UK Authorities Push Age Verification for VPN Users

UK authorities are now pushing age verification for VPNs after kids bypass adult site blocks.

England’s children’s commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza wants age verification systems for VPN providers after discovering children use these tools to bypass new adult site restrictions. Privacy experts are raising serious concerns about this proposal.

The UK’s Online Safety Act took effect in July, requiring adult sites to implement age verification systems. Within one day of these new rules, VPN usage in the UK spiked and adult website traffic actually increased.

De Souza said that children using VPNs freely represents “absolutely a loophole that needs closing.” Her office recommends requiring VPN providers to implement age verification systems to screen underage users.

Government Shows Support

The UK government appears to be taking this suggestion seriously. A spokesperson stated: “We will not allow corporate interests to come before child safety.”

Officials emphasized that VPNs remain legal tools for adults with no plans for a ban. However, they warned that platforms promoting VPN workarounds to children would face “tough enforcement and heavy fines.”

Privacy Experts Sound Alarm

Tech writers and privacy advocates strongly oppose the age verification proposal. VPN providers operate across multiple jurisdictions worldwide. Demanding global compliance with UK laws isn’t realistic for smaller providers who would refuse to comply.
