Popular streaming outlets Popcornflix, Crackle, and Redbox have officially shut down after their parent company (Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment) filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.
Crackle and Popcornflix were both well-known FAST (Free ad-supported streaming television) services that hosted thousands of free Movies and Shows users could access without paying for a subscription package.
The catch with these and other FAST apps was the built-in advertisements that must be consumed in order to view your preferred media. However, if you could stomach 30 seconds or more of “commercials” you could enjoy a massive library of free content that played with zero buffering.
Both Crackle and Popcornflix were available in just about every app store you could imagine including Amazon App Store/Google Play Store, meaning those with Amazon Fire TV Sticks, Android devices, and much more could easily install them for use.
The parent company for these outlets, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment, has filed for bankruptcy which ultimately led to the demise of these Streaming Apps.
Another key member under the CSFTS umbrella was Redbox which will also be forced to close operations.
Redbox was one of the original companies that shaped the future of the way we watch VOD content with their kiosks, which allowed simple video rentals. In 2022, Chicken Soup for the Soul purchased Redbox and built an ad-supported application for the service that never gained much popularity.
While you can still find these applications in their respective app store, the apps no longer function properly and the official website for Popcornflix is no longer available.
If you attempt to watch content on Crackle, you will first be presented with an advertisement but once the ad finishes, you are met with the following screen:

We also tried installing the Crackle Kodi Addon and found that it is no longer available within the official Kodi repository.
Many will remember Crackle as an early player in the ad-supported media industry and one of the first to bring free content with the use of advertisements.
