Russia has restricted calls on WhatsApp and Telegram citing ‘criminal activity concerns’ when in reality this is another method of censorship.
Russia’s communications watchdog Roskomnadzor announced Wednesday that it has restricted voice and video calling features on WhatsApp and Telegram within the country.
The federal agency claims these limitations target criminal activity conducted through foreign messaging platforms.
Russia’s Justification for Restrictions
Roskomnadzor told state news agency TASS that “calls on these foreign messaging platforms are partially restricted to counter criminal activity.”
The watchdog alleges that fraudulent calls have migrated to these apps after Russia implemented its Antifraud system in 2024.
According to officials, criminals use these platforms for extortion, sabotage, and terrorist recruitment. Anton Nemkin, a State Duma committee member, reported that WhatsApp fraud attacks against Russians increased 3.5 times since 2024.
The agency claims it repeatedly requested both companies implement safety measures but received no response from either platform.

The restrictions began August 1st and only affect calling features. Text messaging and other functions remain available to users across Russia. Reports suggest the disruptions vary in scope throughout the country.
