Next-Gen Google TV Streamer: Upgrades, Leaks, and Features

Google is already hard at work on the next evolution of its living room ecosystem. Recent leaks surrounding the next-gen Google TV Streamer suggest a massive leap forward in both hardware and smart home integration. Moving past the simple “dongle” era, Googleโ€™s upcoming flagship streaming device aims to be a full-featured smart home hub, stepping up to challenge premium competitors like the Apple TV 4K and the Amazon Fire TV Cube.

Next-Gen Google TV Streamer

Here is a breakdown of the leaked features, hardware improvements, and what this means for your home entertainment setup.

1. Built-In Microphones for Hands-Free “Hey Google”

The most significant hardware upgrade is the addition of far-field microphones directly on the streamer itself. According to early reports, the familiar slanted, pill-shaped chassis will feature discreet cutouts for the mics, allowing the device to constantly listen for “Hey Google” voice commands. This effectively turns the Google TV Streamer into a smart speaker, allowing you to control playback, search for movies, or adjust smart home devices entirely hands-freeโ€”a feature highly requested by users transitioning from the Amazon Fire TV Cube.

Not a big deal here as the lower-priced Onn 4K Pro devices already have this!

2. Presence Sensing and Ambient Smarts

Google is pushing its streaming box further into the realm of smart displays with the addition of Presence Sensing. Using built-in sensors, the next-gen streamer will be able to detect when someone enters the room. When triggered, the TV can automatically wake up to display a Google Photos screensaver or an ambient dashboard featuring at-a-glance information like the time, local weather, and smart home controls. This builds on similar radar/sensing technology Google has experimented with in its Nest Hub displays and recent TCL smart TVs.

This is something I really like because when I enter the living room, the first thing I usually do is turn on the TV.

3. Faster Processing and Upgraded Storage

To justify its premium positioning in the streaming market, the new Google TV Streamer will pack a faster processor and expanded internal storage. While the current generation was bumped to 32GB, the upcoming model is expected to offer even more room for massive app libraries, caching, and local files. Enthusiasts are also hopeful that the upgraded chipset will deliver better audio pass-through support (like TrueHD and DTS-X Master Audio) to satisfy home theater audiophiles.

Let’s hope they future-proof the CPU and at least double the amount of storage.ย  Increased RAM Memory would be nice as well.

4. A Refined, Shortcut-Heavy Remote

While the overall shape of the remote will remain largely unchanged, Google is making usability tweaks. The new remote will reportedly add two additional programmable or dedicated shortcut buttons, joining the existing Netflix and YouTube keys. The incredibly popular Find My Remote button will remain conveniently located on the back of the main streaming unit, saving you from tearing apart the couch cushions.

5. A Compact Tweaked Design

Aesthetically, the device isn’t getting a radical overhaul, but it is going on a diet. The new Google TV Streamer will reportedly retain its sleek, slanted aesthetic but feature a narrower footprint, making it easier to tuck under low-profile soundbars or hide within tight entertainment centers.

Taking on the Apple TV 4K

When Google launched the current Streamer, it raised eyebrows with a $50 price bump, bringing the retail cost to roughly $150. This next-generation hardware seems specifically engineered to justify that premium price tag. With Apple developing a new Apple TV 4K that also features built-in room microphones and upgraded Apple Intelligence features, Google’s revamped Streamer ensures the Android ecosystem remains fiercely competitive in the high-end living room space.

There is currently no official release date for the next-gen Google TV Streamer.

It would be nice if we could get a true replacement for the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro and maybe Google can deliver that with this new streaming device?ย  I’m not going to hold my breath.
