Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Says Biden Pushed to Censor Posts

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg addressed the House Judiciary Committee on Monday, claiming that the Biden administration “repeatedly pressured” his company to censor content related to COVID-19 during 2021.

In a letter to the committee chair, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Zuckerberg expressed regret for not being more vocal against the pressure at the time, calling it “wrong.”

He also pledged to avoid actions that might give the appearance of Meta taking sides in political matters, specifically mentioning that he would not repeat a donation made in 2020 to support local election infrastructure.

Increasing Scrutiny

The letter comes in response to growing criticism that platforms like Facebook and Instagram are biased against conservatives.

This sentiment has intensified with recent investigations, led by Rep. Jordan, into Meta’s interactions with the Biden administration during the pandemic.

Zuckerberg’s comments in the letter largely shift the blame onto Biden’s employees, while also making it clear that Meta has learned from past mistakes.

“We made some choices that, with the benefit of hindsight and new information, we wouldn’t make today,” Zuckerberg stated.

He emphasized that Meta should not compromise its content standards due to pressure from any administration, and pledged to resist similar pressure in the future.

The Role of Social Media in the Pandemic

During the pandemic, Facebook and other social media platforms faced significant challenges in managing “misinformation.”

They began by removing posts containing “misinformation” about COVID-19 and later expanded their efforts to include false claims about the vaccine.

These actions were met with resistance from government officials, who argued that platforms were not doing enough to combat misinformation.

In July 2021, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called on social platforms to adjust their algorithms to prevent the spread of misinformation, and President Joe Biden accused platforms like Facebook of “killing people” with false claims.

In response to these pressures, Zuckerberg noted that, ultimately, the decisions to remove content were Meta’s own. “Ultimately, it was our decision whether or not to take content down, and we own our decisions,” Zuckerberg wrote.

Revisiting the Hunter Biden Story

Zuckerberg also addressed Facebook’s handling of a 2020 New York Post story about Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son. At the time, Facebook temporarily reduced the story’s reach after receiving warnings from the FBI that it could be Russian disinformation.

Zuckerberg now acknowledges that this was a mistake, stating that the platform “shouldn’t have demoted the story” and that it has since changed its policy on demoting content while awaiting fact-checking.
