hence, this is not recommended.

On the PPTP option, type in the Description. In this example, “IPVanish Chicago 1 PPTP” is entered.

Step 40
Go back to your IPVanish Control Panel page and copy the IP address of your selected server. In this example, “”chi-a01.ipvanish.com” is copied.

Paste the server name to the VPN Server field.

Step 42
Type in your username and password for IPVanish on the Username and Password fields.

On the PPTP Options dropdown menu, select either Auto, MPPE 40 or MPPE 128.

NOTE: MPPE 128 is a much stronger encryption compared to the other options.

Click OK.

On the VPN Server List, activate the new server that you added.

Once the blue check mark appears, go back to the MegaPath Speed Test Plus page and running a new test for the PPTP protocol.

In this example, the download and uploaded speeds are much faster. However, remember that this is not as secure as OpenVPN but should be better enough for streaming needs and keeping your internet connection anonymously encrypted.

Due to some websites and online services now blocking VPN and sometimes a decrease in download speed, some users run two routers within their network: one router for connection to the internet and another protected with a VPN, which you can find in the tutorial below.

How To Setup VPN On Router With DD-WRT Firmware

There are three steps that I go through within this tutorial.  The first is flashing the DD-WRT Firmware onto the router.  You can think of firmware as software that operates the router.  We will be installing (or “flashing”) an alternative firmware that will allow us to install the IPVanish VPN service.  Without DD-WRT firmware, it is not possible to set up a VPN on a router with the Netgear R7000.

The second step will be inputting the proper settings within DD-WRT that will activate the VPN service.

Finally, I will show you how to set up a dual router configuration where you can use one device as your VPN router and one as an open router with no protection.

Below, you will find a video tutorial that will show you the detailed steps on how to install a VPN on your router.  You may also go through the detailed general instructions below the video.

General Instructions

In this general guide, you will learn how to install a VPN service onto your router. With this, all your devices connecting to a VPN router will be protected and your real IP address will be hidden. Keep in mind that you must have a fairly powerful router to run a VPN service. In this example, the Netgear R700 router is used.

Before getting started, make sure that you have an IPVanish account. If you don’t have one, you may register by clicking here.

Step 1
Go to https://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm to download the dd-wrt files to “flash” and alternative firmware onto the router.

NOTE: Since the Netgear R700 router is used in this example, it is required to use both .chk and .bin files. In order to tell what you need to “flash” your device with, check the list of supported models of your router. In this example, the “Supported Models” file contains such list.

Step 2
Download the .chk file that corresponds to your router. You need to create a new folder where you should save this file.

Step 3
Download the .bin file that corresponds to your router.

Step 4
Disconnect to all your wireless networks.

Step 5
Prepare the following devices and cables before starting the setup:

  • primary router (or the current one that you are using)
  • secondary router (to be used as your VPN router)
  • cable modem (provided by your ISP)
  • blue and yellow network cables
  • USB network adapter (used to connect your network cable to your computer)

Step 6
Unplug the power cord of the primary router so that there will be no interference when setting up the new router. Make sure that the secondary router is turned ON.

Step 7
At the back of the primary router, unplug the internet cord (yellow network cable) that is connected to the cable modem.

Step 8
Plug the internet cord into the secondary router’s yellow internet port (WAN).

Step 9
Plug a blue network cable into a LAN port (preferably LAN port 1) into the secondary router.

Step 10
Plug the other end of the blue network cable into the network adapter connected to your computer.

Step 11
It is recommended to power cycle the cable modem before connecting to the router so it can input the proper settings that are necessary to run the internet.

Unplug the power cord of the cable modem before plugging it back in after a few seconds.

Step 12
Wait for the cable modem to reboot.

Step 13
After connecting your secondary router to your computer, you will be asked to put in a username and password. Be sure to check your router’s manual to know about the default username and password. In this example, the default username is “admin” while the default password is “password”.

NOTE: If a warning is displayed on this page that your internet connection is not working properly or your router cannot find your internet connection, repeat Steps 11 and 12 so the device can input the proper settings into the router and can identify it.

On the Admin Account Settings page of your router, assign a new password to secure your network.

NOTE: Be sure to write down your new password on a piece of paper so you can retrieve it easily in case you’re suddenly logged out.

Step 14
Depending on your router, you will be asked to download router apps.

Untick the boxes since the apps won’t be used. Click Next.

Step 15
You will be asked to proceed with the firmware installation update. Since you will be “flashing” your own firmware, there is no need to update it. Click No.

Step 16
You will then be asked to register your product. You may proceed with this step if you prefer by typing in the requested information and then clicking REGISTER. Otherwise, you may close the pop-up message if you opt not to register the device then click DO NOT CREATE ACCOUNT.

Step 17
The admin page will inform you that the installation process has been completed successfully.

Step 18
On the browser’s address bar, type in “192.168.1.1” then hit Enter on your keyboard.

Step 19
You will be asked to type in the username and password that you’ve recently set then click Log In.

Step 20
On the router’s administration page, click the ADVANCED tab.

Step 21
Click Administration > Router Update.

Step 22
Locate the downloaded files on your computer by clicking Browse.

Open the folder where you saved your Flash files. Select the .chk file first and click Open.

NOTE: The .chk file must be “Flashed” first before the .bin file.

Click Upload.

A pop-up message warning you that all existing internet connections will be terminated should you continue with the upload. Click OK.

Step 25
Another warning will be presented. You will be asked if you want to continue with the update since the firmware version you are trying to upload is older than the one you previously had. Click Yes.

The router will begin rebooting.

If you notice that your screen isn’t changing but your router has already completed rebooting, access “192.168.1.1” again.

The DD-WRT user interface will appear. Type in a new router username and password. Then re-enter the password to confirm.

NOTE: Make sure to write down the username and password on paper since you will be returning to this page later.

Click Changing Password.

The administration panel will appear. Click the Administration tab.

You will be asked to enter the username and password. Click Log In.

Step 31
Click the Firmware Upgrade tab.

Upgrade the version of the DD-WRT firmware to provide you with advanced settings of the VPN setup. Click Choose File then select the .bin file that you downloaded.

Then click Open.

Click Upgrade.

Once the firmware upgrade is successful, the unit will start to reboot. Wait until the process is completed.

You will be asked to check the following before connecting again:

  • If you have changed your router’s IP address, please note that you must release/renew your client(s) address(s) on the network.
  • If you are connected via WLAN, please join the network and then click Continue.

Click Continue.

If you will be redirected to 192.168.1.1/index.asp but is unreachable, it is most likely that your router is still in the process of rebooting.

Your screen will automatically refresh once the router has completely rebooted.

Before configuring the VPN installation, scroll down on the administration page and look for the Time Settings section. Select your appropriate time zone from the dropdown menu. In this example, “America/Chicago” is selected.

Click Save > Apply Settings.

Click the Wireless tab.

On the Basic Settings tab, find the Wireless Physical Interface section for each of the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Change the wireless network name (SSID) for each band. In this example, “VPN2” and “VPN5” for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, respectively.

NOTE: It is important to change the wireless network name (SSID) of each band so that you can choose between different bands in your network connections.

Click Save > Apply Settings.

Click the Wireless Security tab.

The Wireless Security w|0 section is intended for your 2.4 GHz band. Make sure that the security mode is set to WPA2 Personal.

On the WPA Shared Key field, type in your password then click Save.

The Wireless Security w|1 section, on the other hand, is intended for your 5 GHz band. On the Security Mode dropdown menu, select WPA2 Personal.

On the WPA Shared Key field, type in your password.

Click Save > Apply Settings.

Disconnect your network cable that is currently connected to the computer so that you can test if the wireless networks are working properly.

Once the Network Indicator icon changes into the Wireless icon, click it to reveal the available wireless networks.

The two wireless networks will now appear on the list. In this example, these are VPN2 and VPN5. To test the 2.4 GHz band, click VPN2 then untick the box beside Connect automatically.

Click Connect.

Enter the network security key.

On a new browser tab, open a website to verify that the connection is working properly.

Repeat the process for the 5 GHz band or in this example, VPN5.

NOTE: If for some reason you cannot connect successfully, restart your computer. Once the computer has restarted, click the Wireless icon then repeat the process of connecting to the wireless connection.

Access “192.168.1.1”.

Once on the Setup tab, you will be asked to enter your username and password then click Log In.

Begin the process of installing a VPN service by opening a new tab and going to IPVanish.

On the IPVanish Routers page, look for DD-WRT Routers PPTP Setup under Manual Setups. Click View Tutorial.

Before accessing the server address list, enter your IPVanish username and password then click Login.

After you have logged in, click on the Server List menu. The list of servers will be presented.

When selecting a server, consider the following:

  1. The location should be nearest to your area.
  2. The server should not have a very high capacity.

Copy the server address that you prefer. In this example, “chi-a26.ipvanish.com” is chosen.

Go back to your DD-WRT control panel. On the Basic Setup tab, the Connection Type dropdown menu should be changed to PPTP.

Additional fields will be shown. On the Gateway (PPTP Server) field, paste the server that you have copied.

On the Username and Password fields, type in your IPVanish username and password.

Set each of the following to Yes:

  • Use DHCP
  • MPPE Encryption

  • Packet Reordering
  • Dual-Access mode
  • Receive IPTV

For Connection Strategy, tick Keep Alive: Redial Period and set it to 20 seconds.

Click Save > Apply Settings.

Wait for the processing to be completed.

NOTE: If the wheel looks like it is locked up, wait for a few more minutes until the settings have been put into the router.

You will notice that your computer has disconnected from the wireless network. Select either the 2.4 GHz (VPN2) or 5 GHz (VPN5) to connect to.

Access “192.168.1.1” again.

On the DD-WRT control panel, click the Administration tab.

Scroll down to the bottom and click Reboot Router.

Your router will start rebooting, which can take up to five minutes.

Click the Wireless icon and select either VPN2 or VPN5 to connect to.

The DD-WRT control panel should reload right after. However, if it does not, access “192.168.1.1” again.

To check if IPVanish is working properly, open a new tab and access https://whatismyip.com.

The webpage will show that you are connected to a new IP address and the location.

If you want to shut off this VPN service, go back to the DD-WRT control panel. On the Basic Setup menu, set the Connection Type to Automatic Configuration – DHCP.

Click Save > Apply Settings.

Your router’s internet LED will stop blinking for a moment.

Click the Wireless icon and select either VPN2 or VPN5 to connect to.

Access “192.168.1.1” again.

Refresh the https://www.whatismyip.com page. The IP address and location should now have changed.

When you run a VPN service on a router, you will experience a slowdown in speed or a decrease in download speed. This is because of the processing power that requires to run the VPN service on the router and also due to your connection to a third-party service provider.

To test the speed, open a new tab and type in https://www.speedtest.net.

Click BEGIN TEST.

In this example, the download speed is at 24.63 Mpbs while the upload speed is at 14.26 Mbps.

Optional Steps for Dual Router Setup with VPN access

This general guideline is a continuation of the process above. This will help you set up a dual router configuration.

On the DD-WRT control panel, with the Connection Type set to PPTP, scroll down to the Network Setup section.

Under Router IP, change Local IP Address from “192.168.1.1” to “192.168.2.1”. Write this down on a piece of paper so that it will be easy to remember when accessing your secondary router (VPN router).

Click Save. You will notice that on the Network Setup section, under Network Address Server Settings (DHCP), the Start IP Address has changed to 192.168.2.100. This means that for any device that hooks up to your VPN router, it’s going to assign internal IP addresses beginning with this number.

Click Apply Settings and wait for the processing to be completed.

Connect back to your wireless connection.

Access the new IP address, “192.168.2.1” on your browser. The DD-WRT control panel should show up.

NOTE: If you have experienced any type of download issues with your secondary router (VPN router), go back to your list of servers in IPVanish. Find a new server from the list and paste it on the Gateway (PPTP Server) field. You may also power cycle your router.

Power OFF the secondary router (VPN router) by unplugging the power cord.

Unplug the yellow cord from the secondary router (VPN router) and connect it to the primary router’s WAN port.

Unplug the cable modem’s power cord.

Unplug the blue cable from the secondary router (VPN router).

Using a new yellow network cable (which came with the secondary router), plug one end into the secondary router’s WAN port and the other end into one of the available LAN ports of the primary router. In this example, LAN Port 4 is used.

With this setup, the primary router will be feeding the internet access from the LAN port into the WAN port of the secondary router (VPN router).

Plug the power cords back in for each router. Wait for each device to complete the power cycle.

Plug the power cord back into the modem.

NOTE: The modem should be the last to be turned ON but make sure it is connected to the WAN port of the primary router.

Connect to VPN5.

Refresh https://whatismyip.com and check if the IP address has changed.

Check your wireless access point by connecting to either TCNC or TCNC5, which are on your primary router. If you want an encrypted connect and my IP address changed, connect to either VPN2 or VPN5.

How To Setup Dual VPN Router

The following video will show you how to set up a dual router configuration within your home or business network.  This will allow you to have an open router and a VPN router on the same network.  This process was also outlined in the second video tutorial above.

 

General Instructions

In this tutorial, we’ll configure a dual router setup on your home or business network. With two routers coexisting in your home network, one device serves as the main open router with full download speeds and the other one is a VPN router that doesn’t download as fast due to the processing power required for the VPN.

All the devices that you want to protect with the VPN will be connected to the secondary router and then all others to the open primary router.

In this example, a Windows 10 PC is used to configure the secondary VPN router but any operating system will do just fine that come equipped with a browser.

NOTE: The administration page of your router may be different from the example below. However, the elements on your administration page will most likely contain the same.

Step 1
Disconnect from your primary router if you are still connected to it. If you have a network cable going from your primary router into the back of your computer, unplug the cable to disconnect. Click on the Network Indicator  icon on the System Tray to verify that you have disconnected from your router.

Step 2
Connect to your secondary router by plugging its cable into your computer’s network port.

You may also connect via wireless connection by going to the Wireless icon and clicking Connect.

NOTE: If you choose to connect wirelessly, make sure that your primary router is turned OFF since you will be typing in the same IP address to access both administration panels.

Step 3
On your browser, type in “192.168.1.1” to access your router’s administration page.

Step 4
Sign in with your username and password for the secondary router.

NOTE: You should have already set up the router in order to log in successfully.

Step 5
On the Advanced Settings menu, click Wireless.

Step 6
You will notice that your router has two different network names on the Network Name (SSID) field when you select each option on the Band dropdown menu. In this example, “TCNC” and “TCNC5” network names are assigned to 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, respectively.

It is recommended to change these network names if they are similar to your primary router that will also be residing on your network. In this example, “TCNC5” is modified to “TCNC5-VPN” to indicate that this is the 5 GHz band protected by the VPN.

For the primary router (which is the open router), it will retain the network name “TCNC5” to differentiate easily. The primary router will not have the VPN behind it and will allow access to full download speed.

Step 7
Once the network name has been modified, click Apply.

Step 8
When the new settings are applied, modify the network name for the 2.4 GHz band as well.

Then click Apply.

Step 9
Click LAN under the Advanced Settings menu.

Step 10
On the LAN IP tab, change the IP address of the secondary router so it won’t conflict with the primary router that has the same IP address. In this example, on the IP Address field, “192.168.1.1” is changed to “192.168.2.1”. In the future, when you want to get into the control panel of your secondary router, just type the new IP address into the web browser.

Step 11
Click Apply.

Step 12
A message that asks if you would like to update the IP Pool of address automatically will pop up. Click OK. This will assign new IP addresses that are to begin with with the first six digits of the IP address or “192.168” in this example.

Step 13
Once the changes are applied, type in the new IP address that you assigned to the secondary router.

Then log in with the same username and password on your router’s administration page.

Step 14
On the right-hand side, verify the new IP address by checking the summary of the router configuration.

Click LAN under the Advanced Settings menu.

Click the DHCP Server tab.

Under the Basic Config section, you will find the IP Pool Starting Address field containing the IP addresses assigned by the router to all the network connected devices. In this example, the IP address “192.168.2.2”. The primary router, on the other hand, will remain with the original IP address, “192.168.1.1”.

Step 17
Now that everything has been configured with the secondary router, you can start connecting it to the primary router.

In this example, the following devices are used:

  • cable modem
  • primary router (Netgear)
  • secondary router or VPN router (Asus)

Unplug the power cords connected behind each device.

Step 18
Plug the network cable coming from one of the LAN ports of the primary router to the secondary router’s wide area network (WAN) connection. This is where you would normally plug the cable modem internet feed into.

Step 19
Plug back in the power cord of the modem and let it boot.

Step 20
Once all the cable modem’s lights have come back on, plug the power back into the primary router.

Step 21
When the primary router has completely booted up, plug the bower back into the secondary router. Wait for it to boot up.

On your computer, click on the Wireless icon on the lower right-hand part of your screen. This will show all the wireless connections available.

Connect to one VPN access point. In this example, “TCNS-VPN” is selected for connection.

Open a website on your browser to make sure that it is loading properly.

Open the specific administration page for this specific router in a new tab. In this example, “192.168.2.1” is entered.

Once the router’s administration page is accessed, this indicates that you are successfully connected.

Step 25
Check the connection to your primary router by clicking the Wireless icon on the lower right-hand part of your screen and connecting to the specific connection. In this example, “TCNC5” is selected for connection.

Step 26
Reload the website that you previously opened to make sure that the connection is properly working.

Step 27
Log in to the administration page of the primary router by typing in the IP address on another browser tab. In this example, “192.168.1.1” is entered.

Step 28
You will be redirected to the primary router’s administration page when the connection is successful.

Step 29
Repeat the process to the other two remaining channels.

You can now switch between networks that you would like to use.

VPN Router Conclusion

Due to the fact that IPVanish VPN allows you to use one account on up to ten devices simultaneously, I recommend running the VPN app on your individual devices.

The above tutorial is for those who are more technically inclined and willing to spend the extra money for a VPN router.
