How To Add Subtitles To Kodi

How To Add Subtitles To KodiThis tutorial will show you how to add subtitles to Kodi by using OpenSubtitles.org.  There are times when we attempt to play movies or tv shows through Kodi and the sound quality isn’t that great.  Adding subtitles takes care of this problem and makes it enjoyable to watch your movie or television show.

Or, if you are like me and hard at hearing (my wife says that), the movies and tv shows are much more enjoyable with subtitles which are often also referred to as closed captioning.

There may also be times when someone may want to see subtitles within a different language.  Again, once you learn how to add subtitles to Kodi, you can take care of this problem as well.

Within this tutorial, we will be using a free Kodi addon called OpenSubtitles.org.  As of this writing, this is the most popular subtitle service and provides the best results when adding subtitles to Kodi.

One of the nice features of OpenSubtitles.org is the ability to see how other users have rated a certain subtitle prior to downloading it.  You can quickly determine which subtitle will be best for your Kodi device by simply looking at the list within the download list.

Below you will find steps on how to add subtitles to Kodi and I strongly suggest that you watch the video below for detailed instructions.

ATTENTION KODI USERS:  Internet Service Providers are starting to crack down on those who use Kodi to access free streams of movies, tv shows, etc.  It is strongly recommended that you use a VPN (virtual private network) whenever using Kodi.  This will provide you with an anonymous connection to the Internet so your streaming and downloading cannot be monitored by your ISP or the government.  Use the link below to learn how to setup a VPN on your streaming device.

What setting, configuration, or service does one use to see scenes in movies that already subtitled (translated) the foreign dialogue? In other words, the movie The Kingdom, with Jamie Foxx, has some scenes with Arabic soldiers speaking, and at the bottom, their discussion is translated in subtitles, just for when they were speaking. I don’t want to see American subtitles for an American movie, only for the scenes where the foreign language is spoken. The DVD has the translated subtitles in it, but the same movie on Kodi, does not. Thanks

Hey michelle i have the fix for u. 4get everything these people post on utube. What u need to do is go to addons and uninstall opensubtitles. Next go to install from repository. If u have good build for kodi go to kodisreal repository go to subtitles. Not addons. Now u should have opensubtitles and one that says opensubtitleswithout login in. Install that one. Then everything will work. Here is my email if u need more help. 1972louie@gmail.com

I have done all of that.. My biggest problem is how I get movies that have a few scenes with a different language. I’m English so sitting there having no clue what they are saying. I’ve tried everything downloading English, Spanish, but it always just shows up the same language they are speaking which doesn’t help me. Any ideas?

Were you ever able to get around the credit card issue? I really don’t want to do that either. Or did you happen to find a ddifferent add on that doesn’t require that?

    • ribbitz March 3, 2017 at 9:56 pm - Reply

You’re talking about the “Ennymedia” paywall. Don’t do this. It isn’t free. After 5 days they charge your card $39.95 per month. Yup, 39.95 per month, for subtitles. If you’ve done it, go back, log in, click support, and cancel account.

How do you add subtitles to scenes in movies that are supposed to have them? I don’t want subtitles for the whole movie, just for the subtitled scenes.

This add subtitles for hearing impaired or deaf, No subtitles if you like no problem.

  28. Robert June 9, 2016 at 8:48 pm - Reply

Does downloading the subtitles take up some of my fire tv memory, or is it cached and the memory released after closing the movie, tv show or kodi? Will doing this many times eventually use up all of my fire TV memory or buffer space?

    • Troy June 9, 2016 at 8:50 pm - Reply

Hello Robert, don’t worry about that. These subtitle files are very, very small.

  29. Art June 9, 2016 at 8:46 pm - Reply

Worked for me my second movie but on the first one the words weren’t even close to what they were saying. I’ll keep working with it.

    • Troy June 9, 2016 at 8:49 pm - Reply

Hello Art. When you come across movies where the words aren’t correct, go back and click the subtitle icon on the player menu and download a different subtitle file. Sometimes you may need to do this a couple of times until you get a good one. Seems like the ratings within OpenSubtitles.org helps with that.

My wife and I have used subtitles with a few episodes of Breaking Bad and a few episodes of Mozart In The Jungle, as our limited Spanish was insufficient to keep up with the fast-paced dialogue. Took me a bit to figure out how to enable it, but Google and I got the job done. That said, it was curious that some of the subtitle entries on the list worked better than others and I was not quite sure why. So I look forward to reading your latest post on this for additional pointers. Thanks!

Thanks for your post, Doug! Glad to hear that you got the subtitles running within Kodi.
