International Olympic Committee Targets Pirate Live TV Websites

International Olympic Committee Targets Pirate Live TV Websites

The 2024 Olympic Games, hosted by France, is captivating a global audience with its spectacular events.

However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is taking strong measures to protect its intellectual property rights by targeting unauthorized broadcasters.

Legal action has led to the blocking of pirate streaming sites and IPTV providers by French ISPs. Here’s a closer look at the measures taken to combat piracy during this major sporting event.

International Olympic Committee (IOC)

IOC’s Stance on Piracy

The IOC has always been strict about protecting its intellectual property rights. Given the brand’s importance and the revenue it generates, the committee leaves no stone unturned in its fight against piracy.

This vigilant approach filters down to other non-profit entities involved in the Olympic Games every four years.

Piracy concerns are not limited to the IOC. The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the Paris Organizing Committee for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games (COJOP2024) are equally vigilant.

These organizations have been monitoring piracy activities closely, with French news outlet L’Informe reporting that a list of problematic pirate sites and services was already being prepared in April.

Legal Action in Paris

In mid-July, the IOC, IPC, and COJOP2024 initiated legal proceedings against major French ISPs. This step is part of the site-blocking process but does not pose a threat to the ISPs themselves.

Many ISPs, including those in France, do not oppose site-blocking actions as they often benefit from broadcasting deals.

Court Orders and Blocking Measures

Last Wednesday, the Paris Judicial Court granted an ISP blocking order. The rightsholders informed the court that approximately 30 domains with a history of infringing behavior were accessible in France.

Based on this, the court ordered the ISPs to block these domains, preventing their customers from accessing unlicensed streams of Olympic events.

The Paris court issued a dynamic injunction, a flexible order allowing the blocking measures to be modified as needed.

If new domains emerge to bypass the blocks, the Olympic organizations can inform telecom regulator Arcom, which will add the new domains to the blocklist quickly.

List of Blocked Pirate Domains

The list of blocked domains, as reported by L’Informe, includes sites that have already begun redirecting or moving to new addresses.

Some of the targeted sites, such as Crichd.tv and Redditsoccerstream.online, have shown signs of abandonment, with no DNS records or significant drops in traffic.

The blocking measures will expire on September 8, coinciding with the end of the 2024 Olympic Games. Here is the list of domains targeted by the court order:

  • Crichd.tv
  • Crichdplayer.com
  • Kkzb8.net
  • Hplayer.ggapk.net
  • Worldcupfree.com
  • Redditsoccerstream.online
