Plex Security Breach – Users Should Take Immediate Action

Popular streaming provider Plex has confirmed a security incident that may have exposed customer account details. While the company believes the impact is limited, it is asking all users to reset their passwords immediately to protect their accounts.

Plex Data Breach

Plex, best known for its all-inclusive media server and streaming application, is one of the most widely used platforms for watching live TV, Series, Movies, and more.

In a press release posted on their forum, the company reported that an unauthorized party accessed a database containing a subset of customer information.

Exposed data includes:

  • Email Addresses
  • Usernames
  • Securely hashed passwords
  • Authentication tokens

The good news is that Plex does not store credit card information on its servers, so no financial details were compromised. Passwords were also protected with hashing, making them unreadable to outsiders.

Still, Plex is urging all users to take action out of caution.

What Users Should Do

Whether you use Plex with a standard login or Single Sign-On (SSO), action is required:

If You Use a Password to Sign In

  • Reset your password immediately at plex.tv/reset
  • Check the option to “Sign out connected devices after password change”
  • Log back into all of your devices, including the Plex Media Server

If You Use SSO

  • Visit plex.tv/security
  • Select “Sign out of all devices”
  • Log back into your devices normally

Additional Security Tips

To reduce your risk of future issues, Plex recommends:

  • Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on your account
  • Being alert for phishing attempts — Plex will never ask for your password or payment details over email
  • Review your account settings regularly for any suspicious activity

Incidents like this highlight how even trusted platforms can be vulnerable to targeted attacks. While hashed passwords are considered safe, attackers may still attempt to crack weak ones. Resetting your login credentials and enabling 2FA are the best steps you can take to protect your data.

Final Thoughts

Plex acted quickly to contain this breach, but users must do their part to secure their accounts. If you haven’t already, reset your password and enable two-factor authentication today.
