Oftentimes, Stock Android Boxes do not automatically update to the latest firmware which forces users to manually install them. We can easily do this by downloading the update from the developer’s official website and installing on our device.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Updating generic Android TV devices sometimes requires a factory reset of the device. Make sure to back up your data including Movies, TV Shows, Photos, and more to a USB drive so you don’t lose your media.
Official Android TV/Google TV devices such as NVIDIA SHIELD, onn 4K Pro, and more typically do not factory reset when installing an update.

Step 1 –Â Check for Updates
1. Open Settings.

2. Choose Device Preferences.

3. Click About.

4. Scroll down to see the current version installed on your device.

5. Visit the official website of your Android Box device to find the most recent software version available.

If you find a newer version available than the one displayed on your device, you can manually update Android TV Box using our instructions below.
Step 2 – Download Update from Product Website
1. On the manufacturers website, find your device and download the firmware update.

2. Open Rufus Utility tool to format your USB Drive as Fat32. Select Non bootable for Boot selection. Uncheck Create extended label and icon files and click START.

3. Click OK.

4. Close Rufus and within the downloads folder, download the update.zip file.

5. Click Download anyway.

6. Save it to the root file of your USB drive and click Save.

Step 3 – Locate IP Address & Enable USB Debugging
1. Eject your USB Drive from Windows PC and plug it into your Android TV Box and Open Settings.

2. Click Network & Internet.

3. Find your Local IP Address and write this down (we will use it later).

4. Go back into Settings and click Device Preferences.

6. Click About.

7. Highlight Android TV OS Build and click it 7 times until you see “You are now a developer” message.

8. Go back to Device Preferences and open Developer Options.

9. Click the toggle for USB Debugging.

10. Click OK.

Step 4 – Connect Windows PC to Android TV Box & Install Update
1. Open Android TV Tools in folder and select Run as Administrator.

2. Type the IP Address of your Android TV Box you wrote down earlier. Click Enter.
NOTE: You may have to enter your IP Address multiple times until it accepts it. Keep inputting this until it is accepted.

3. On your Android TV Box, make sure to select Always Allow and click Allow.

4. On Android TV Tools, type 7 and click Enter.

5. Type x and click Enter.

6. Type 10 and click Enter.

7. Type 2 and click Enter.

8. Return to your Android TV Box where it will restart.

9. Select Apply update from SD card.

10. Choose update.zip.

11. Wait for system update to install.

12. Once finished, look at your System About page and you will see the latest version has been installed.

That’s it! Your update is complete. Return to the home screen to see your new Android TV Update. Enjoy!
