Over 2 Million Android TV Devices Infected by ‘Kimwolf’ Botnet

A dangerous botnet called Kimwolf has infected more than 2 million Android-powered TV boxes and streaming devices worldwide, according to recent findings from cybersecurity researchers.

Kimwolf Botnet Infects Millions of Android TV Devices

This malware turns your streaming device into a ‘zombie’ that hackers control remotely. They use these infected gadgets to launch massive attacks against websites, sell your internet bandwidth to strangers, and install hidden apps without your knowledge.

How Android Devices Get Infected

The scariest part of this threat is how these devices become compromised. Researchers discovered that many cheap Android TV boxes arrive pre-infected right out of the box.

When you plug in one of these compromised devices and connect to the internet, hackers can access your home network within minutes. The malware targets a feature called Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which is left exposed on many budget streaming boxes.

Synthient found that 67% of Android devices in residential proxy networks had no authentication protection at all. Their research identified approximately 6 million vulnerable IP addresses.

Scale of the Attack

The combined power of these infected devices has produced record-breaking attacks. Cloudflare reported one assault reaching 29.7 Terabits per second, making it one of the largest DDoS attacks ever recorded.

Researchers tracked roughly 12 million unique IP addresses connected to this botnet each week. Most infected devices are located in Vietnam, Brazil, India, and Saudi Arabia, though the network spans 222 countries.

Common device names appearing in the infected pool include generic labels like “TV BOX,” “HiDPTAndroid,” “SMART_TV,” and “X96Q.”

How Hackers Make Money

The criminals behind Kimwolf profit in several ways. They rent out your internet connection for as little as $0.20 per gigabyte. A hidden tool called Byteconnect SDK secretly installs apps on infected devices, earning referral fees for each installation.

They also operate a DDoS-for-hire service, renting their entire 2-million-device army to anyone willing to pay for website attacks.

How to Protect Yourself

Users can check if their connection has been compromised by visiting synthient.com/check. If your device tests positive, we recommend wiping or destroying the infected hardware.

The safest approach is avoiding cheap, no-name Android TV boxes entirely. Stick with Google Play Protect certified devices from reputable manufacturers like the NVIDIA Shield, Onn 4K boxes, MECOOL,  Google TV Streamer, or BuzzTV devices.

Final Thoughts

This discovery shows why buying budget streaming hardware from unknown sellers carries real risk. These devices may cost less upfront, but the security problems they create affect your entire home network.

When shopping for streaming hardware, investing in certified products from trusted brands is worth the extra cost.
