Is NVIDIA Discontinuing Its Shield TV Devices?

One of the most beloved streaming boxes ever made looks like it just quietly reached the end of the road. The tube-shaped NVIDIA Shield TV, released back in 2019, now appears to be discontinued.

To be clear, NVIDIA has not officially announced anything. This is speculation based on retailer stock and other reports.

Is NVIDIA Discontinuing Its Shield TV Devices

Why the Shield TV May Be Discontinued

The tube Shield TV has been out of stock on Amazon for months, as you are unable to purchase from the official NVIDIA Store. Price tracking on Keepa shows Amazon last kept it in stock back in early April.  Best Buy and Newegg both list it as out of stock too, and B&H goes a step further and flat-out marks it discontinued.

The pricier Shield TV Pro is still on shelves for now, though it may just be sitting on deeper inventory. Another tell is the Shield remote going on sale at Amazon for the first time in over 2,000 days.

Does This Line Up With What NVIDIA Said?

Back in January, NVIDIA’s senior VP of hardware engineering Andrew Bell told Ars Technica that Shield TV production and updates were not ending “any time soon.” That was barely five months before the tube model vanished from every major retailer.

We dug around, and there is still no word from NVIDIA confirming a shutdown. If Bell’s comment holds, we are either looking at a temporary supply gap or NVIDIA trimming down to sell the Pro alone.

The Bigger Picture for NVIDIA

A discontinuation would not shock us. NVIDIA is a very different company than it was in 2019, and the massive demand for its AI chips has to be pulling focus away from a niche $150 streaming box.

The competition has not helped its case either. Cheaper Google TV devices like Walmart’s Onn 4K boxes and affordable Google TV smart TVs have flooded the market, making a premium streamer a harder sell.

Final Thoughts from Troy

It stings to see the Shield TV fade out, since nothing has matched its decade of support. We are holding out hope this stock crunch means a 4th-gen model is coming, but with NVIDIA riding the AI wave, we are not counting on it.
